Microsoft Word - Table of Contents vs Cross-Reference

Microsoft Word - Table of Contents vs Cross-Reference

Table of Contents vs Cross-Reference

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 02:59 PM PST

Hello.

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me determine which of these two would work best. I don't quite understand each one as I am not entirely familiar with either one. Let me provide some background though.

I am in the process of updating/redoing our Policies and Procedures and we are wanting to separate them based on the area (Education, Social Services, Disabilities, etc.). I did one using an Automatic Table and it seemed to work well, though it doesn't do entirely what we'd like. For each area there are multiple policies. Each policy has it's own letter assigned to it. However, my boss wants the capability for the policy # to update if we inserted one in between two letters.

For example:

Education policies are listed A-Z. We revise/add a new policy in between N and O. We now have N, --, and O. Is it possible at all to have it automatically change the policy #'s, for example N, --, and O to N, O, and P (and whatever else is after those)? Or is that not something that can be done? My boss just suggested I check into Cross-Referencing as an option instead of the Automatic Table, but I don't quite understand how it works. Any thoughts?

It's a very useful feature for large documents, so it's unfortunate that it's disabled for large documents.

word doc problems with TOC/numbering and styles

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 08:33 AM PST

I have inherited a document, 100 plus pages, likely created with word 97 or 2000 and has been modified by at least 6-10 other users over the years.  The autonumbering is messed up (to put it mildly), in many sections its manually numbered, in other sections its automatic.

The TOC was generated manually, likely because the styles are also very messed up.

It appears (my guess) that previous authors tried to use styles to generate a TOC automatically, but also gave up. (Styles not implemented consistently within the document.  Before I tried to bring styles to some sort of semblance, complete paragraphs would be listed in the TOC.

I tried to modify the styles (manually modify  heading1, 2,3 etc) to be able to get auto document numbering   1.0, 1.1, 1.1.1, etc.

The numbering and styles appear to be very convoluted, despite my attempts the last three days to improve them, I've had very limited success in doing so.

I've read many tutorials, seen many pages, tried the various tips and bottom line is that they still do not play well with each other.

I even tried to start with a blank document template  and had limited success with that as well (margin formatting issues trying to cut/paste tables and diagrams from old version to new blank template)

When I apply styles, the numbering disappears at times, or numbering goes out of sequence, resorting with a restart to 1.0 or 1.1 . if I click on numbering, then the styles are eliminated and  consequently the TOC does not display that item. My choice is for some items either to display that single item in the TOC without numbering.

At times using the various tutorials and tips on various web pages such as ShaunaKellys website, I've had limited luck- it starts out fine, works for a couple of paragraphs  the a document goes from section 5.0 to 1.1 when I indent.

Can I reset styles to default or import a style format template to this document, to override the many things that were done by many different authors to this document?

Thanks

How to have Multiple Instance of Word 2003

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 08:21 AM PST

I am talking about a true second instance - not merely a word document in it's own window.      Example - I open two documents and I want to view File=>Page Setup in both documents.    The minute I do so in one document , I can not do anything in the second document.      Is there another version of Word that allows multiple instances?

my microsoft word 2013 won't open!

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 08:16 AM PST

So my Microsoft word 2013 wouldn't open so I googled how to fix it but all the solutions were for if when you clicked on it something came up saying error. For me that's not the case... When I click on it the little loading blue circle appears beside my mouse for a few seconds and then disappears and word 2013 doesn't open... Nothing happens at all. I tried some of the solutions for if it says error like updating my laptop and everything but nothing is working. The Microsoft word was working less than a month ago so I don't know why it stopped working! I don't really like phoning the helplines so if there are any suggestions that'd be great.

Footnote on last row and page break on hypenation

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 06:32 AM PST

I have problem to make page break at specific place in Word document.
There is footnote and hypenation on row where I want to page break. There is space for 1 another row on page.
I cannot change size of footnote separator to change space on page because of influence on other pages.
I cannot insert page break because of hypenation and aligning (justify).
I tried to insert text block at the end of page to purge spare row. But unexpectedly paragraph (which is large more than 1 page) breaks page after first line
to make room for line which a push to next page by text block.
There is no "
Keep lines together", "Keep with next", "Page break before" or "Widow/Orphan control" checked.
Help me what can I do to make normal paragraph flow.

