Microsoft Word - link paths don't all change with folder name change

link paths don't all change with folder name change

Posted: 22 Sep 2014 02:26 PM PDT

I have a project where Excel files and Word files (all 2007) link back and forth.

All are Excel->Word or Word->Excel. I changed the name of the folder that contains

all of this to include a date so we keep track of which backup version is which.

I migrated the folder to my wife's computer & found out a lot of the hyperlinks failed

to work, 8 altogether out of dozens, and ALL of them Word->Excel. I discovered the

hyperlink paths had the paths from my computer which didn't make me feel good.

When I checked them on my computer the problem was these hyperlinks had the old

folder name while the rest of them reflected the new folder name. So the same errors

happened on my computer. I just didn't notice the old folder name in the paths on my wife's machine.

I did a little test using a folder with just one Excel file and 2 Word files. When I changed the

small test folder name one of the return Word hyperlinks failed to change its path & had the

old folder name.  But I could not get this action to repeat so I can't isolate something I may

or may not have done.

Any clues? Is something wrong with my brain?  Yeah, I know, I know.

Unable to locate "Version" control to save a file.

I am attempting to use MS Office's version of "Version Control". I created and saved a document. Now, I want to edit it and save the changes as a different version. I thought I should see a "Version" on the file menu, but I am not finding it. What am I doing wrong?

Automatically copying blocks of text from one part of word doc to another

Posted: 22 Sep 2014 07:42 AM PDT

I am trying to create a report template which automatically populates text into different sections to avoid repeating same text manually.  Some of the text is short i.e. client name, date etc. Other text comprises a full paragraph which will automatically copy from the main body, into a conclusion section and also and executive summary.  I have been using Content Controls, but the document seems to struggle to open and doesn't like to be moved, copied or saved elsewhere, which, considering this is to act as a template for other reports is not helpful.

Any idea what the best way to achieve the above would be?  I have a reasonable understanding of word but this is beyond my capabilities and the template I have produced so far, is not reliable or trustworthy.

I am using Microsoft 365 on Windows 8.

Many Thanks.

Table Header seperating from Table

Posted: 22 Sep 2014 07:35 AM PDT

Hello everyone,

I have created a table which goes agrocss multiple pages.  I have set up the table so the Header is repeated.

For some reason the Table header "splits/seperates" from the table so it is by itself and the table is on the next page with the header.  I have looked for a return, page break but cannot see what the issue is.  I have an image below showing you what happens.  As you see on the top right page you can see a Table header by itself and it repeats itself on the next page.  In some instances the table header is on a page by itself and then starts on the next page.

Any ideas to help gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks

Keyboard shortcut for Autocorrect Options button

Posted: 22 Sep 2014 06:48 AM PDT

When you've activated Autoformat Options (as you type) you can get that nice "flyover" button ("Autocorrect Options"). When you click the button you have some options e.g. undo the autoformatting. I wish there was a shortcut key to do the same, just like the Paste Options button which can be activated by pressing the Ctrl-key.

I know you can just type Ctrl+Z to undo the latest change, but I want to see the same options menu provided after clicking the button with the mouse.

I know there are ways to get the autocorrect dialog, but again, I just want the button activated by a keyboard shortcut.

Is that possible?

I checked several post like below, but those don't answer my question.

Digital Ink in Word 2013 increases file size dramatically

Posted: 22 Sep 2014 02:32 AM PDT

Hi, we have switched from Office 2010 to Office 2013 at work. When using the "ink" function in Word on a tablet, the size of the file blows out to 7Mb for a 6 sided document, where the doc without ink might have been 250 Kb.

Is there a way to change how word saves this ink?

Previously, I have used Word 2010 in "compatibility mode" and in that case the ink hardly increases the file size.

I want to find a way to use ink but without the massive change in file size.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Keyword search results Word 2010

Posted: 22 Sep 2014 12:31 AM PDT

I have tagged the documents in a folder with keywords, using the Document Panel.  I assumed that when I searched the folder by keyword I would get a list of all the documents in the folder with that keyword.  Instead, I only get one document - the last one to be modified.  I'm sure I'm making a simple mistake, but I can't for the life of me see what it is.  Can anyone help?

Hi there,

One of my friends set me a word file today, which contains some equations and formulas. Unfortunately i am not able to see the equations in the file - whatever i see are only empty boxes.
I tried to solve the problem using info provided in this page but i think those options are not available in Word 2013 Professional. I have also attached a picture to show how does it look like on my screen.

I would be grateful if anyone would help me to deal with this issue.

Recent documents won't stay in recent documents section of word 2013

Posted: 21 Sep 2014 09:28 PM PDT

If I work on a document in Word 2013 and save it, it goes into the' recent documents' section of 'file' but after a few days it stops being in the 'recent documents' section. It is able to be accessed still by opening folders etc so it hasn't disappeared off the computer.  If I pin it, the same thing happens. I have gone into options and changed settings e.g. changed the number of documents to put into recent documents but nothing seems to help. Any suggestions?

Word 2013 forcing me to save as new file

Posted: 21 Sep 2014 08:01 PM PDT

I am having a problem saving files in Word 2013.  On my tablet, I was working on a file and tried to save.  Instead of saving, it opened the dialogue box you get when you do a "save as."   I tried to overwrite the existing file, but it would not allow that.   So, I had to save the file with a new file name.  Why would it do that?  Is there a fix?

