Page numbers aren't updating

Posted: 07 Dec 2012 05:17 AM PST

I have a document that contains a table of contents, header, and page numbers. Currently it is at 10 pages, and when I am on the 10th page, the numbering shows "Page 10 of 10". When I type/Ctrl+Enter to a new page, it shows "Page 11 of 10". There is a page after page 10 that is not part of the numbering, however (section break, I believe), so could that be the problem? Is there a way to fix this?

Static row heights in Word Tables

How to know number of lines in a selected text, not part of a table.

Posted: 07 Dec 2012 02:31 AM PST

Is there some way of finding starting line number and ending line number of a selection that is not in a table, or at least the number of lines in that selection.
I used Selection.Information(wdFirstCharacterLineNumber) to get the starting line number, but how to get the ending line number?
Even if we can find the number of lines selected, I can add it to the starting line number to get the ending line number.
I can't use Selection.Information(wdEndOfRangeRowNumber) as it works only for tables (it seems).

Works DB not showing many records for a mailmerge. Why?

Posted: 06 Dec 2012 12:43 PM PST

sorry guys - I'm near end of my tether . . I'm trying to do my annual/Christmas address labels and it's seldom troublefree. This year, my underlying data source, a Works database, is showing only a small portion of my 170 records. I've not had this problem before so I'm wondering whether it might be due, as administrator, to recently setting up a password/keeping files 'private' or perhaps because not all records have data in all fields or my .wdb file is corrupt. Any ideas will be appreciated.  I am using XP and preferably Word 2005.

Client unable to edit excel spreadsheet object

Posted: 06 Dec 2012 11:18 AM PST

Hello,

I've been asked to make a word document that includes an excel spreadsheet object for a client, but he's having issues trying to edit the object.

I've successfully managed to create the document including the object, and I'm able to edit it myself perfectly fine. But after I sent it over to the client he says he's unable to do so himself, saying he gets a message saying he doesn't have excel installed (He does have excel installed).

The error code is the following:

"The program used to create this object is Excel.  That program is not installed on your computer. To edit this object, you must install a program that can open the object."

I've come to understand that it's a problem on his side because of the following:
  1. I've asked him to shut down all office programs he was using
  2. I then asked him to open up WORD
  3. I then asked him to create an excel spreadsheet object
  4. I asked him if he was able to edit this object, to which he replied he was able to.
  5. I then asked him to save the document, and exit word completely.
  6. I then asked him to start up word again, and load up the document to see if he was then able to edit the object, to which he replied he was not able anymore.
Would anyone know why this could be happening and possibly a way to fix this for him?

Kind regards and thanks in advanced,

Michael.

Using MS Word 2007 to print Christmas card labels. Made the Excel Spreadsheet last year and printed labels just fine. Follow the same process this year and cannot get anything to print.

Posted: 06 Dec 2012 08:34 AM PST

I know the correct spreadsheet is in there because if I go to Edit Recipient List, the correct ones are there. So I make the final step, click "Merge and Finish", and then ask it to print. Only get blank sheets and it thinks each address is a separate page so it tries to pring 30 blank pages.

Formating Table Location in a Numbered List

Posted: 06 Dec 2012 07:47 AM PST

I would like to insert a table after the 4th item in a numbered list and have the 5th item in the numbered list appear after the table in a uniform looking way (text in the numbered items equidistant from the table at the top and bottom).  How can I format the table/list to achieve this?

problem with text box converting word 2007 to pdf

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 12:24 PM PST

I converted a document from Word 2007 using Adobe Acrobat 9. The document converts but when I look at one of the pages that had 2 pictures on it, only one picture remains on that page.  That particular page has 2 pictures within one text box.

I went back to Word 2003 using Adobe Acrobat 9 and converted the document to pdf from Word 2003 and the document converts correctly with the 2 pictures on the page.

Is 2007 textbox NOT compatible with Word 2003 textbox?

I know a solution probable would be to just put the picture in two separate text boxes but that is not the answer to my question. If I had not double check the pdf file, I never would have known that this was an issue converting text boxes and my document would have gone out minus one picture. Everything else convertted fine.

Thank you for any response.

How do I update cross references in footnotes?

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 09:40 AM PST

Hello,

I have several footnotes in Word that include cross-references to other chapters (numbered items). I know that usually I have to right click on cross references to update them, but this doesn't seem to work in footnotes? When I right click it just doesn't show "update field" as it does when i right click on cross-references in normal test.

Does anyone have a solution to this Problem?