Thanks in advance

Easy changing text in multiple agreement types - somehow

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 01:09 AM PST

Hello,
its hard to describe. I got multiple agreement types. Every is different in only a few things, mostly are the same. I neeed to make it easy in one document, so I dont need to change one thing in eight documents, but only one.

What did I expect - I was trying to search for some checkbox usage. You have one basic template, if you select option 1 - it adds some text to some marker, if you select 2, it adds other text to some marker and so on. But this is how I was thinking about it, doesnt need to be this way.

Best reply will be, if there is any chance how to do it really easy to change text inside the agreement, because some types have same text (different than other types) so I dont need to change that one on multiple places aswell.

Thanks for your info, how to do this.

About my header problem

The incorrect carryover of a Part B header to Part C happened because I did not check "make first page different" or whatever it's called. I didn't try it because I never needed it in the past, but it sort of makes sense.

Unprotect macro in Word 2003

Posted: 18 Feb 2014 06:44 PM PST

I have a document where the user fills in fields on the front page.  These fields populate the header and footer.  There are about seventy "sections" in the document - both the footer and the left side of the header are identical throughout but the right side of the header changes.  I have written a macro to print preview the document (so the user can see that the header and footer have, indeed, been populated) then to hide the fields as these are no longer required.  For this to work, I have to protect the document.  The macro works like a charm until I attempt to unprotect the document (so it can be edited).  I have tried both of the following codes (but not in the same macro!), with the same result:

ActiveDocument.Unprotect

ActiveDocument.Unprotect Password:=""

After the macro has run, I am faced with Word telling me it's updating the table of contents and do I want to update the page numbers only or the entire table.  There was no mention of any table of contents in the macro.  Because Word was so insistent on updating the table of contents, I included that in the macro.  Again, it worked like a charm until I put in the code to unprotect the document.  I was again faced with Word telling me it's updating the table of contents, with the same questions, even though it had just done that.  Yes, the document is unprotected, but I need to not be asked about updating the table of contents.

My macro is currently:

    ActiveDocument.PrintPreview
    ActiveDocument.ClosePrintPreview
    Selection.HomeKey Unit:=wdStory
    Selection.MoveDown Unit:=wdLine, Count:=2
    Selection.MoveRight Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=2, Extend:=wdExtend

        .Text = "table of contents"
        .Replacement.Text = ""
        .Forward = True
        .Wrap = wdFindContinue
        .Format = False
        .MatchCase = False
        .MatchWholeWord = False
        .MatchWildcards = False
        .MatchSoundsLike = False

Question:
To troubleshoot, I'll have to do it the hard way by restarting Word namely closing the Word doc and opening it again. This surely doesn't make sense. There must be some quick solution or it's simply a bug?? Pls help me out!!!

Rich Text Content Control being copied in protected mode

Posted: 18 Feb 2014 05:54 PM PST

Dear Experts,

In my scenario, I have created an input form with a number of Rich Text Content Controls and the form has been protected for form filling.

Why I found unexpected is, in protected mode, if I copy all text in one content control and paste it to the other, not only the selected text, but also the content control is being pasted inside the target control.

This is serious in my scenario since the form has already been spread to whole company employees for form filling, and the data are expected to be consolidated by a consoldiation prgram, reading all input fields automatically and generate one output file. I have tested this scenario, for the field "txtEEPassportNo1", the program will wronly read the data as "60004 Passport 2" instead of "60004 Passport 1".

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Steven

Problems wrapping text in Word

Posted: 18 Feb 2014 05:18 PM PST

Hello,

I'm a rank amateur in Word. I'm trying to place a picture in a text box, and have the text wrap around the picture, but am encountering problems, as below:

1. In some cases, I'm able to select the various wrapping options "Square", "Tight", "Through", "In Front of Text,"  etc., but no matter which option I select, there is not affect on the text (The wrapping remains unchanged).

2. In other cases, I'm not able to select the various wrapping options (In Layout, Text Wrapping).

Many thanks in advance if anyone has any ideas to point me in the right direction.

