Good. Distinctly up to date versions are available at www.sunfreeware.com: I
find Sun's official releases of software to often lag way, way, way behind
the latest FSF or other open source releases, especially including SSH.

Getting the Suns to play nice with the Linux systems is often quite a lot of
fun, especially because the Linux version of NIS is so much better to work
with.

No, it stays DVI the whole way. If you want to convert, you have to add a
DVA-VGA adapter.

It all goes through the same bilateral switches. The cable set includes
audio in. The only extra connectors on the box, are the USB ones, and the
audio 'out'. I got mine from kvmdirect.com, and they were able to supply
the correct cable sets. The only problem is that after this unit, Belkin,
then launched the 'DD' version, which supports lower sync rates cheaper.
This had problems, and is currently 'withdrawn', so finding the right unit
and cables, requires talking to a company that knows the Belkin products
better than Belkin do...

Okay.

Thank you to everyone who has responded. I've had a long chat with Nigel
about what he actually wants, and combined that with what you guys have
suggested.

I've managed to persuade him to free off 1 of the 250gb drives, so that
one along with the 300gb and the 40gb will be going into the new machine
as fixed drives.

The other two 250gb drives he wants to be able to swap out of the linux
box and into his 'doze box. These two therefore I cannot reformat. They'll
have to stay as ntfs discs.

So. If I use the 40gb drive for my /boot / and swap partitions, and then
somehow use lvm for the 300gb and single reformatted 250gb to form my
/home partition. Can I then get a SATAII card to drive the two NTFS discs
so that they can be hot-swapped out?

I've tried to read up on SATA and I'm still a bit hazy on one point. Can I
use the existing 250gb IDE drives with a SATA card? He won't buy any new
hardware beyond a card, SATA, IDE, whatever, to enable him to have all
five drives available all at the same time, but if the SATAII will allow
him to hot swap the IDE drives, then he'll get one for his 'doze machine
as well.

Many thanks,

Dave

And what does "free" say? Or /proc/meminfo, when doing such large
allocations? OK, so you'd have to do an allocation large enough to go past
the system RAM and get into swap to really see it happen. But as I
understand it, that memory is still relegated to that program, and is
available *for that program*. At least, that's how I remember building
stacks from scratch: if someone's invented a way to actually release it to
the system instead of merely for that program's use in its own stack, I'm
going to be *VERY* surprised.

And in fact, you can even get away with doing that for quite a while: the
memory allocated will wind up being heavily in swap, and if it's not
actually being used for much, most of it will be swapped out at any given
time.

OK, that makes more sense: by freeing up unused stuff off what is
effectively the end of the stack, that could work for releasing the
resources.

Who knows? It's closed source, very proprietary, multi-platform, and clearly
written for big iron, not casual implementation by any means. Using its own
memory management makes sense, but at some point you sort of *have* to talk
to glibc unless you want to rewrite a lot of very, very basic functions from
scratch.

Here's the overview, it's really not hard. The BIOS will only boot off a

install disk and use that.

Copy the floppy image to a file, loop mount it...
mount -o loop flpimg.dat /mnt/temp
now cd to it and edit the startup scripts, etc.

Opinion: I like Slack better than SYSLINUX, I used it for years, I ran
BSD at one time, and it's totally easy to understand and edit.

When you're done, run mkisofs with the -b option (READ the man page!) to
create the CD.

AFAIK there is no general purpose software to do this, most are special
purpose, like mondo, and at least the old version, on which I gave up,
really didn't want to be general purpose. If you write a tool, please
make it human readable, no XML, no GUI, understandable config, etc.

You likely have a non-standard partition table byte set.
Suggest you zero out the disk prior to installation (i forget the exact
'dd' command to do this in linux, but even a FDISK /mbr from a win98
boot disk should do it) - and then wipe the unintended install on the
unintended 250GB SATA - proceed with setup onto 120GB.

This route may be easier, if the ATI card is so problematic (something I

GDM Login Screen Problem

Posted: 31 Dec 2005 08:18 PM PST

On Mon, 02 Jan 2006 03:01:11 +0100, Chen Yang <com> wrote:

Hm, I was wrong, I triggered on the word "audit", which occurs in the
log messages when selinux prevents something.

I just searched the gdm sources for the string AUDIT and rejected, and
none of them occurs in a string in the source. Probably the strings
come from some library used by gdm (there is 35 of them, and thre may be
more if a library calls another).

Is there any surrounding text in /var/log/gdm/:0.log? Are there other
files than :0.log* in the directory?

I suspect that gdm is capable of outputing more error messages.

