Offhand it sounds like a partition at least that should be the simplest and

Remove the partition. Format the disk with a live CD linux.

OR leave it and mount it separately. OR 7G might be enough to install linux and
use the rest of the disk for user files. OR install different versions of linux
on each partition and see which you like best.

I did the second OR when a small boot disk failed and I had to install the OS
on the data disk without losing the data. Of course I created the partition first.

How to install Fedora Core 5 on laptop from HD?

Crossposting appropriate. Left in.

Just one comment really; Consider if you really need, or want, to run
Fedora core. I used it until six, when I decided that it was getting
more "unpolished" and hard to use with each subsequent version, rather
than getting better.

I resisted comments from others here that Fedora really is a distro
for experimentation and tweaking rather than ease of use and out
of the box functionality. I resisted it because I had devoted alot
of time trying to work the endless useage problems out. There isn't
anything inherently wrong with it. It just isn't the distro for
the guy who wants to install and use with a minimum of fuss. IMHO.
I started looking for a more friendly and complete-from-the-install
distro after I just about ripped my hair out with FC6. I've used quite
a few distro's over the years, but I haven't used any that can compare
to Ubuntu in completeness, simplicity of install, and ease of use.
It comes on a live disk that lets you install it if you like it. The
install asks a few brief questions, then does all the work for you.
I haven't ever used a better installer, and anaconda is an abortion
in comparison. It's going to take you by suprise. Root is handled
differently in ubuntu, and it takes some getting used to. But it's
fast, the add-remove is a breeze and actually works, unlike FC
add/remove and update which is prone to unreliability. Take a serious
look at moving on from FC. I did, and ubuntu is a joy to use.

My wife still runs fedora on her machine, and it keeps farting on
various things at verious times for no apparent reason. I haven't
*ever* had ubuntu do that on my machine. Too bad that she dosen't want
to change over. Oh well.

Best regards,

Mateus

groups vs users

OK - I should have done a bit more explaining. As stated, neither the
man or info pages ('man chmod' verses 'info chmod') give the greatest
explanation of what the flags do. Using the octal value rather than
the alphabetical values is just an experience thing. I'm used to working
with the numbers, and not as comfortable with the letters. Each method
has it's uses, strong and weak points.

You still need to be a member of the group (to have write access), but
you don't need to run the 'newgrp' command to make a specific group your
'primary' group ID. Yes - very handy.

The Xnnn numeric sequence has eight possible values (like the other
digits), but there are some differences in the effect on a directory
verses on a file. Also, how an 'ls -l' command _displays_ the resulting
mess is less obvious.

For directories, only 1xxx and 2xxx have meaning (4xxx does nothing). If
you look at /tmp or /var/tmp, you'll see that these directories are
readable/writable by everyone, and that _can_ be bad news when you have
"playful" users (like students in a class sharing a directory). So we
change permissions on that directory from '777' (the leading zero is
implied but not shown) which would be

drwxrwxrwx 1 root root 2048 Jan 1 1970 /tmp

to '1777' which changes the "others" permission to 't' (o=t is the
letter version of the '1xxx' bit) and this gives

drwxrwxrwt 1 root root 2048 Jan 1 1970 /tmp

The effect of this change is that only the Owner of a file (and root)
can delete it. Without this, anyone who can _write_ to the directory can
also delete files in this directory, leading to much student hilarity.
You _may_ find someone setting a group directory to '1770' and setting
the group ownership to something like 'students' to prevent "outsiders"
from accessing the directory. This would show as

drwxrwx--T 1 root students 2048 Jan 1 1970 /tmp/students

Note the 'T' rather than a 't' - meaning that the sticky bit is set (1xxx)
but the 'others execute' permission is NOT set.

The '2xxx' permission on a directory (g=s) has been described upthread.
The not-very-useful permissions of 2740 (SGID, but without the execute
bit needed to _list_ the directory contents) would show up as a 'S'
rather than 's' in the ls output. (drwxr-S---).

Note that these actions are different for _files_ as compared to
directories. For files, the 2xxx and 4xxx permission causes
executable _binary_ files (does not apply to scripts) to be run with
the GID or UID of the file owner, rather than the person who actually
invoked the binary. The 1xxx bit has no effect any more, but used to
mean that if the file were swapped OUT of memory, it didn't have to
be saved to swap space, but would be reloaded from permanent disk
space when the file were swapped back IN. This is a relic of the past
when both RAM and disk space were expensive and could profitably be
used for other purposes.

