Dalya,

Thanks for the best wishes.

My goal is stable file tagging that is consistently transportable between sync'd computers. That just isn't possible with Spotlight Comments or any other method that I know of. I'm just trying to add Office 2004 files to my portfolio of file types I can reliably tag with this method.

Thanks.

I hate to mention it, but it could take an "Archive & Install" of the OS to
fix it. I did this recently, and the only thing I had to re-install was my
Microsoft keyboard software.

"Archive and Install" moves existing system files to a folder named Previous
System and then installs Mac OS X again.

Just be sure to check Preserve Users and Network Settings when you select
Archive & Install.

You might repost the question in the Excel dedicated group. Also search
here:

and download the Excel 2004 AppleScript Reference and search that--it
may have more samples than the Migration Guide and might turn up a way

Bob, Thanks for making your suggestions. I have actually tried all of this: I've reinstalled Office 2008, installed all three updates, gone to disk utility to run permissions repair, restarted the computer- and still get only a gray screen when I try to insert clip art or to to the insert objects palette in the toolbox. I really don't know what else to do. I have a long term Mac consultant who is going to look at it for me on Monday. I'll let you know what he discovers.

Can't tell too awfully much without knowing specifics of OS X & Office

versions as well as in which program(s) this occurs, but in general...

Make sure OS X & Office are update to the current levels, run disk Utility
- Repair Disk Permissions & restart your Mac. If that doesn't resolve
it post back with complete descriptive details.

Also, what happens if you use the ClipArt mode of the Insert Objects palette

Standard to Enterprise upgrade

Posted: 10 Jun 2005 06:54 AM PDT

Doesn't get much easier, hey? One more question - does the move from
standard to enterprise constitute an 'upgrade' in that you are still using
the license from the standard or is it such that the purchase of the
Enterprise Server media constitute a seperate purchase allowing for the
installation of the original Standard version on another seperate server thus
allowing you to have two seperate Exchange organizations?

For message sizes, place the maximum upper limit at the "global" level
and the smaller limits on the individual objects that are the
exception to those limits. You can only increase the individual
upper-limits to equal the size of the global limit.

For mailbox sizes, place the general limit on the database (and, if
you have many of those, apply the limits in a policy). Make exemptions
at the individual mailboxes. Here you can exceed the default limit you
set in the database properties.

I wouldn't set limits on the indivual mailboxes for the receive sizes,
just the send sizes.

Why not? If the other users need them to accomplish their jobs they
should be able to receive them. But that brings up the question of why
one internal user would use e-mail to share a file of that size with
another internal user. A file share, ftp server, web site, or
sharepoint server would be a lot better for this.

There are probably commercial tools that would provision your users

Okay. This is what I did.

I went to another user and sent the new user an e-mail. When I look in the

Can't change default window size of word documents

Posted: 04 Oct 2013 02:42 PM PDT

Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!!

When I open a NEW Word document - even if I already have one open - the size of the Word window won't change. Windows used to copy your last window size. I miss that!

This is not about page sizing - it is about how the window appears on my desktop. I just bought a computer (October 2013) and am sussing out Windows 8 with no small degree of annoyance. I just now purchased Microsoft Office 2010. And I'm taking too much Excedrin today!

Is it hopeless? Can I change the default window size for documents? And I'm going to guess it will be the same for Excel and PowerPoint. Come to think of it, the Internet windows are the same. I like to stretch these things from top to bottom of the screen and take up .5 to .75 of the screen with each. It is how I work. But EVERY kind of window I open does not go to the bottom of the screen, so I'm not sure if this is a Windows 8 thing or both that AND Office.

I have created a new template for our documentation at work with all new styles. We are in the process of coping and pasting our older documents into the new template. After about 5 hours of working on a document both files lock up. I am trying to figure out if this is a symptom of the new template or just the amount of time we are spending coping and pasting between the 2 documents. Time working on the document without closing is the only variable that the 3 people working on this seem to have in common. I have checked all the options and they are the same on both documents. I also have the options set so that the new document does not allow any formatting to come over from the old document. I have the auto save set at 10 minutes and are making sure the people save as often as they can. Has anyone ever had this problem or am I on the right track as far as time working on the document. I am about ready to go live to the general work force with this but don't want to until I am sure this is not a bigger problem than just closing out the document every couple of hours.

Thank you in advance for any advice you may have.

How to Keep Parent/Child Hierarchy in Two-Column TOC

Posted: 04 Oct 2013 11:14 AM PDT

I have a two-column table of contents that shows two levels of the heading hierarchy (Heading 1 and Heading 2). Word wants to make both TOC columns the same length regardless of whether there is a parent element at the bottom of the left column that has an indented child element at the top of the right column.

When I backspace the child element from the top of the right column to bring it back under the parent at the bottom of the left column, Word inserts the child immediately to the right of the parent in the left column--not below it. Word also puts the dot leader for the child on a line by itself in the left column below the line containing the parent, parent page number, and child headings. If I press ENTER to try to push the child below the parent in the left column, Word pushes the child element right back to the top of the right column.