First I assume that you have this line in /etc/inittab:

x:5a:once:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

In the file /etc/X11/prefdm you will find this

if [ -n "$preferred" ]; then
$preferred "$@" >/dev/null 2>&1
if [ $? -ne 127 ]; then
exec $0 "$@"
exit $?
fi
fi

Replace "/dev/null" with "/tmp/gdm.stderr".

Open a virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1), login as root and do

telinit 3; sleep 10; telinit 5

Just wait for the gdm screen to not showup. When it should have been there,
switch back to the vt1 console again. Check that the /var/log/gdm/:0.log
has the error message, and restore the original /etc/X11/prefdm.

Check if there are any more meaningfull messages in /tmp/gdm.stderr.

If this does not help, I can only suggest you use "strace" to find
out what is going on.

In /etc/X11/prefdm, change the line with /dev/null above, to:

/usr/bin/strace -o /tmp/gdm.strace -ff $preferred "$@" >/dev/null 2>&1

Open a virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1), login as root and do

telinit 3; sleep 10; telinit 5

Just wait for the gdm screen to not showup. When it should have been there,
switch back to the vt1 console again. ps-aux and note the pid of the *second*
(child) gdm. Check that the /var/log/gdm/:0.log has the error message, and
restore the original /etc/X11/prefdm. Repeat the above telinit commands. Or
just kill -2 the strace process. That should make it detach all processes.
Login the usual way (kill -1 the gdm-binary) and inspect
/tmp/gdm.strace.<pid of second gdm>. Search for AUDIT or other pieces of
the error message. Hopefully you will find something like

write(4, "AUDIT ... rejected from local host\n", 35) = 35

Then look at the lines above that line. They tell what the program was doing
before it wrote the error message. Look particularly for lines having
"= -1 E" in them like this:

connect(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path="/var/run/nscd/socket"}, 110) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

There is some chance that this will reveal what is going wrong.

I am not sure if the error will be in the second gdm process. There will
probably be a host of files in /tmp, with different pids, since some of
the programs involved are shell scripts that invoke various sed and similar
commands. "grep execve /tmp/gdm.strace*" will give some indication of
what programs are run by what processes. Look for gdmgreeter-binary,
that seems a likely candidate.

new to Linux, where are they/how do you download files

Thank you. I had downloaded a bittorrent client but that doesn't work

files, so thanks for confirming that. The only other thing I can think

The window manager is a process separate from X. I don't know how

Yes, this is it.

This seems to indicate that the xfs font server just started. Did it die?
The default config file is /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config.

There is no file "fixed" on my system either. As Peter noted, it is
the last resort fallback, but that does not say where its data comes
from. I guess it will make the font server give you *any* font if it
has any at all, but preferring one that is marked monospaced or fixed-width
or something like that.

You have not told if you did "ps -ef | grep xfs", and what the outcome was.
If the server is running, does it not have any fonts? (I suppose you are
using a virtual console (Ctrl-Alt-F1 through F4, for example) to execute
commands when the X server fails to run.

The message "Fatal server error" sounds like it is the X server proper
that is deciding to quit since it does not have a font. No, that is not
likely. Could it be xfs that was outputing this message? Where did you
find it? If you found it in /var/log/messages, there is probably
"xfs[1234]:" or something similar in front of it.

The xfs config file, has among others this:

# where to look for fonts
#
catalogue = /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled,

Yeah, but I am not sure if this file will disappear once the xfs server quits,
so I would prefer "ps -ef | grep xfs to know if it is running.

OK

I'm dying to hear about what causes the window manager problem (and the :17
message), and also what is going on with xfs. I suggest you try to esablish
as many facts as possible about everything concerning xfs first. If the process
is there and running, "lsof -p <xfs-process-id> shows it is using the file
/tmp/.font-unix/fs7100, the font files are there, as detailed in the config
file, then you could switch to the window manager issue.

My approach to debugging the window manager issue is to use "strace" (install
it from the CDs if you don't have it). You may have to change the file
/etc/X11/prefdm temporarily to put "strace -ff -o /tmp/gdm.strace "
in front of "$preferred "$@" >/dev/null 2>&1". Yes, also change
/dev/null to /tmp/gdm.out" in this line. Examining the strace files is
kind of hard. Write here to get help, I don't know yet if you will need
to do this, depending in the xfs issue.