Installing Linux on Intel DG965SS Motherboard

Posted: 07 Feb 2007 01:35 AM PST

I've assembled this one machine with:

Motherboard: Intel DG965SS
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
Memory: DDR2-533 2 GB
HD: Barracuda 7200.10 SATA/250.0 GB/7200 rpm

For the main purpose of scientific development (high performance
computing).
So, I'm trying to find out what's the best Linux distro to work with
this hardware, the distro (not just the right kernel, but the best
hardware support, given this mobo is fully onboard) which has 100%
compatibility between hardware and OS.
This hard disk already has Windows XP Professional installed on it,
and I don't need to have both (Linux and Windows) running at the same
time, but if it is the only way to work, ok.
Can you give me few directions??? Tips??? Answers???

Thanks in advance,

Samuel. (anyone whom may help and answer directly, my e-mail address

I did try the articles but still failed... I will tell more details about my

emails but when want to view public folders it shows "HTTP/1.0 503 Service
Unavailable"... If I access the OWA from externally and I can see all the
emails but click public folders it shows HTTP/1.1 503 Service Unavailable...

So when I go to ESM... I can't expand the public folders and set the

The event was the deletion of the Exchange tracking log "The message

Memory was at 3.04G. There is no /3Gig switch in the boot.ini. This is all I

I now have a problem with the orientation of the address on an envelope.  When I look at printing options, it tells me that the envelope should be positioned face up with the flap to the left, which I have done for years. But, suddenly the address prints180 degrees from what is expected. The box "clockwise rotation" is not checked. The box "Rotate 180 degrees" in the printer driver is not checked either. This changed occurred shortly after an MS update. How can I correct this?

unable to save new documents in either Excel MsWord Outlook (Office 2007) Windows 7

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 11:51 AM PDT

I cannot save any new document in either Excel or MsWord - when I select "save" nothing happens (I  should get the "list of Folders").

I have been having this problem for some time now - I have been getting around it, by copying an existing file to another location, renaming it,  and then clearing it out and starting again - such a time consuming process, so would really like some help in solving this.

TODAY my problem got worse, I needed to upload some documents on the HMRC site and when I clicked on their "Browse" box nothing happened.  Their IT guys have tried all day to help me resolve this but it comes back to me not being able to get a list of my folders.

The only way in the past that I have been able to resolve this is by restoring Windows back to 18 Nov 2013 - but the, when I let the Windows updates run (which takes forever!) I get this problem back again, so to my simple mind there is something happening with the Windows updates that messes my system up.

At the moment I am current with Windows updates, having run all the latest Windows updates to see if they have resolved any problems.

Is there anyone out there who can give me some free advice? - unfortunately not able to afford to pay anyone.

How do I start Word or PowerPoint?

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 11:46 AM PDT

Split from this thread.

I purchased Microsoft Office when I purchased a new PC, an Asus all in one.  I can see Microsoft Excel listed in the apps detail listing, but not Word.  I know its there because I downloaded a document I emailed to myself.  Same with Powerpoint.  I can't see it, but I know its there because I installed MS Office for Home/Student after purchasing the PC.

1.  What can I do to get Powerpoint and Word to open without emailing documents.

Opening Word Perfect Docs via Word 2013 - registry fix

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 11:30 AM PDT

Hi

Windows 7 32 bit running Home Student office 2013

I have tons of Corel WP wpd files.  I want to click on the file, have Word open and convert the doc automatically, and then save it as a Word docx file

As it stands now, I have to open Word, find the file location, and go from there

I have attempted to set defaults to WPD (file association) but that as well does not work - nothing 'sticks'.

I would like to force the behavior through a registry entry

Failing that, is there a phone number I can call and pay a MS Support engineer to fix my issue?

Thanks

Ian

Warning message - "exceeded the maximum number of pages supported by Microsoft Word "

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 10:48 AM PDT

I have received the following warning message several times.

"You have exceeded the maximum number of pages supported by Microsoft Word or this document is damaged.  Microsoft Word will save the document, but to repair the document, use the Open and Repair command (click Open, and then click the arrow next to the Open button."

I click OK and the document becomes non-responsive.   When I close and reopen the repair is available.

Any Idea on What is causing this?   it is a recurring problem and sometime all the data is not recovered.

Calculate Date on Exit Form Field

I am trying to create a form that will calculate a return by date automatically.  i.e.  This document must be returned by (calculates 60 days out from post date at start of letter).  I can only get the calculations to work and it won't do dates.

Is there a work around?  Thanks in advance.

I can't edit rectangle shape point on Microsoft Word 2007?

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 10:31 AM PDT

Hi there, I apologise in advance if this comes across as  silly question.