Is there a manual step that allows me to keep child TOC elements with their parents when they appear by themselves at the top of the second column?

vb Message Box code differences between Word 2003 and Word 2010

Posted: 04 Oct 2013 10:19 AM PDT

I have various small Message Box snippets that I used in Word 2003 stored.... As written (simply) in 2003, they work fine in the Word 2010 environment where the form still uses 'form fields' w_protection, however, I tried tweaking the wording for a new project in Word 2010 and while the Message box appears, the text in the code is not there?  What do I not understand in the new world order?

Sample:  2003 code to unlock a protected Word form.

Sub UnprotectDocument()

   ActiveDocument.Unprotect Password:="password"

MsgBox "The document is now unlocked."

End Sub

I use this short macro to unlock the forms I work on to update or make changes...  Now, I wish to allow our users to access MailMerge and still maintain document protection upon completion of the mail merge. I want/need to keep things as simple as possible and I have seen some sample macros by Microsoft and MVPs, but they are way to involved... I wisyh to Unlock the document to allow users to set the file up for and run a mail merge.  Once completed, and the user closes the file.... I have added an AutoClose macro to re-lock the file   I set up the following in a Word 2010 document:

Sample:  2010 code to unlock a protected Word form (read-only) format

Sub MailMerge()

  ActiveDocument.Unprotect Password:="password"

  MsgBox "Initiate Mail Merge Setup."

End Sub

Only difference is the 'message' itself.  When I click on the button I placed in the QAT for this purpose, the Box appears but the 'text' is missing.  What's wrong?

Additional question, and it may be the crux of the matter... I am migrating many of the company's forms to a read-only format w_protection.  This is allowing the user to access almost all of the programs functions (except track changes, mail merge and compare so far, there may be more, but for our employees use, they can access the functionality they need.)  I have noticed that my 'unlock' button (from 2003) does not work or hangs and I have to click on the 'Stop protection' button, and type in the password.  I have to do the same when re-locking as my '2003 re-protect' button does not work.  There must be some difference in the read-only and form field protection.....

Any clarification or direction to such information would be greatly appreciated.

Regards Lenny33

Show My Templates as default when choosing File, New command

Posted: 04 Oct 2013 09:26 AM PDT

When I choose the File, New command, Word 2010 displays the Available Templates of which there are a multitude. Each time, I have to click on My Templates to choose the template I wish to use.

Is there a way of displaying the contents of My Templates by default? I realise it's only one extra double-click but I never use any of the other options because I have all my templates already set up so it's annoying that I have to wade through all the superfluous options. I never use the Office.com templates so I don't need to see them.

Many thanks.

How to print showing the balloons in Track Changes/Word 2010

Posted: 04 Oct 2013 09:08 AM PDT

I hope someone call help me!  I am using Word 2010 and I have my Track Changes set to show the revisions in balloons.  However, when I go to print, the printed document DOES NOT show the balloons!  I have done a lot of searching on the internet and found somewhere where someone else was having that same problem and the forum they posted on (I don't remember where it was, but it wasn't here) didn't have an answer.  The very strange thing is if you change the size of the document to "legal" (instead of what it should be, which is "letter"), then it DOES show the revisions in the balloons off to the side.  Also, while playing around with it yesterday, I finally DID get it to print correctly showing the balloons, but now it is back to NOT showing the balloons.  Can someone please help me????  This is very very strange and I'm thinking it may be a glitch in Word 2010.

I've gone to Word/Options/Add-Ins expecting to find three instances of ProfileInfo, and after looking at all menu items, I only see one instances, which is what I expect to see.

Dilemma is this:  How can I get rid of the Add-Ins tab when it won't allow me to.

Within the table I have set the value for TelephoneID to =[ContactDetail_Telephone]![TelephoneNumber].
ContactDetail.ID is linked to ContactDetail_Telephone.fkContactID (many)

How can I do this?

Opening new Word file restores other Word files

Hello,

Please help. This problem stopped happening when I upgraded to MS Office 2007, but it is happening again.

I usually have multiple word documents open. Say I minimize one, or one gets buried under other windows, as often happens.

If I open a new document, the last MS Word file that I touched will restore to the top before the new file opens.

This messes up the order of the windows, and restores files I have minimized for a reason. It is very frustrating. I am using Windows7 Professional.

Thank you for your help

Word 2013 Communicating with Server 2003

Posted: 04 Oct 2013 02:41 AM PDT

Hello everyone,

I'm running an application on my local machine (Win 7 Pro 64) and have recently installed Office 2013.

The application is a case management system that lives on Windows Server 2003.

I guess when it auto generates documents, the server and my machine communicate to open up Word with the content already filled.

However, Word doesn't open at all.

Is there an issue communicating between Office 2013 on my machine and the server?