Word 2010 mail merge to Directory is dropping some address blocks

Posted: 15 Mar 2014 02:44 PM PDT

I have an address file generated by a calligraphy program that only prints to a lettering bed.
In order to print out a proof list for the customer,
I converted the calligraphy address file to WordPad, and saved it as an RTF file.
Then I added an extra _ to the first record, and changed the field and record delimiters to $,! respectively.
I wound up having to take out the paragraph marks, also.  I replaced them with $, a field delimiter.
When I try to use Word 2010 to merge into a Directory, Word skips any file that doesn't have the same no. of lines as the first record.
It tells me "Record # contained too many data fields." The first one usually has 3 lines: name, addres, city.
Sometimes there are 4 or 5 lines, though because of an apartment number or other people living at the same address.
The Automerge Field and Automerge Field1 that Word adds, doesn't seem to help.
How can I get Word 2010to accept a variable number of lines in this address file?
I am using Windows 7 at home and Windows XP at work.  Thanks for your help.
PS. I've converted the RTF file to a Word 2010 file, and it still doesn't work.
I also need to alphabetize the names.
Thanks so much for any help you can give me.
I've already lost 2 calligraphy orders because I can't give the customer a proof list.

My word 2007 not saving

Posted: 15 Mar 2014 01:55 PM PDT

Hello,

My 2007 Word is not saving. I opened an old resume to update it and made the changes and continued to save as I went, assuming it to be saving but when I went to do a "save as", it responded the same way a save would but did not open the window to change the name/location. When I went to close it, it kept asking me if I wanted to save but nothing would happen. When I finally clicked no it would close without any of the new material. I tried to send it to myself while writing it sure enough it did not save any of it.

Any help would be appreciated. It's really not a good time to have to purchase anything.

Inserted font switches from the default Calibri to Times New Roman

Posted: 15 Mar 2014 09:21 AM PDT

This is driving me nuts. The default font style is Calibri. Word 2013 (subscription 365) keeps changing what type of font I'm typing in. One minute it is the default Calibri, 11pt next it's Times New Roman 12pt. I've checked the default font and options--nothing strange there. It happens in multiple documents and also occurs if I copy and paste from another document that has Calibri font it gets pastes as Times New Roman. Somehow, it's seeing that as a default and I can't get it out of the system. I'm wasting hours correcting font so it's not all over the place. Furthermore, if I simply tell it to apply the "normal body tyle" (Calibri) to the text, it doesn't change it from Times New Roman to Calibri as it should.

Please help!!!

I am copying dictionary definitions from a program into Word 2010. These entries have bold, italics, and underlines that I want to keep, however they also have different font faces and colors that I want to discard.

  • When I paste using "Keep Text Only" I lose the bold, italics, and underlines I need to keep, but the font face correctly matches the one the selected in Normal style.
  • When I past using "Merge Format" I keep the bold, italics, and underlines I want, but the font face is not changed to the one the selected in Normal style.

How can I set the merge formatting to remove all different font faces, but still keep he bold, italics, and underlines? Is there a registry entry somewhere I can edit?

I am taking a class on Word, but my teacher doesn't know anything about creating a form or a template, nor, does she know what you should or should not check when looking at the Formatting Restriction styles that are or are not allowed.

I have been trying to find some kind of list that will explain what each option will restrict (Body Text, Body Text 2, Body Text 3, etc.). Can someone direct me? I want to allow formatting of the body of a document however they need to, within reason. I don't want font changed, but if they need to insert a table, graphics, SmartArt, etc., how can I allow this while locking the other fields of a Block style business letter? Is there a document that explains it, or a video I can watch, or an explanation that is easy to understand? I appreciate any guidance.

My Office suite has just ceased operating Error code 30089-13

Original titile: 30089-13

I am operating Windows 8.1 and have been for some weeks (months?). My Office suite has just ceased operating. Error code 30089-13. Have attempted both quick and Long repair facilities via Control Panel with no result. System asserts Internet connection not operating (not True)

Have tried deleting Office suite and re-installing. That fails to work either.

Why is this happening and what is the fix please?

Joe, no need to be rude when soliciting help, you might get
"blackballed". What Mark is trying to say is that Microsoft base most of
their recommendations on the theory, while most of the responses you
will get here are from the practical. Persons who have actually
encountered your situation or concern in the real world situation and
have not encountered the theoretical issues that MS mentioned.

Maybe the reason you are unable to find any MS articles on the matter is
that it might be a MS engineer on the phone rambling. I would take
real world experience over theory any day.

I have not personally experience any noticeable performance hit for
deleted accounts.

While Nick and Mark, work on their beers, which I hope is a Red Stripe

before installing SP2 or you will have issues with it now working after
the installation.

not when I collect my email via outlook?

Exchange ActiveSync on a Single Server

Really not much is needed. The default Exchange 2003 installation (and
upgrade to SP2) allows for Exchange ActiveSync out-of-the-box. It should
just be the case of generating your own certificate (or purchasing one),
distributing to the Windows Mobile devices and creating the partnership
(either by connecting to ActiveSync on a PC or by changing the ActiveSync
configuration on your Pocket PC).

Hmm.. i think u misunderstand my point . We realise that when we put one more
layer be it anti spam or email proxy infront of the email exchange . It will
generate this kind of notification message already . So we find that the
message is quit confusing . Because we want a delivery reciept but you
respond that message relayed to other party . So how do i know whether my
mail has been deliver to correct party already or not ?