I am trying to edit the points on a rectangle shape in Microsoft Word 2007 however once I have created the rectangle it will not let me click on edit shape. I have uploaded a screenshot of it and as you can see in the picture the 'edit shape' button is unclickable.

Do you guy's know why this is?

Why Can't Word be Enhanced to Provide True Regex Search Capability?

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 09:56 AM PDT

I am stymied by the inability of the cobbled-together "regex" search capabilities in Word to handle commonly-used regex constructs.  It would seem to me that it wold not be a herculean task to improve Word searching to provide an optional full regex search of one flavor or another.  Wouldn't the .NET version be a good candidate for this?

For those of us who use regexes in other contexts, the Word version is woefully inadequate.  Is this something that's in the pipeline, perhaps?

Where does Word store temporary copy of document starting with tilde ~ if opened on removable drive?

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 09:52 AM PDT

I'm trying to help a pal recover a lost word document.

His computer crashed while he had the file open in word.

Auto-recovery was not enabled, so I was looking for the  ~$xxx.docx version of the file.

but ... of course something odd is happening ...

If I open (say)  readme.doc from the hard drive the corresponding   ~$eadme.doc file appears in the same folder as the readme.doc

However when I open a document from a thumb drive (which is what my pal had done) I notice the ~$eadme.doc  is NOT created on the thumb drive...

... either it's not created at all ... or stored somewhere else.....................

Using another doc file opened from the thumb drive I've looked for the temp file (Win 8.1) on the hard drive here:

  1. "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Word"
  2. "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp"

but can't seem to find it....

Any education would be appreciated!

Thanks!

linking back and forth error

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 09:49 AM PDT

I need to create hyperlinks that jump back and forth between files (both Excel and Word).

When I try to return to the file I started from I get an error saying the file is open and I can't

open one by the same name even though it's the same file. The people using this collection of

files needs to navigate them freely. Is there something I need to check/uncheck to stop this error?

Or is there a way to close a file after I hyperlink to another file?

The weird thing is I thought this worked the way I wanted it to with some test files and I started

getting this error.

I need to link to a Word file from several Excel files and then return to the same

Excel file. What I want to do is create several Word files with different return links but which have a common

Word file embedded in them.

Microsoft Word

Is there a way to set the spacing parameters, etc in Microsoft word so that you do not have to reset them each time?

My boss is needing to set a letter head that he wants to be set up the same way each time without having to reset everything.  This is the only thing that he uses Word for.  Would i just need to create a document with the needed parameters and do a save as each time he needs it?

Hidden even pages in Word 2013

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 08:58 AM PDT

Hello,

I've run into a problem with hidden pages after inserting page numbers for odd and even pages, even numbers to the left, odd to the right (here I am stuck in the middle).

I'm working on a multi-section document for a government customer. The document has several front matter sections and multiple chapters. Two of the document requirements are that each section/chapter will begin on a right-side page, and the above mentioned even pages to the left and odd pages to the right. The problems is that Word hides even pages if "Different Odd & Even Pages" is selected. If text ends on an odd page, Word creates an even page without displaying the page. The page count in the lower left-hand corner will show a page skip, e.g. p. 51 followed by p. 53. As expected, if I print to paper or pdf, the hidden pages get printed.

How do I make Word display that even page? I don't have an issue with the hidden pages, but I won't be the one revising the document in the future. At some point, others less familiar with Word will notice a "missing page" and add another even page, creating much havoc. I could simply add a page break to force Word to display the even page. However, the blank page will display a page number. And this customer wants blank pages to be literally blank, i.e. no oft seen, "This page left intentionally blank."

Cheers.

Paragraph spacing is behaving like padding

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 08:17 AM PDT

I'm trying to create two consecutive paragraphs such that both have their own border and both have their own background color. What's ruining this for me is that Word is treating paragraph spacing like padding (in the HTML sense) by coloring the spacing and including the spacing within the border. What I want is actual whitespace (margin) between the paragraphs. Is there a way to achieve this in Word?

Word 2007 question

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 04:23 AM PDT

Help!  Somehow my entire word program itself has been corrupted.  All extensions appear as *.doc or *.pdf, so if I try to save a document that is currently open it automatically adds the corrupted extension.  Some of the actual documents within my files still have the .doc extension while others appear as ~$name.doc.  I am afraid to open any of the uncorrupted files since I will not be able to resave them.  Any thoughts?

WORD 2013 will not print to PDF -not enough memory or disk space to repaginate or print this docment

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 12:56 AM PDT

I am using Win 8.1 64bit, 8GB Ram and MS-OFFICE 2013. I have also, Acrobat X1 Pro.

