Posted: 12 Apr 2005 02:11 AM PDT mjt wrote: I did check the BIOS, all looked fine. I then booted from an old Win95 floppy and ran fdisk. Here something weird occured. FDisk saw my winxp disk (master, hda) as disk 2, and the Fedora disk (slave, hdb) as disk 1. So, I shut the machine down, disconnected the hdb disk completely, booted with the floppy and did a fdisk /mbr. Now the comp boots XP fine again, and I have to start all over with Fedora, but that I just have to accept, I fucked up so I guess that is my punishment :-) Thanks for your input. What do you mean with the "followup set" ? /ZW |

How do I config the X server in slackware 10.1? Posted: 11 Apr 2005 06:02 AM PDT On Mon, 11 Apr 2005 06:03:28 -0700, Boltar wrote: log in as root, run 'Xorg -configure' to create a file called xorg.conf.new in the current directory, then rename that file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf It should auto-detect everything if you're using a modern display card and monitor. Log back out and relogin as whatever user account you'll primarily be using (it's a bad idea to do everything as root!), then just run startx as normal to fire up the windowing system. At least that's what I ended up doing yesterday when I installed slack 10.1 - startx worked with the default installed xorg.conf, but only at a low resolution and it messed up the graphics hardware when dropping back to text console. (From a text shell 'man Xorg' will give you the manual page for Xorg; 'useradd -m xxxx' will create a user called xxxx and necessary home directory in case you didn't know that bit - see 'man useradd') cheers Jules |
Python 2.4.1 install broke RedHat 9 printconf-backend Posted: 10 Apr 2005 04:49 PM PDT BrianS wrote: Not exactly. xml.utils is part of the XML processing package PyXML - you don't get it in the cut-down XML stuff available in the standard library. You could try downloading and installing from http://pyxml.sf.net/. Though I can't guarantee there won't be other problems as RedHat can be very annoying like this. You might have to keep Python 2.2 around in addition to 2.4 for RH's benefit; in any case trying to remove 2.2 will probably lead you into an RPM dependency nightmare. -- Andrew Clover mailto:com http://www.doxdesk.com/ |

Kernel panic with multi boot system Posted: 09 Apr 2005 07:03 AM PDT imotgm wrote: labled rw, Hi, The rw flag for Xandros is what was present in the lilo config file of the Xandros distribution (and I tried to pass to grub the same params). I remember I tried also with ro but it didnt work. I want to try again, to fiddle with it a bit, but I guess I'm gonna first create a dummy, do-nothing lilo to make sure that if it boots in Xandros, it wont change my mbr automatically to install the Xandros (lilo) boot loader. Keep you posted, Thank you for help, Don |
Posted: 09 Apr 2005 12:32 AM PDT Doug Laidlaw wrote: The problem above must have been somewhere in GkrellM's config file, because it came back when I copied the old config across. I just learned the wisdom of not reinstalling everything. This morning, I could connect to the Web from Windows but not from Linux. I couldn't even connect to my modem, but the eth0 setup was working. (That was what really put me on the track.) I has installed Shorewall but hadn't configured it yet. I had rebooted in the meantime. It was running and blocking everything. Doug. -- ICQ Number 178748389. Registered Linux User No. 277548.
