Bizarre Problem with GRUB

I haven't used CloneZilla, but another tool to consider using is
ntfsclone. I have used it to backup/restore partitions which are
formatted using NTFS. This does not attempt to get information about the
entire disk- just individual partitions.

Here is a command sequence which saves a partition in "special format"
# ntfsclone -s -o ~/sda1.sf.img /dev/sda1

Or use a compression stage to save space:
# ntfsclone -s -o - /dev/sda1 | gzip >~/sda1.sf.img.gz

Here is a command sequence which restores a "special format" image:

# ntfsclone -r -O /dev/sda1 ~/sda1.sf.img

Similarly, for an image which uses compression:

# cat ~/sda1.sf.img.gz | gzip -cd | ntfsclone -r -O /dev/sda1 -

Then this fixup may be required:

# ntfsresize /dev/sda1

The last command is necessary if the "volume size" of the saved image
is smaller than the target partition. It enlarges to final volume to
match the underlying partition size.
I wouldn't be surprised if CloneZilla is part of the problem you are
having, but I could be wrong. IMO, working with individual partition
images is the way to go. Once you have restored each partition image
separately, then the last step is to fixup the grub loader. This
approach will automatically fixup various mismatches, which I alluded
to in my initial post. IMO, the hard-disk-upgrade mini howto is a good
starting point to begin learning about disk images.

Just for comparison, here are the steps I would follow to do something
similar..

Sequence:
0. Connect target USB device.
1. Use fdisk to setup the target partition layout. BartPE on partition 1,
I think.

2. Preformat linux partitions with the file system of your choice. IIRC,
avoid using ReiserFS. Primarily, I use XFS. It has some neat resize
features, etc.

3. Restore images.
3.a. For NTFS partitions, use ntfsclone. Example shown above.
3.b. For Linux partitions, use tar (tgz archives). Perhaps, using this
sequence:

cat sda2.tgz | gzip -cd | (cd /mnt/sda2 && tar -xvf - --numeric-owner)

4. Fix grub loader.

# grub --no-floppy
grub> geometry (hd1)
grub> root (hd1,1)
grub> setup (hd1)
grub> quit

Note: use geometry (or some other method) to verify how grub has "counted"
your usb disk. "Hit" the proper target.

5. Shutdown and test reboot with usb.

Disclaimers:
1. I hope I didn't make any blatant mistakes. Check my commands carefully
before using them.
2. There are also many assumptions built in to this explanation. Be sure
of any commands you use are appropriate for your system.
3. Understand what you are doing and the underlying principles (hardware,
software, nomenclature, etc.)
4.Practice using the tools which you have selected until you are
comfortable using them.

Fedora Core 6 Memory Stick problem

Well, I upgraded to f8 as Marc Schwartz suggested and that did fix the

critical than the Memory Stick, so I had to revert back to fc6.

But I recently noticed with fc6 that if I suspend and then resume then both
/dev/sda and /dev/sda1 are automatically created and it recognized the
Memory Stick device on /dev/sda1 and all works fine.

So that is a huge clue: What does the suspend/resume do that the boot does
not do? If I can determine this then I can stick a quick hack into
/etc/rc.d/rc.local (until f9 or so) to mimic at boot time what is done on
suspend/resume. If anyone has any clues for me as what suspend/resume does
in terms of rescanning for such devices it would be greatly appreciated.

Tracking Tasks that can be Completed Out of Order

You might remove the links and use the task priority setting in conjunction
with resource leveling to set the order they will likely be worked on.
Links should not be used to describe the order you *want* to work on tasks,
they should describe the order you MUST work on the tasks because of
something inherent in the process itself. When building a structure we link
"erect walls" as a predecessor to "install roof" not because we usually do
it that way but rather because the law of gravity says we cannot build the
roof in midair and later stuff the walls in underneath it <grin>. Linking
A->B says that A produces as its output something that is needed as an input
for B and as a result B cannot start until A is done. If that's not true,
remove the link and use something else to model the sequencing.

Loading a Project from Excel

Posted: 17 Nov 2005 12:37 PM PST

Thanks Jack. I checked the doentation and it seems relatively
straightforward. One question I can't find: Can we load multiple projects in
one pass (one project per line)? or is it just open an excel file that has
one line of data, create the project, close that projects, then open the next
line, create the project, close the project, etc.). With a thousand projects
to create, that would be a time consuming job.

Thanks.

Filtering for only cross-project links

Hi Andrew,

Glad to know the formula worked and thanks for the feedback.

