Default filenames in Word 2013 Posted: 25 Sep 2014 01:59 PM PDT Hi, In previous versions of Word, when I saved a document for the first time, Word automatically created a default filename using the first few words in the document. This is not happening in Word 2013; when I save a new document (either in Save or Save As) the document name invariably shows up as Document1 and I have to type in the name of the document. This is time-consuming and somewhat annoying. I work as a translator, and many of my document titles are long and complex. Since I can't see the document itself when the Save As window is open, I have to write down the title on a piece of paper and type it in from there. There must be a better way! I'd appreciate any hints anyone can give me. Thanks! |
Posted: 25 Sep 2014 01:09 PM PDT Trying to load my office program, I own the package deal for students on PC with word, excel, powerpoint, etc.. I clicked the short cut and the original link for it on my homescreen, and all are saying the following, "Oops something went wrong, Please try starting it again. " and that has gotten me here. Help would be appreciated. |
Table and Figure caption numbers do not follow Chapter number Posted: 25 Sep 2014 12:56 PM PDT Hello All, I have a large Word 2010 document. I have tables and figures with captions everywhere. Up to Section 4 everything is fine. In section 5, the section number is correct, but any figure I add there has a caption identical to another figure in section 4 (4.4.8-1). If I indent the Header 5 two levels so it gets the number 5.1.1, only then the figure or table caption gets the correct number (i.e. 5.1.1-1). Please help! Thank you. Fabián |

Image "In Line with Text" Not Lining Up or Showing Up Posted: 25 Sep 2014 10:20 AM PDT I am having an issue with some of my Word 2010 documents. I am able to insert an image, but I am only able to see a small line of the bottom of the image. I do not have Show Image Placeholders enabled and have compared options with another document that does not have this problem. It seems that despite the fact that the image is set to wrap "In Line w/ Text" it is not lining up with the text. It is appears to be anchoring at the bottom left corner of the image instead of the top left and then hiding anything above the line it is placed on. On other documents, when I insert an image, the image "begins" at the where I insert it and then adjusts the text around it accordingly. Please help me as my co-workers and I insert images in many documents and can't figure out why this occasionally happens. I have attached a screen shot. Thank you! |

Applying word and excel 2013 control id's through the windows registry Posted: 25 Sep 2014 09:44 AM PDT Hi, I'm unable to apply custom word and excel 2013 control id's directly through the windows registry. They get applied to the correct location where existing control id's have been inputted manually but are not visible within word and excel group policies in AD. The reason why I am looking to apply these control id's is in order to not manually insert each id through group policy to disable items in the user interface. I would like to apply a few hundred in order to lock down word and excel for our restricted users. Has anyone been able to apply these through a registry key for office 2013? Alternatively does anyone know of a better way to automate this process? http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179143(v=office.15).aspx

PRESERVE AUTOCORRECT ENTRY IN WORD 2013 PREFORMATTING OS. Posted: 25 Sep 2014 09:23 AM PDT Sir / Madam,
Pl. enlighten whether AUTOCORRECT entries created in MS Word 2013 is preserved after formatting OS. If yes, then what is the location? if not, how to preserve them before formatting windows? Because it is very much tedious and time consuming to remake them.

Combo Box Content Control - when filled out, text disappears Posted: 25 Sep 2014 09:10 AM PDT I have a form that uses content controls. I am copying and pasting information into it from an older version. However, I am selecting a drop-down choice and typing in a combo box. After PDFing the document, the combo box text that I selected and typed disappears. Has anyone come across this in Word 2010? Very frustrating! |