Thanks,

Main index entries repeating

Posted: 03 Oct 2013 04:19 PM PDT

I have a lengthy index. Most of it is fine. A couple sections are repeating the main entry above each sub-entry. To trouble shoot the problem, I created an simple index entry in a different color, basic body text style, and pasted it on four different pages. Four page numbers should have come up (in red) for the main and identical subheadings. Instead, I have four separate entries.

I am posting my problem under Dydoria's question because I hoped by pursuing how to do it, I could undo it.

What I discovered is the problematic index sections are listing by page number rather than alphabetically. There is no code in the entry to define that. If there could be a hidden code or keystroke somewhere else in the document, I need to know what it is so I can look for it and eliminate it.

By the way, these sections worked once, then went haywire as described above.

"reinstall" or "find somebody capable who can decide what you think is
'wrong' and fix it in five minutes".

Hey, I'm still on potato! I have no difficulty installing anything -
I serve as the boat anchor telling package maintainers not to up their
dependency requirement statements for no flipping reason.

Yes but no: information which is interesting for Sun/Oracle is the
current version you are using. As far as I understand the process, that
is not the user who is registered each time, it is the user who
registers his version of OpenOffice.org or OOo-Dev (Developer version).

I'm quite happy with an iPod touch which is essentially an iphone with no phone. There are two things that make precision on that tiny screen work. First when the placement of an i-beem cursor is needed you get your finger near the word and a magnifying glass opens just above or beside your finger letting you easily place the i-been between two letters. Second is the keyboard works along the long axis of the screen. (Turn the device from portrait to landscape and the image turns to follow.) When you press a letter of course your finger covers a couple of the keys but the key you are pressing is enlarged and appears clearly off to the side of your finger. The iPad also has a doc and with the dock supports a full size keyboard. They both also support bluetooth and so I assume bluetooth keyboard and mouse support is possible although I have never checked to see if it is.

Malte, it sounds vaguely like the ability CSS has to provide different

Using medium-specific style sheets would allow what Mauro had proposed,
that PDF (paper) have one style and that the WWW have another.

I hope that it is remembered that the Web is not paper and that while an
author or web designer can recommend specific layouts and appearances,
they should do their best to allow the page to be viewed under any
circumstances that the user may choose instead. That includes not just
typefaces but also other measurements including aspect ratios. So in
the link above, the examples give in 7.2.1 are *poor* examples in that
they use fixed measurements (i.e. px and pt) rather than relative
measurements.

Hello Jonathon,

Well, Last time I tried (using some OO.o dev build, don;t recall
which) under 64bit Linux, it would hang without ever getting to the
first dialog.

Today I downloaded a new copy of odt2Daisy 2.1 and installed it with
OO.o 3.2 and dev 3.2.1m_16 under 32 bit Vista.

I've started a conversation on the documentation mailing list and
would like to use one list if possible, sounds like you have some
experience here and I appreciated your input.

Also, will be using the wiki to keep track of things as I go:

There are two different situations for emailing from OOo.

1) For emailing from the Mail Merge program, you need to set it up
using Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org Writer > Mail Merge Email.
This needs Name, E-mail Address and details of the outgoing SMTP
server (mine is smtp.freeserve.net, for instance). You should get
SMTP server details from your ISP. If you don't use an ISP as such
(for instance, if you use mobile broadband), you will find instructions
for setting up GMail's SMTP at

http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13287

This set up is the same for both Windows XP and Linux versions of
OOo

2) For using File > Send > Document as Email/Email as... options,
the rules are different for Windows XP and Linux.

In Windows XP, OOo finds out what to do from your Windows
settings (Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs tab > E-mail).
This is a problem if you only use Gmail web mail as you will not see it
in the drop-down list of email clients, however you can configure an
email client on your Windows XP machine to use GMail's SMTP (see
link above).

In Linux you configure OOo for send > Document as Email/Email
as... options by using Tools > Options > Internet > Email and
specifying your E-mail program. On my EEEPC running Ubuntu, this
program is set by default to sensible-ooomua (which sends mail using
Evolution). As for XP, there is probably nothing you can do for web
mail. You have to configure an email client on your machine to send
using GMails SMTP.

Hope this all helps.

By the way, someone mentioned Pegasus mail. This is a free
Windows mailer (which I happen to use). The OOo Send >
Document as Email/Email as... options sort of work with Pegasus, but
you must first enable the Pegasus MAPI program. Then it does work
but you always seem to have to crash out of OOo.

Hi Sarah, Johnathon

Johnathon is correct, although he did make a small typo there.

You will find a version of OpenOffice.org that will read word files at
http://go-oo.org/download

The OxygenOffice package that Johnathon mentions is also based
on the code from http://go-oo.org however is not quite as current,
(for example they are currently one full release cycle behind, and
about to be two) it does however offer many extras, in the way
of clip-art and templates.

Best wishes,

Drew