Without seeing your project file, it is only a guess, but I assume the
reason why you only need the first part of the formula in a master project
is that if a task is an external successor to one task, it is also an
external predecessor to another task in the project. Tasks actually entered
into the master are internal -- all others (from the subproject files) are
external.

Hope this helps.

Set a start AND end date for a project?

Posted: 16 Nov 2005 08:39 PM PST

A project mathematically simply cannot have a fixed beginning date AND a
fixed ending date. It may, indeed usually DOES, have a date by which it
needs to end but that's not the same thing as the end date. That's the
TARGET for the end date. The project end date itself is that date on which
the last bit of work is done and the project deliverable is completed. That
event may occur before, on, or after the target end date but it occurs
whenever it occurs - Mother Nature and the laws of physics don't care
whether you're on time or late, only the bossand the client cares about that
<grin>. Project's job is to look at the physical work to be done and the
way you deploy your assets to do it and predict when the physical end is
likely to occur so you can create a workable plan that meets the boss's
objectives. When you schedule from the start date forward, you input the
date you will start work and the structure of the work itself, including
your best estimate of the duration of each component task. Project then
computes when the project would end IF you structured the work and assigned
the resources the way you have proposed. If it meets or is better than your
required target, great. If it's not, you don't just designate the date you
want, you must actually revise the organization of the work and/or the
assignment of the resources in order to materially change the computed
schedule so that it finishes where it should.

All of your 1200 tasks should lead up to a finish milestone. Every task in
the project should be linked to a successor except for that one milestone -
if there's no actual activity that is the successor to a given task, the
finish milestone is its successor. You set a deadline on the finish that is
the client's required date. After building your task list, linking them,
and assigning resources to them, you compare the computed scheduled finish
with the deadline for the finish and if necessary iteratively revise the
plan until it's computed to finish on or before the deadline.

I started the old server back up. Started the Information Store and System

Looking at the Public Folders Instances on the old server, I can see 3 of
the Public Folders. What is the difference between the Public Folder
instances and the Public Folder? Looking at the tion status on the old
server, it shows they have been Both Modified. I thought that I had moved
them. Could this have something to do with users having their Outlook start
slow? How do I get rid of the old server?

Questions about migrating from Ex2003 to Ex2007 and coexistance.

Posted: 13 Jan 2008 01:40 PM PST

Now I have a couple of related questions.

I know for Exchange 2007 user mailbox settings you have to use the Exchange
07 tools, you don't use the A/D users and computers snap in, but during the
"coexistence" phase, I assume I still use the A/D snap in for the Exchange
2003 users, correct? If we need to create a new user, or mailbox enable
someone on the Exchange 2003 system, do we just use the regular tools?

Also, regarding OWA. I realize that the Exchange 2007 CAS provides for the
backward compatibility 2003 "/exchange" OWA site, but due to our licensing
issues I don't want to run the 2003 users through the 2007 web system. Is
there any problem with leaving our 2003 Outlook Web server active and as we
migrate users at that time have them go to the 2007 CAS server (and use the
"/OWA")? What would happen if a user with a mailbox on the 2007 server
would try to access the 2003 OWA server?

Exchange 2007 Tranisition - Public Folder replication issues

Hi Neil,

Thanks for your reply.
Can you let me know how this is done - I have spent some time looking at

public folder instances...?
There are 2 options in EMS for PF instances (on E2k server):
1. To Select PF
2. to 'change server' i.e. move to the public folder on a different server.

I suspect neither of these options is what is required.
Many thanks...

Exchange Distribution List Limitation - Exchange 2007

Posted: 10 Jan 2008 08:57 AM PST

Mmm (deep thought) ... I appreciate the feedback Mark, but can you help me
understand this some more and perhaps suggest an alternative? My users
have a shared mailbox and in that mailbox they have populated Contacts with
many contacts plus they've also created distribution lists within Contacts
(see attached screen-shot). They used the full OL2003 client to create the
contacts not OWA. The problem occurs when they use Contacts to do their
mailings. The exact process as follows:

- Open Contacts from the shared mailbox
- View by Catagory
- Select the Category
- Expand the Category
- Click Action in Menu Bar and select New Message to Contacts which puts
them in the To: field in the new message
- Cut 'n' Paste the Contacts from the To: field into the Bcc: field
- Type the message as usual and click Send

After what seems like an Outlook hang, the result is the error message
described in my oringla posting ... the web article states "Exchange Server
2003 has a limit on the number of contacts that can be added to a
distribution list." which made me think it was an Exchange issue. Either
way, they'd like to
continue using this method, so any information on how to fix or work-around
this problem would be appreciated. Thanks.

PJ.