Content Copied from PDF Bypasses Word's Spellcheck Posted: 25 Sep 2014 08:29 AM PDT Hello, I am using Office 365 University Edition on Windows 7 OS. Within a document there was a misspelled Word that was not red underlined by Word. As I was troubleshooting with a technician we can to the conclusion that text within a Word document originated from a copy and paste from a PDF bypasses Word's spell checker since a PDF file is essentially an image of the document converted. Additionally, if that same misspelled word was manually typed into another paragraph (still misspelled) within the same Word document, Word would not red underline that instance either. If I was to copy the misspelled word into Notepad (presumably to remove all formatting) and paste it back into the same document, Word still would not red underline the misspelled word. However, if I was to copy that selection into notepad and then copy and paste it back into a fresh Word document, Word would function as normal and flag the misspelled Word. It appears to me that by copying content from a PDF and pasting it into a document, the PDF content overrides the ENTIRE document's ability to accurately spellcheck. The word in question was "workth"; a misspelling of the word "worth". Default language for my OS and for Word is set to English. It is my hope that a solution to this is possible and viable and would be addressed in future updates or editions of Word. Thank you. |

Publishing to PDF from Word 2010 prints empty fields connected to custom properties as boxes Posted: 25 Sep 2014 05:32 AM PDT I have a .docx file that has many predefined custom Properties that are empty. No value at all. All of these are displayed in Fields in the document header, footer and body. As a Word file it looks perfect, but when i Save As... PDF, the result shows all empty custom properties as a small box, kind of like a check Box. All other custom properties With actual values, are displayed perfectly, and if i put a space as value in the custom Properties that fails, it's working fine when i publish to PDF again. So it appears that converting to PDF can't handle emtpy values in Fields linked to a custom property. Well, wrong. Because this is a problem only some times. Here is a link to a sample, all the boxes should not be displayed. Anyone know why it's like this, and can offer a solution? |
Error codes 30088-8 and 1058-4 Posted: 25 Sep 2014 05:11 AM PDT My Word 2013 stopped working. I couldn't find an answer looking through these forums. Couldn't even uninstall it. Extremely exasperating! When executing the program I received the error message 'Something went wrong'. Gee that's a lot of help. Well anyway, what solved my problem was to set the 'Microsoft Office ClickToRunService' service to Automatic!!! I hope this helps some people with similar problems. |
'String too long' macro error: how to implement a workaround? Posted: 25 Sep 2014 04:57 AM PDT Hello, I have been creating a large number of forms in Word 2010. I'm using form fields within tables, and then applying 'Restrict Editing' to limit user interaction to 'Filling in forms'. This works fine most of the time, but some of the forms request lists of discrete items of information (for example, the names of people working in an organisation). Since there is no way of knowing how many form fields any given user will need in order to provide this information, the form has to allow them to add rows, containing form fields, to the table. After a lot of Googling, I found a macro that enables the user to do this in a protected form (http://www.gmayor.com/word_vba_examples_2.htm): Sub AddRow()
This is exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately, I have now discovered that if the form field contains more than 256 characters (which for some of my forms it will do), the macro returns the error message 'String too long' After some more investigation, I found that this error has long been a problem in Word VBA. The workaround most often referred to seems to be the one at http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/MacrosVBA/SetLongFmFldResult.htm My problem is that I am clueless when it comes to VBA. I know just enough to install a macro and set it to execute, but that's it. Could anyone possibly tell me how to implement this workaround in the macro I'm using? Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Neil |
I can 'find' a space right after a paragraph break, but not 'find and replace' them! Why? Posted: 25 Sep 2014 03:23 AM PDT I've tried searching for ^p^w among other things - but though it is found, I can't replace with just ^p. Help! Many thanks in advance everyone! |
Crash. Dump. Burn. (When Office crashes, it leaves a dump file while deleting the original) Posted: 25 Sep 2014 03:17 AM PDT After installing, the most recent rounds of updates Office 2010 seem to be acting up. Although the trigger event has yet to be identified, here is a painful symptom description. So, while working in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc., each application creates a temporary working file. Of all the past years I have been using these applications, should an error occur the original file and the temporary file would be accessible. However, there is a new alarming trend. Now any Microsoft Office 2010 application, when it experiences an error or crash, has a working temporary file but now deletes the original file. This can be more than just a little problematic, especially when working with original files and they just go poof. |