Thanks, Michael

securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically
and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect,
which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data

What you can do is just burn this CD (or make a floppy image) for the person
who is doing bulk drive wiping and have him connect only the drives he
wishes to have thoroughly wiped to the computer this distribution is booted
on and he can just boot DBAN and hit enter and choose the wipe options and
it does a thorough multi-pass wipe of every single bit of the hard drive.

I think his instructions are too specific. For one thing, I don't
think /etc/rc.sysinit gets run on my system. The reason I say that is
because when I modify /etc/rc.sysinit, I'm still able to use my
system. When make the modifications to /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit my system
goes to hell. It doesn't seem to like the fact that proc is not being
mounted.

Right now I'm using 2.6.3 and my system is usable. The only
problem is that modules don't load automatically.

Correct, yes. But mirroring the swap partition is pretty useless.

I'd stgrongly suggest splitting up your / partition a bit
further. At least, create separate /usr and /home partitions,
for to be able to safely repair parts of your filesystem in
case of problems. While a RAID is fine, it doesn't cover
all kinds of possible errors. I just lost a perfectly
running system due to the fact that one of my
mirror drives died in the middle of a kernel update -
causing corruption on _both_ drives simultaneously. Ouch.

I could at least save all of my important data
on the various md* devices by using a third disk as
intermediate file repository and mounting the partitions
one by one manually. And I had a backup, of course.
No fun, though. And it took me 2 days to get everything
back working again.

No. There's no gain in using the Promise card - it's just
an additional IDE card with _NO_ HW-Raid functionality at all.
Contrary to what Promise claims, it's pure software-RAID.

Here's a trick that you can use over and over again, without having to
understand those complicated icon thingies. Click on the kterm icon
(looks like a computer display monitor). That opens up a window that
gives you direct access to any program on your system! In that
window, type "vi" and press the Enter key; now you're in vi, and you
didn't even need to use a mouse to start it!

You can do that with a lot of programs on your system - try it! Just
leave that kterm window open all the time, and you'll always be able
to start anything! If the program you want to start up is a GUI
program, just append a "&" after the program name, and you'll still be
able to use the kterm to start other stuff! Best of all, now you can
tell your friends you know what to do with a command line interface,
and you don't need no steenking mouse to do things!

How to add an fstab entry?'s a cool scene! Dig it!

You have to create a mount point for your disk/device to be mounted
on. This mount point must be an actual directory that actually exists,
otherwise this won't work. You did create the directories to use as
mount moints, didn't you? If not, then do so. For example, if you want
the Thumbdrive mounted on /mnt/thumb, then issue the following command
before trying to mount it:

md /mnt/thumb

Simple, huh? :)

It's possible, but try the above first.

How can I simplify the creation of a macro for my users

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 01:48 PM PST

I recorded a set of simple macros and added them to a tab on a customized ribbon.  It works fine, but now I have to roll this customized ribbon out to my users and I'd like them to take ownership of updating the macros and adding new ones.  The problem is even if I give explicit instructions on how to do this, I fear they still will not be able to do it without calling me for help.  Is there a way I can simplify the steps involved in recording a macro and adding it to a tab on the ribbon?  I guess I'm asking if you can create a macro that creates a macro?

Here is a sample of the type of macro I created:

Sub Macro2()
'
' Macro2 Macro
'
'
    Selection.TypeText Text:="This is a test." & vbTab
    Selection.InsertDateTime DateTimeFormat:="M/d/yyyy h:mm am/pm", _
        InsertAsField:=False, DateLanguage:=wdEnglishUS, CalendarType:= _
        wdCalendarWestern, InsertAsFullWidth:=False
End Sub

The bolded section is all the users would need to be able to add or modify.

Not only is the icon wrong on the desktop, but it is wrong (for both programs) on the start tiles and when I search through all the apps in the metro interface.  In addition, when I go through "libraries", a blank page is the icon next to each file, not the usual "w" or "p".  This doesn't seem to hinder the use of the programs and seems more of a cosmetic issue, but this is a new computer and I would like for it to at least look like everything is working properly.

Thank you to whoever takes the time to read this.

multilevel list styles,

Posted: 04 Dec 2012 12:25 PM PST

Two issues on this specific outline. I want "ARTICLE I" centered, bold, all caps with the title underneath same formatting. The auto number here is the "ARTICLE I". The the next level for numbering is 1.1, tab, text. (left margin, .5 indent, bold)

When I set that up, the ARTICLE I centering is off and the second issue I have is can't figure how to make the second level number automatically go to 2.1 under ARTICLE II.