Problem Creating Mailboxes on Exchange 2003

Hi David,

i read the article of the URL you sent me. I enabled RUS logging and tired
to check for errors. But i had only informational log events, and no critical
erros on RUS.

I was waitig more than 24 hours for RUS to stamp a user object. But it
didn't happen.
I was also checking if there are some inconsistencies between exchange and
domaincontrollers (eg. time difference to big). But nothing at all was
present.

After i triggered the RUS manually to do an update, then unstamped objects
were
stamped again. I also tested if the RUS stamps new objects wich also works
again.

I'm really a little bit confused why the RUS stops working immediately, but
some collegaues told me, that they had this problem also, and they resolved
it with reboots of DC and Exchange. But in my case this didn't help.

I'll read a little bit more about RUS. Probably i find out why it stops
working.

Exchange 2007 unable to see all DC/GCs in site

Thanks for that, fixed it and it was so obvious I am embarrased. The SBS was
the Time Server being the PDC Emulator and the Time Service was not running
so I set the startup to automatic started the service and restarted w32time
on the Exchange 2007 box and now the issue does not exist.

I thought it was something I had missed in Exchange 2007 but like you said
it was AD and DCDIAG showed me this.

Thanks for giving me your suggestions.

So I ran this on a client machine - bang, worked great. So I am guessing
that if the exchange server and the client machine uses the chimney command
then that causes the problem

I like to think that I am good in Word, and I really understand how to use tables/format them etc.  HOWEVER,  I seem to be completely unable to lock a table in one place and get the text to flow round it.  HELP!  I am in the last week before hand in!!

How do I put everything on one page into one frame?

Posted: 29 Nov 2014 11:39 AM PST

<Moved from Windows 7 / Programs>

I have this form that I've created with both Word 2007 and Excel 2007. I would like to put the whole page into one frame, including an actual frame. Is it possible to do this? What it boils down to is I need to wrap an box around the whole page. I drew the square and tried to put it around my work but it wouldn't go to back. What am I missing? What do I need to do?  Thanks!!

Word 2010 ~ Formatting Zip+4 Code in a MERGE FIELD

Posted: 29 Nov 2014 10:42 AM PST

Hello:

I need help with the following code so the the last 4 #'s of the zip code do not show. Here's the code to use for zip+4 for those who want the zip=4 format. How would I treak this code so that the zip code is 5 digits, i.e. 90079:

{ IF { =ABS ( { MERGEFIELD PostalCode \# "####'-'#####" } ) } <> { MERGEFIELD PostalCode { MERGEFIELD PostalCode \# "#####'-'####" } { MERGEFIELD PostalCode } }

Word/excel converter

Posted: 29 Nov 2014 10:09 AM PST

Dear All,

I am using the default Windows converters [wordconv.exe, excelcnv.exe, ppcnv.exe] for converting old doc, xls, ppt format files to docx, xlsx, pptx [Xml formats]. This conversion tools works fine in my windows 7 PC. But when I execute the same command in a windows 2008 Server, the conversion is not happening. I'm not even getting any error messages or error logs.

This is the command I'm using for doc--> docx conversion:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\wordconv.exe" -oice -nme "input.doc" "output.docx"

This is the command I'm using for xls--> xlsx conversion:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\wordconv.exe" -oice "input.xls" "output.xlsx"

Both are running on 64bit Operating System only. Someone help. Any suggestion would be helpful. Is there any pre-requisite software needed which will be available in windows 7 by default but not in 2008 servers?

Please do let me know if you need more information.

Thanks,

Paul

Draft View has gone wonky

Posted: 29 Nov 2014 09:53 AM PST

OK... so I am a freelance publishing subeditor and to work on documents I use Office 365 with Dragon Naturally Speaking 12. So far I have found this to be a very good combination.

However... this morning I was dictating text into my computer using Word when Dragon misheard something I was dictating, believing it to be the command "Draft View".

I always work in draft view anyway, so I was already in draft view, so the command should have had no effect. However, what actually happened was that the various text styles used in the documents I edit no longer appear in Draft view. Instead, all of the text is in a font which looks like Courier. Doubleand triple carriage returns have all been replaced with single carriage returns; in short, the formatting on the document is FUBAR.

But when I view the documents in print view, outline view, read mode etc, they look fine. And when I open the documents in my laptop, which runs Word 2007, everything is fine in draft view.

I have 'repaired' Office 365 using the control panel and I have uninstalled the programme and then re-installed it and yet the problem persists.

Can anyone tell me: WTF has caused this and how can I remedy it?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

PLEASE NOTE: I do not want to change the interface language; it must stay English. I only need an Afrikaans spell checker.