How to see size (resolution) of images in Word 2010 doc? Posted: 25 Sep 2014 01:16 AM PDT I have a Word 2010 doc with images from various sources. Some images are low resolution and need to be replaced. Once an image is in the doc, is there a quick way to determine its resolution? Something like properties? I can only find formatting and positioning commands. Thanks, this is new territory for me. |
Beginning a document in Office Word 2007, I'd like to have a "3 letter ident to EVERY paragraph." Posted: 25 Sep 2014 01:14 AM PDT I got confused when I read all the responses on how to indent the first line of paragraphs to the same place throughout an entire doc.. Whenever I type a personal letter, or condense a document (doc) for personal use, I always type the first body-line with a 3-letter indent, like herein, (instead of the usual 5-letter indent). I've been doing it by hitting the Space Bar. I would like to have it done automatically throughout the entire document instead. Upon starting a doc, I was hitting the Tab on the keyboard, but it indented too far (to where those little lines below the white part of the ruler are). Most of the time, to save paper, I pull the thing which sets the margin of the paper to the left (though the white bar part of the ruler doesn't move), then moved the top little triangle ("1st line indent") to where the 3rd letter will be, and begin typing. How can I do this automatically for the entire document? Mike |

Office 2013 programs crash when following link that is redirected to other protocol Posted: 25 Sep 2014 12:26 AM PDT It seems like some recent update to Office 2013 causes the programs to crash with a null reference exception in mso.dll when following a link that is redirected (http response 301) to some other protocol than http/https. For instance, if the link is redirected to about:blank, then Word, Excel and PowerPoint will crash. We've set up a very basic test server that simply redirects to about:blank https://www.macrobond.com/r/about.php Add this link to a Word 2013 document and then ctrl+click to follow the link. The same problem can be reproduced by redirecting to other protocols, such as telnet: I have installed all updates for both Office and Windows 8.1 available until now (25 Sept 2014). We had an older machine that was not updated with fixes from WIndows Update for several months. The links worked on that computer until we installed all updates. Unfortunately we have not been able to pinpoint what update that causes this issue. Can you also reproduce this? Any ideas? /Thomas O |
How to stop Word 2010 document spreading across two monitors Posted: 24 Sep 2014 08:52 PM PDT I started using a second monitor two months ago so that I can go back and forth quickly between two or more Word 2010 documents. The only hiccup has been a frequent tendency for a file to suddenly and spontaneously spread across both monitors, forcing me to drag the right side back so that it is contained within one monitor. The same file will subsequently re-spread at some point (sometimes when I open a new document), forcing me to again drag back. Is there any way to stop this happening? |
Spacing between words is missing after I reopened to begin editing Posted: 24 Sep 2014 05:27 PM PDT Hi! I have been editing a document and opened it to finish, and the previous chapters were missing spacing in between words. They look like spacingismissing in betweenwords. Please help. I had this once with two different versions of word. It was on my end and not on theirs. So I had them save their docs as a 97=03 version and resend, and they disappeared. I'm thinking it's once again related? |
Microsoft Word 2010 -bug in number of copies command in the Print menu Posted: 24 Sep 2014 04:56 PM PDT When I advise the number of copies required for printing my Microsoft Word 2010 does not recognise such and defaults all the time to a single copy. I have to then have to go through the continuing cycle of telling it to print until I get the number of copies I need. Can I correct this bug in any way as it is at present very time consuming and somewhat annoying to keep repeating the process? |

The system says that I don't have access to the temp internet folder??? I tried the following from Microsoft: Method 1 Change the location for the Temporary Internet Files folder for Internet Explorer. To do this, follow these steps: 1.In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu. 6.Click OK to close the open dialog boxes. Found no "Temporary Internet Files" folder in the above-noted location. I also tried "regedit" fix. The location of the folder "cache" is fine. Any suggestions to fix this annoying problem.