Unable to compress images in Word 2003

Posted: 18 Feb 2014 04:37 PM PST

Hello,

All of a sudden I find I'm unable to reduce the size of a Word 2003 document by double clicking an image, selecting "compress" then reducing the resolution. The "compress" button is simply no longer there - it literally was one minute than not the next.

Another change that happened at the same time was that I can no longer remove the white space at the top of each page in print view. I'm not so bothered about this, but thought it might be significant in diagnosing the problem.

Thanks for any suggestions

I would just keep trying to activate automatically. If that works,
then great.( It won't be so time consuming as repeated attempts at
telephone activation.) If not, then take the product back since it's
not working and get a replacement copy. Hoperfully, that should "just

How Do I Activate?

Posted: 24 May 2006 08:58 PM PDT

Hi Cyk,

When you use the 'Get the Beta' link on http://microsoft.com/office/preview and select which products you want to download for
evaluation you should see on the next page or two forward the product keys to use to install.

For activation, there was an issue with the servers earlier today, but should now be working.

I'm guessing here, but did you have office 2003 in C:\Program

to go there by default. It should detect a conflict though.

If I'm installing two versions of Office on the same machine I install
each into a directory such as C:\Program Files\Office 10 etc. It works
for me.

I guess what you do next depends on what problems you are having.

Thanks Alan,

While I was waiting for a response I installed Windows - on the way to
doing that I setup a lapton on the same line. I discovered that the
connection was extremly poor. While Windows would connect, the
connection (web-wise) was not usable.

There are three cable in question - cable from NIC to wall connector -
cable from wall connector to second wall connector, and cable from 2nd
wall connector to router.

Yes that third cable was bad. When I swapped it out the connection was
pure. I booted with Knoppix and the web came up right away.

So your deduction was 100% right on - if only I had posted earlier.

The sad thing was that I tested the line earlier and it seemed to work.
Lights on both the NICs and the Router all looked good through-out the
entire process.

Yes, as another user with the same rights can go offline with CRM. The user
can access the Outlook CRM, but just can't synch. Are there any key things I
should be looking for? The user is running Windows XP SP2, Outlook 2k all
needed patches, and the server is Windows 2000 Adv Server, MSCRM 1.2, and SQL
Serv 2000 Enterprise.

Depending on your situation, you may consider switching the recovery model
of the crm databases to simple other than full. This will also reduce the
log file size. The only caveat is that you will ever only be able to recover
to your last good full backup.

MS CRM SQL High Availability

Posted: 20 Oct 2004 08:23 PM PDT

There are a few ways to approach this.

1) If you are not using the SFO client, then a clustered DB should be OK. The
issue with the cluster not being supported is due to problems encountered if the
failover occurs during the process of a user going offline. The replication
gets messed up.

2) Have your SQL server use a NAS device for its data storage. Then keep a
second mirrored server available in a "cold" state. In the even t of a failure
of the primary, the backup can be brought online to take the place of the
primary. The key to this is that both machines would be sonfigured with the
same machine name, etc, so from the standpoint of the other machines, they are
identical. There have abeen a few CRM users that have opted for this approach.

They aren't perfect solutions, but they can work.

CRM Error when assigning an account to another user

Posted: 20 Oct 2004 06:05 PM PDT

Hi,

How many records does the CRM database hold? There is an issue which
updating security roles when there are hundreds or thousands of records in
the database. There is a patch for it. This has something to do with the
security identifiers not being updated correctly. When you change the
permissions for a userrole of for a user the changes would not be changed for
all the objects in the DB.

More information can be found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;835292

I don't know if this is the solution but it might be worth a try.

One thing to note on this is that existing records will not be changed when you
change this setting. It will take affect for new updates though moving forward.

Exchange email router on a Windows 2003 cluster

Posted: 20 Oct 2004 10:47 AM PDT

While not supported, it will function. If you do a Google search on this groups
history, you will find some steps outlined by someone a few months ago that
talked about the installation.

The big issue though is that inbound emails can end up being duplicated in CRM
as each node in the cluster may send the same msg on to CRM. Other than that,
from what I've heard, it does work fine for outbound.

