Blue check mark showing for task with Remaining Work hours Posted: 22 Mar 2005 10:53 AM PST Hi Blake 20, If you read the FAQ you will see that for questions relating to problems with Project being used on a server, the correct newsgroup where the experts hang out is the microsoft.public.project.server newsgroup. Try posting your query there. Mike Glen Project MVP Blake 20 wrote: |
Posted: 22 Mar 2005 09:29 AM PST There is an update needed field which will apparently identify if there is a change made to a task or resource. It needs the project tasks to be set up with Teamassign etc under workgroups. I have never used this feature ,yself, but it looks promising. "cb1173" wrote: |
can project fill in actual work for the future in resource usage v Posted: 22 Mar 2005 06:05 AM PST No I've have not read Mike Glen's series of tutorials yet, but it is on my list to do so. "JulieD" wrote: |
The Project Server Database is unavailable Posted: 22 Mar 2005 05:43 AM PST Pandian, you get this error when you log into Project Professional without having Project Manager rights to access Project Professional. Check your rights for the resource you are using to log into in PWA "pandian" wrote: |
Posted: 21 Mar 2005 05:11 PM PST Hi Doniy, You can't use Outlook for newsgroups, you need a newsgroup reader. I use Outlook Express which is provided free with Windows. If you wish to use that, I'll give you the steps necessary for setting up an account. Mike Glen Project MVP doniy wrote: |
Posted: 21 Mar 2005 04:09 PM PST In article <com>, "jonniec" <microsoft.com> wrote: janniec, Are you expecting problems? Granted, new releases of applications quite often have their share of glitches but there have been 3 versions of Project released since 98 (not counting the Professional and Server versions). Everything basically works the same except for added features. Depending on your needs you may or may not want to upgrade to the latest version (2003). I personally find that 2000 has everything I need, is very stable, and can read files created with alter versions. Using Project 98 to read files created in later versions can be a problem. The best bet is to upgrade although if the user who creates the newer file saves it in Project 98 format you should be able to open it. Keep in mind though that new features added in later versions will not be accessible in Project 98. Hope this helps. John Project MVP |

Posted: 21 Mar 2005 12:41 PM PST In article <googlegroups.com>, net wrote: Ned, Thanks for the more thorough explanation but I'm still confused. You say that John and Mary are subprojects. I guess it is possible (but highly irregular) to use a person's name for the file name (maybe it's a code name or something). However reading further, your post talks about John participating in some of Mary's tasks. How can a file (subproject) participate in anything? I suspect that John and Mary are the CAMs (cost account managers) for two of the subprojects in your master file. In addition John and Mary may be resources assigned to one or more tasks within the file along with other resources. People manage or perform tasks. Subprojects and files are collection of tasks describing the effort necessary to achieve an overall plan or goal. Tasks are the detail effort, ideally expressed with action verbs, to accomplish the plan. Resources (labor or material) are assigned to tasks to actually perform (or be used in) the tasks. Now with regard to links between subproject tasks in a master file. External links should be used between tasks in different subproject files when there is indeed a true dependency. Through the link, dependent tasks within one file will update information to the other file. That is all pretty straightforward. What I don't understand is why any kind of copy/paste is necessary. Something is getting lost in translation. If a task in John (or Mary's) file is NOT linked to a task in the other file, why would you expect an update in one file to change something in the other file? There is no interaction! I'd be glad to offer alternate solutions if I fully understood the file structure and had a good idea of what you are really trying to do. Until then, I'm lost. John Project MVP |
Posted: 21 Mar 2005 11:37 AM PST Hi Judy, Had this question several times before. A silmilar transformation (turning Calendar holidays into fixed date tasks) can be done by a macro you will find on my website (see address below - "English - Microsoft Project - Article"). It may inspire a VBA man to write what your boss wants. how do I specify a cost rate that is not by hour but lump sum? Posted: 21 Mar 2005 11:37 AM PST just to add to Mike's reply - you'll need to be in the Gantt chart view rather than the Resource Sheet to see the Fixed Cost column. Posted: 21 Mar 2005 10:55 AM PST You can also easily output your Gantts to gif files and stick them on web pages or just post them somewhere as graphics. This can be automated via macros if you like. Dave John wrote: gantt much better. |

Posted: 21 Mar 2005 09:41 AM PST In article <com>, "David" <microsoft.com> wrote: David, Strange. The next thing I would try is to take the "non-working" file and saving it under a new name so it can be used as a test bed. First check to see that the new file still "fails" when attempting to use the Compare Projects utility. Once you have a test file, try paring it down, perhaps by deleting half the tasks and see if "size matters". If you can still see the problem with a smaller file it may be easier to troubleshoot, although a few months ago another user sent me a file that was about 5 lines total and it failed when we tried to run the compare. Unfortunately we never did find a suitable answer to his problem. Keep me posted. John |