It seems that most links on sites dealing with this query lead to Office 2013 sites.

Problems when trying to open a Word document

Hello,

Has anyone out there encountered the following problem: I cannot open an existing Word document by simply double-clicking on the icon of the document on e.g. the desktop or in the Explorer tree structure. Instead I have to first open the program Word and then open the document from the menu bar on top within Word.

Hoping for help

List format question

Posted: 29 Nov 2014 12:38 AM PST

Here is my question:

In one of cases I need to type, the draft looks like:

1.    Answer the following questions and

       you need to ...

       (a)   What is the name of ...

       (b)   What is the value of ...

2.    (a)   Compare X and Y ...

       (b)   State your ...

I have no problem for the first part for 1, and 1-(a), 1-(b) etc. But I cannot make the second part since I cannot find a way to have 2 and 2-(a) appear on the same line. Is there is a quick solution.

Thank you!

Mail merge Word Excel, Could not find installable ISAM

Posted: 28 Nov 2014 10:28 PM PST

Hi there,

I am trying to do a Mail Merge using a Word document and an Excel database. When I try to open the Excel file I get the error message 'Could not find installable ISAM'.

There ar some threads about this error message. Some about a connection string, some about file locations. Since I don't use a connection string, that seems not to be the answer but I do have some worries about the file locations or the registry entry.

On my system the Msexcl40.dll is located in C:\Windows\SysWOW64 and in C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-m..components-jetexcel_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.16384_none_b2ae6f155dd6aa86.

The register key to JET is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Jet\4.0\Engines\Excel

So everything seems to be there, but it does not work.

Using Word/Excel from Office 2013 Professional Plus 2013 32-bit

Running Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64-bit.

Any ideas??

VBA to detect rotation of inline shape

Posted: 28 Nov 2014 06:09 PM PST

It's only been recently (since 2007?) that Word has allowed us rotate inline shapes. I'm looking for a way for a macro to detect whether such a shape has been rotated; but apparently there's no .Rotation property for the InlineShape object. Any ideas for a way around that (in Word 2010)?

If it helps, the rotation is always either 0 or 90 degrees, so a Boolean function would suffice (that is, there's no need to detect the amount). Unfortunately the shapes are not all of the same aspect ratio or this would obviously be simple.

Thanks for any clues.

Mark

How to find a file you saved over.

Posted: 28 Nov 2014 04:33 PM PST

I finished typing a document in Microsoft word 2013. I then decided to transfer it to my usb drive. I thought that I was moving the new version (from my computer)) to save over the the old version (on the flash drive) but I did the opposite. So then I had an old file (from my usb) on my computer. I tried to reverse it by right clicking the undo copy button, but it just deleted the file. Now I cant find the file that I accidentally saved over either. I have windows 8 by the way.

I have to be honest with you, up until I got my new computer this year I was
using Outlook Express so I never had to worry about backing up files. I
don't do a lot of customizing so I was content to install and run with
Office out of the box. I'm sure others can help you with what you'd need to
back up to maintain your email stuff. :-)

XP-Professional Office install over Vista Office trial version

Posted: 30 Dec 2007 04:09 PM PST

I'd wait. It's one thing if you *need* Office 2007 for some reason but if
you don't, hang in there for a while. You need to be a bit conservative with
software upgrades sometimes. My employer isn't going to upgrade but but I've
volunteered to be a guinea pig if they want to roll it out slowly. They said
it could be a while so I'll continue "practicing" at home so that I can be
ready to hit the ground running when they finally decide to make the change.

Office Professional 2007 registration failure

Posted: 27 Dec 2007 10:18 PM PST

Actually, the way they are using the software - three people, they would be
violating the EULA if it was installed on the second machine as the second
install is "to be used by the primary person on both devices" (my quotes.)
They would need to purchase 2 more licenses to be "legal."

From MS EULA for Office 2007 Pro -

2.INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS. Before you use the software under a license,
you must assign that license to one device. That device is the "licensed
device." A hardware partition or blade is considered to be a separate
device.

a.Licensed Device. You may install and use one copy of the software on the
licensed device.
b.Portable Device. You may install another copy on a portable device for use
by the single primary user of the licensed device.

Can't get rid of a program

Posted: 25 Dec 2007 10:43 PM PST

You have a digital locker if you have ever d/l'd anything from Microsoft's
website(s). You can go there and re-d/l whatever software you purchased or
d/l'd from MS. After you SAVE a copy of the software, you can create an image
file of the install package and burn it, effectively giving you a CD to use
for a repair or whatever else you may need to do.