We know that it difficult to track the email . But i think it should
generate a proper notification rather than "relay" and it not my problem .

Nowaday seldom ppl put exchange as first layer already . So if this function
cant work well with the today technology . It believe it need to be redesign
again .

Going through the QBDG wizard here is what I'm inputing:
Name/Alias - Accounting
Apply Filter to recieptients in and below: DOMAIN.loc/
Filter: (Customized)
Find: Exchange Recipients In: Entire Domain
TABS-
General: "Users with Exchange mailbox" checked
Storage: "Mailboxes on any server"
Advanced:
Field: User > Member of...
Condition: Is (Exactly)...
Value: Accounting
Find Now - Returns nothing

This and the previous way I queried failed to return anything. Any ideas?

TIA!

You were taken in by believing that ultimately you could assist in "solving"
this problem, when its very existence gives rise to the speculation that this
word processor is deliberately unable to receive material accurately and
easily.

Nobody at the outset would expect dysfunctionality to be an inherent
"feature" unless a bug that was flagged two years ago is still wasting Ken's
time because there may be an economic reason to make it clumsy and irritating
to use, given that it might encourage the user to move to a "pay for" product
that receives material quickly and easily when using the very same
"Edit/Copy" "Edit/Paste" from the same company.

You have been taken in, in the sense that you earnestly care to help people
who are having troubles, without considering that some of those troubles may
be still persisting not because they can't be fixed, but because there's no
will to fix them. Which means the producer is wasting your time by allowing
the fault, and the enquiries, to remain indefinately into the future, so you
have to unecessarily continue to assist them, when the simple bug could have
been fixed.

Helpful people on forums may not have even imagined that their kindness
could be abused in this way, and their time therefore wasted indefinately
into the future, by a continuing intransigence to fix a major inconvenience
in the operation of a key function - Copy/Paste.

You don't have to have the problem to be taken in - you have generously
given your time freely and kindly to assist a user whose problem would be a
simple bug fix, but hasn't been fixed in two years, and in my humble opinion,
will never be fixed. That's how you've been taken in - believing that simple
problems would be rectified to make all products maximally functional. Works
Word Processor clearly has a major dysfunction that nobody would expect to be
built-in to a word processor - the abject inability to accurately reproduce
part of a web page - how can that be in the stable of the biggest software
company of the world - surely it's indefensible that this post needs to be
written.

Would you specify that any word processor you used should only be able to
receive unformatted text using Copy/Paste - I don't think so - but that's
what's on offer here. And you only learn this by using it and being
inconvenienced and irritated.

Because you can't believe this is the intended level of functionality
offered by this particular product, you go on the forum.

And then you realise that this was reported two years ago. And then you
begin to wonder how this can be. And then you wonder if people who are
attempting to help aren't having their time wasted. And that's not right that
their kindness should be abused in this way.

If you can't see this, then I guess you genuinely haven't been taken in.

Thanks anyway - it was good of you to try and help me and to post.

Bye.

Hi,

I do not have your version of Works, so what I would do is, click on Import
to see what file format you can select. Most likely it will be vCal format
(*.vcs).

Also pay attention to your export, be sure to select what you want.

Perhaps this for more info.....

converting word from works suite 2003 windows xp to vista works 8.

Posted: 11 Jul 2008 04:19 PM PDT

Hi conlyn,

I agree with what Ronald Sommer said.

Ken

However lets talk about what you are trying to do.

Microsoft Word is a very powerful word processor.

Microsoft Works Word processor is a simple word processor.

Effectively you are down grading your word processor capabilities.

I do not think you are going to be very happy with the outcome.

In a very short you will be back to this newsgroup asking questions as to
why Works Word processor doesn't do something, it was so easy to do with
Microsoft Word. You might get a work around response on how to accomplish
the task, but you are not going to be happy.

If it was me I would be looking for a different solution other then down
grading word processor capabilities.

Hula Baloo's post offers some suggestions.

By the way, Works Word processor is included with your Works Suite 2003, it
is hidden and replaced by Microsoft Word

Microsoft Works 2002 Word

Here's what I did with Works Suite 2004. Insert the 1st CD. When it
asks if you want an express or custom install, tell it you want the
CUSTOM install. Then, when it asks which program(s) you want to
install, tell it you want WORD. When it finishes, you should be able to
find WORD on the START menu.
Another way to do it is to open Windows Explorer and examine the 1st
Works CD. Find the folder with Word, open it, then run the SETUP
program from that folder. That will only install Word without going
through the Works install. Either way should give you a place to start
Word from the Start menu.
After installing, you might want to get the latest updates because
there are a number of them.