Why am I seeing 'There is not enough memory or disk space to repaginate or print this document' every time I go to print a few pages of the document to pdf? There is no such problems when printed to regular printers.

Acrobat and its driver is up to date.

The document is over 300 pages, so I print to pdf in increments.

The same document printed to pdf fine when I had Win 7, 64 bit, same 8 Gs of Ram and Word 2010 and the same Acrobat X1 Pro.

I saw somewhere where someone thinks removing the Custom XML data from the document using the Inspect option is a possible solution. Is that safe to do? Could that be a solution or won't portions of the document be deleted without my knowing?

Any suggestions, anyone?

Microsoft Word Changing the references

Posted: 17 Sep 2014 12:42 AM PDT

When I write reports, it will have photographs numbered and then the report will have references to it.  More often, after finishing a long report, I may have to change the order of the photographs and the numbers. This is the easy part. But changing the references in the report becomes very hard. Is there a way to reference the numbers while writing the report so that it gets automatically updated? ( Something similar to the paragraph numbering?)

Error opening Word 2103

Using the Preview Pane - Word says Sorry, something went wrong and Word was unable to start. (24)

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 09:44 PM PDT

Hey Guru's;

Got a machine with Windows 7 x64 and MS Office 2013 (via click to run / Office 365 subscription).

If you enable the preview pane, and click on a word document, you get this error message;

Sorry, something went wrong and Word was unable to start. (24)

I've bing'd for a solution, and found quite a few people saying they just turned off the preview pane, but the user of the affected computer insists on using the preview pane.

Is there a fix for this?

Mathew.

Error Loading Old Word Documents

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 08:38 PM PDT

Every time I open an old word document there are random symbols between the words I have already written. They look like bullets and paragraph symbols throughout the text I have already written. Is there anyway to undo this without having to go through all my word documents and erase them all?

Word File size jumped

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 07:47 PM PDT

Until September 6, my 1200-page book's file size was about 6500 kb. (All text except for one b/w line drawing map.) In the next version, having made only small changes, the file size jumped to about 13,000 kb. The page numbers shown in the TOC's before and after 9/6 are almost the same. Layouts, margins, fonts, table counts, etc. all the same.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Steve

Unwanted line reflows or reformattings

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 07:28 PM PDT

1. In Draft view, the displayed pages have slightly more characters on a line than in Print Layout view. This makes certain tasks very difficult.

2. When I select the header area vs. the text area, the displayed pages also have a different layout. This too makes certain tasks very difficult.

3. When I change the selection from Header to Text or the reverse, the displayed page often jumps far away. Most annoying!

I see no good reason for any of these discrepancies.

I have just tried opening office word and a message popped up saying, " Something went wrong. We couldn't start your program. Please try starting it again. If it won't start , try repairing office from 'programs and features' in the control panel.
I have tried to do the latter but repair is not an option, only change and uninstall. Any ideas????

Split view

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 04:41 PM PDT

In Windows 7, I could work in Word and PowerPoint side by side in what I thought was referred to Compatibility view. You would just drag with Word or PowerPoint to the side and it would show up in half screen thereby enabling you to work in both without switching programs. Is that not available in Windows 8.1 and Office 2013 products?

Excel and Word printing problems on tabloid paper

Posted: 16 Sep 2014 04:14 PM PDT

I have tried just about everything. Set the paper size to tabloid and set the margins to multiple pages (as I want two pages printed on each tabloid sheet).

The print preview looks fine - but it prints out in much smaller size - as if it was fitting the two pages onto letter size paper.

Office 2003 and 2007 on same machine.

Posted: 10 Jun 2007 09:18 PM PDT

I have had a similar problem trying to run office XP and 2003 on the same
machine. I too wish to switch back and forth between different versions of
Access and get a similar message from the Windows Installer. (See my post in
this list -- 'XP and 2003 on the same machine' 06-10-07). I found the
solution was to install Office 2003 in a entirely different directory than XP
and to copy the entire contents of the 2003 install CD into that directory.
Windows installer still kicks in for a few seconds but I can now swtich back
and forth between versions of Access without having to insert the install CD.

Then I suspect you have pressed "R" for RECOVERY CONSOLE, and are not doing

Hi Kaj,

I too have had this problem and found a partial solution today (thanks
Brink). Go to http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files.html?ltr=S
and run the SCANNOW function - then reboot.

It removed the font problem I was having but not the underlying Office
"Application Configuration Change" that prompted the font error.

Good luck