I have te same problem. Remember that you should install the email router in
the SMTP gateway so, if you have a front end exchange with load balancing you
can install there, instead of the cluster (as a posible escenario).

I think that Microsoft will solve this in the next version of CRM (2.0 in
the first half of 2005).

Assign WorkFlow Loop

Posted: 20 Oct 2004 09:43 AM PDT

Try this out:
Add a picklist to your case form with values: Null (Default Value), Level 1,
Level 2, Level 3. Then, in the workflow, do something like this:

When Case is assigned
if
Case.CustomPicklist <> Level 2
Case.CustomPicklist <> Level 3
then
Update Case.CustomPicklist = Level 1
Send Email To Complainee
Wait 1 day
if
Case.Statecode = active
then
Update Case.CustomPicklist = Level 2
Assign : User 2
Send Mail Case Re-Assigned
wait 1 day
end if
if
Case.Statecode = active
then
Update Case.CustomPicklist = Level 3
Assign : User 3
Send Mail Case Re-Assigned
end if
else if Case.Statecode <> Active
then
Send Mail Case Resolved
end

I'm not sure I got it exactly right in there, but you get the idea. This
way, on the Assign event, it only moves up the workflow if it is not already
Level 2 or Level 3. That should avoid loops.
Good luck!

Domain logon name case sensitive?

The case of the entry in CRM doesn't really matter. What matters is whether or
not hte user can login to the Domain. It sounds like he can. I'd double check
that the user has a license & appropriate roles assigned to the user.

It is true that the button next to the Business Unit lookup field is gray.
Instead, you should use the menubutton 'Actions'. There's the option 'Change

Before they are a Lead, what are they?

Simple solution....just use an existing or new pick list and call it
something like "lead Type" make one of the values "Suspect" or
"marketing list" or something that would denote a difference. Then, in
your views, build the appropriate views based upon the need of the
users....filter for just the records that they need for the various
ways they work.

One of the ways we have dealt with this is I added a picklist and used
values of "contacted" or uncontacted" (the default is uncontacted)so
in effect we have a couple of stages in the "lead" cycle before we
convert qualified leads to account/contac/opportunities or disqualify
them which makes them inactive leads.

Where did you create the files? If you attached them in Notes or sales
literature, then they ares stored in the DB.

As for the permossions issue, find out more about what he changed and try
changing them all back to normal. Or try uninstalling/re-installing the CRM
Exchange Router.

IT Asset Tracking for MS-CRM?

Posted: 19 Oct 2004 12:15 PM PDT

Ken

Have you considered using the Contracts part of MSCRM for this
purpose? Make one contract for each customer and have one contract
line for each product they have installed.

I have seen a roadmap for MSCRM stating that version 2 will have a
field service module. I would sense to have some sort of asset
tracking in such a module, so we can always hope :-)

Deployment Manager Snap-in Failed

Posted: 19 Oct 2004 09:26 AM PDT

Actually, you do not need to be a Domain Admin to run it, you need to be a CRM
Admin. The local user account wouldn't be defined to CRM as a user, nor would
it have alicense associated wtih it. CRM requires both in order to run
Deployment Manager, as well as having the appropriate Role in CRM.

Also, if you have moved the user from one BU to another you will probably
need to go back in and verify the roles. (I also check to make sure
licensing looks correct, but that's just me...)

normally if the toolbar does not appear its because the file crmaddin.dll

to correct the problem. I have no idea why it becomes unregistered

Importing from Maximizer to MSCRM

Posted: 18 Oct 2004 02:27 PM PDT

Im currently implementing this using the migration framework. We use
Maximizer Enterprise 7, which uses a SQL Server 2000 backend. Some things
are a real pain and can take a long time to implement, for example all emails
that are stored in Maximizer are stored as "Structured Documents" which is
the same format that Excel and Word uses. So I've got a few custom
applications I've written to extract these files, and massage them to turn
them into Activities in Microsoft CRM. I also have the integrators toolkit
for Maximizer, so if you have trouble finding some data you want to migrate,
let me know.
If you need a hand, or just want a starting point, give me a yell - Happy to
share

Cameron