I have linked the mulilevel numbering list to the Heading Styles accordingly. That works great but having the centering issue on the first level and when I'm in Article II, I need level 2 to be 2.1, ARTICLE III, 3.1, etc.

i have this sentence:

"Naturally this is becomes a hot topic for conspiracy theorists".

what do i have to turn on to get word to realise that the "is" shouldn't be there? it's not flagging it at all and would like it to notice things like this when i'm on a typing run!

Very slow response in opening Word Starter 2010.  Keeps popping up a message on the lower right task bar that it is slow to respond due to downloading. The progran says updates are current.

See step 8 below. Maybe you're trying to mount /boot which is ext3?

Redhat 9 with 2.6 Kernel Upgrade from Source
Mike Chirico
Last Updated: Thu Feb 19 10:41:38 EST 2004

The latest version of this document can be found at:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/souptonuts/README_26.txt?download

For configs ref:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=79320&package_id=109944

STEP 1:

Download the latest version of the kernel and any patches. This
documentation
is done with linux-2.6.3, but look for later versions.
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/

Also take a look at http://www.codemonkey.org.uk/post-halloween-2.5.txt
This has some useful hints on some of the changes needed.

STEP 2:

Download the latest version of module-init-tools
[module-init-tools-3.0-pre10.tar.gz] and modutils-2.4.21-2x.src.rpm

http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/rusty/modules/

STEP 3:

Install module-init-tools. This will replace depmod [/sbin/depmod] and
other tools.

tar -zxvf module-init-tools-3.0-pre10.tar.gz cd
module-init-tools-3.0-pre10 ./configure --prefix=/sbin make make
install

STEP 4:

Install modutils-2.4.21-23.src.rpm. You'll may get warnings about user
rusty and group rusty not existing. Also, yes, you'll have to force the
install. If you don't do these steps for both Redhat 9 and Redhat 8, you'll
have problems with the make modules_install.

rpm -i modutils-2.4.21-23.src.rpm
rpmbuild -bb /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/modutils.spec
rpm -Fi /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/modutils-2.4.21-23.i386.rpm

STEP 5:

Install and configure the kernel. Do NOT use the /usr/src/linux area!
Reference the README. I put my files in /home/src/kernel/

gunzip linux-2.6.3.tar.gz tar -xvf linux-2.6.3.tar cd linux-2.6.3

If you have patches install these now:

bzip2 -dc ../patch-2.6.xx.bz2 | patch -p1

STEP 6:

Copy the appropiate /usr/src/linux-2.4/configs [kernel-2.4.20-i686.config,
kernel-2.4.20-i686-smp.config] to .config in /home/src/kernel/linux-2.6.3

cp /usr/src/linux-2.4/configs/kernel-2.4.20-i686.config
/home/src/kernel/linux-2.6.3/.config

If you don't have the source configs, you can download them from here:

https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=79320&package_id=109944

I've also included a file config2.6-chirico which was a 2.6 version for some
of my systems. This isn't a bad reference if you run into trouble.

STEP 7:

Assuming you copied the appropriate kernel-2.4 config to .config, run the
following which will run through necessary questions for the 2.6 kernel. Or,
you might want to use the config2.6-chirico...this has already been run
through make oldconfig on my system, and I've answered the necessary
questions
for a general system.

make oldconfig

STEP 8:

This is very important. Make sure you're .config has the following in it
CONFIG_EXT3_FS=y You'll run into the following error if you leave this =m
instead of =y:

pivotroot: pivot_root(/sysroot,/sysroot/initrd) failed

This is because Redhat 9.0 and 8.0 user the ext3 filesystem for /boot ...

STEP 9:

Edit the Makefile and add changes to the Extraversion is needed. Patches
will
update these values as well.

VERSION = 2
PATCHLEVEL = 6
SUBLEVEL = 3
EXTRAVERSION = -skim-ch6

STEP 10:

make bzImage

STEP 11:

make modules

STEP 12:

make modules_install

STEP 13:

make install

If you come across errors here, what version of "depmod" is being picked
up in your path?

STEP 14:

mkdir /sys

STEP 15:

/etc/rc.sysinit needs to be modified. Look for the following line

action $"Mounting proc filesystem: " mount -n -t proc /proc /proc

and after this line enter the following:

action $"Mounting sysfs filesystem: " mount -n -t sysfs /sys /sys

Here's my /etc/rc.sysinit for reference:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/souptonuts/rc.sysinit.txt?download

Be very careful at this step. Backup the /etc/rc.sysinit file. I didn't
need any USB support, but your configuation may need it.

Thomer [http://thomer.com/linux/migrate-to-2.6.html ] also added changes
to /etc/fstab. I did NOT have to do this. No harm in addding; you'll just
get errors when booting that it can't be mounted twice.

STEP 16:

Check the following:

a. The new image file should be installed on boot and there should be sym
link to it. My latest kernel is 2.6.3-skim-ch6, and I got the "-skim-ch6"
from the values I put in the Makefile, so I see the following:

/boot
vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.6.3-skim-ch6
System.map -> System.map-2.6.3-skim-ch6

/boot/grub/grub.conf Should have been automatically updated from make
install and look something like the the following:

# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this
file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,2)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hda6
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/hda
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,2)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Red Hat Linux (2.6.3-skim-ch6)
root (hd0,2)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.3-skim-ch6 ro root=LABEL=/
initrd /initrd-2.6.3-skim-ch6.img

b. The directory /sys exists

c. You added the mount command for sys

d. CONFIG_EXT3_FS=y was used in the .config

So these are the grub instructions equivalent to the lilo ones I mentioned
in the other post. Finally saw an example in how to do it! Thank you!

I've tried to learn more about grub, but did not find it very easy, and did
not find so many resourses (at least at this moment, it was easier to go
deeper into lilo). For practical purposes, continued with lilo, to which I
have more familiarity.

Locking users to dir

What do you mean by "locking"? When set correctly, UNIX file system
permissions will ensure that he can only write to his homedir (and certain
world writable dirs) and that other homedirs are not readable by him.

If you want to provide a restricted environment, for example one where he
does not have access to all binaries and cannot see your configuration
files, you can achieve this by using chroot. Check out

XF86Config looks like a good place to start. I'm using XFree86-v3 (Deb
3.0r1), might be different if RH9 uses v4 but it is probably similar and
should be noted in the X documentation.

Microsoft Word - Too Many Spaces Between Senteces

Microsoft Word - Too Many Spaces Between Senteces

Too Many Spaces Between Senteces

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 05:49 AM PST

My documents frequently have too many spaces (2,3,4,5) between sentences, as a result of all my editing. It's cumbersome to remove all these spaces. Is there a way to quickly or automatically remove all these excess spaces, without changing the space between paragraphs? I don't want to merge paragraphs. Whithin a paragraph, I do want my sentences separated by a single space. I'm not sure how to do this with the standard Word commands. Could a macro perform this function? What macro do you suggest? Thank you.

Tool to tally number of captions in a Word document

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 05:20 AM PST

Is there a plug-in or offline (batch) tool that provides a count of the number of captions (for figures and tables) in a Word document (or for all word documents in a folder)?
The reason for asking this question is that we will shortly have to make all documents comply with accessibility standards which will require alt text to be prepared and inserted for all plots and tables, and I would like an automated way of calculating amount of work (have many hundreds of documents that are potentially affected).  The next step would be to create the alttext 'offline' and then insert automatically.

Quotation Marks do not appear correctly when typed in front of a word beginning with a vowel.

Posted: 04 Dec 2012 05:16 PM PST

My father-in-law has a new computer with the Microsoft Home Office version (a.k.a. Student version); he has problems with quotations in Word:  when he tries to type a vowel or a word beginning with a vowel in quotes, ie "a", he gets a with two dots above it.  This only happens on words which begin with a vowel.  His language is set as English and all other keys/letters and symbols work fine.  Also, when he hits the quotation key, the quote marks to not appear until he types a word or hits the space bar.  How can he fix his quotation marks so they type correctly for words begining with a vowel?

bookmarks as an external reference document

Posted: 04 Dec 2012 02:04 PM PST

i placed all my bookmarks on page 1, and numerous reference fields throughout the document pull info from these entries. when i distribute the document i want to delete the bookmark page, but then all my reference fields change to Error! (etc). Can i make the bookmark page an external reference source and still keep the data intact in my document? I have a macro to update all fields and it works fine within the document. when i print-preview it also updates the fields and that works fine as well. it isn't until i delete the bookmark page that the reference fields go into error.  also, when i distribute the document, i convert it to pdf because i have a lot of formatting in it and i worked hard to develop this document, i'm not willing to share the formatting, only the content. when i convert to pdf, all reference fields go to error, even if i don't update them after deleting the bookmark page.
i've been using this document template just fine for years in other versions of word - it's only the word 2010 that has this problem with the changes in developers tools. i am sure it can be done - i just don't know how.
does anyone know how this can be approached?