Font spacing (kerning) issues after cut & paste from Visio into Word

Posted: 21 Sep 2014 08:01 PM PDT

Hello,

Products - Visio 2013, all the updates.  Word 2013, all the updates.  Windows 7, 64bit.  Latest & greatest of everything.

1. Create two text boxes in Visio with any basic font - Calibri let's say.  Put in a few sentences into both.

2. Highlight both boxes, copy them (CTRL-C) and paste (CTRL-V) them into Word.

Font kerning is all screwed up from the original.  True, it's not unreadable, but it's a far cry from the original.  I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and the pasted Visio text boxes aren't anywhere near perfection.  It's actually better to use the Snipping Tool and cut and paste THAT into Word.  It looks better.

Why?  Any tricks to make the image crystal clear in Word? Any settings I should fiddle with?

There's got to be a fix.

Chris.

Need help creating an autocorrect math function

Posted: 21 Sep 2014 03:36 PM PDT

I want to create an autocorrect function "\mod" that inserts a "box (mod box)" where "mod" is Roman and "box" means an input box for an value (Roman) or variable (italics).  I copied the linear version of that from a Word document equation then tried pasting it in the proofing autocorrect list in options.  The result is almost what I want but the "mod" comes out as "mo d", i.e. with unwanted space and in italicsI I have no experience creating autocorrect commands for math equations, and I don't know why or how to get around this.

Configure Office through GPO?

Hello Per-Torben

You can manage office 2007 settings through GPOs. You can download the adm
templates for office 2007 from the following link which will then allow you
to import them.

Try this in your XF86Config file:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Dell"
HorizSync 31.5
VertRefresh 50-70
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Standard VGA"
VendorName "Unknown"
BoardName "Unknown"
Driver "vga"

Section "Device"
Identifier "My Video Card"
Driver "vga"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen 1"
Device "My Video Card"
Monitor "My Monitor"
DefaultDepth 8

Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "640x480" "800x600"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"

Modes "640x400"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0

EndSection

That should get your GUI up and running and from their you can config in a
more "user friendly" manner.

You're referring to software packages, not kernel modules. If you're not
using the package it won't use any resources besides the disk space it
occupies so there's no urgency in removing it. If you use your
distribution's package manager to remove unwanted packages, it keeps
track of dependencies and won't remove pieces that are required by other
packages. For Xandros, "Xandros Networks" is the default package
manager, although other Debian-type package managers also work well
(e.g. dpkg, apt-get, synaptic).

with Ubuntu. This will wipe out your existing OS. You do have the
option of creating a dual boot where Ubuntu determines the size of the

partition size. I don't recommend this for beginners.

All in all, this is a very straight forward and easy install.

Thanks to all who replied. I now have a working configuration for kernel
2.6.20, and no, I wasn't able to determine why my original configuration
(based on the default 2.6.20 configuration) failed, nor was I able to

But as it turns out, there are 90 settable options in just the (new and old
methods) netfilter section of the current configuration, and most of them
are three-state: off, module, or built-in. That means this single section
of the configuration is a state machine with (3^90 = 8.72 followed by 42
zeroes) possible states.

Up to now I had been trying various things, and after each change, I had to
recompile the kernel and reboot to see if iptables came up successfully. I
use distcc to speed up compilations (very highly recommended BTW) and I
have a roomful of computers to help distcc along, so I was able to get the
experiment cycle time down to five minutes per test.

Nevertheless, at this rate, I would have required some astronomical amount
of time, vastly greater than the age of the universe, to reach the 50%
probability point of success.

So, realizing this, I posted my situation yesterday, and today I downloaded
the netfilter section posted by "Grant" (thank you), which worked
immediately, and even better, it uses the new, so-called "layer 3
independent connection tracking" approach.

The downside is that I now must paste a magic sequence of options into my
existing configurations, and I cannot even sort out how to select the same
options using the GUI configuration interface (because the names listed in
the GUI, and the names in the configuration file, have little or nothing in
common).

I have this advice to others trying to lick this problem:

1. Selecting all the options guarantees failure.

2. Selecting none of the options guarantees failure.

3. Selecting reasonable, obvious options guarantees failure.

4. Trying to select particular options in the GUI configuration program,
relying on a print-out of a working configuration file, guarantees failure
because of the poor correlation between the names.

To summarize, any rational approach to solving this problem will surely
fail.

Here are the instructions for anyone else similarly stumped:

1. Take the default 2.6.20 configuration and delete the "Core Netfilter
Configuration" and "IP: Netfilter Configuration" sections. Replace those
section with this (commented-out options deleted for brevity):

#
# Core Netfilter Configuration
#
CONFIG_NF_CONNTRACK_ENABLED=y
CONFIG_NF_CONNTRACK_SUPPORT=y
CONFIG_NF_CONNTRACK=y
CONFIG_NF_CONNTRACK_FTP=y
CONFIG_NETFILTER_XTABLES=y
CONFIG_NETFILTER_XT_MATCH_HELPER=y
CONFIG_NETFILTER_XT_MATCH_LIMIT=y
CONFIG_NETFILTER_XT_MATCH_MULTIPORT=y
CONFIG_NETFILTER_XT_MATCH_STATE=y

#
# IP: Netfilter Configuration
#
CONFIG_NF_CONNTRACK_IPV4=y
CONFIG_NF_CONNTRACK_PROC_COMPAT=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_IPTABLES=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_MATCH_IPRANGE=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_MATCH_RECENT=m
CONFIG_IP_NF_FILTER=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_TARGET_REJECT=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_TARGET_LOG=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_TARGET_TCPMSS=y
CONFIG_NF_NAT=y
CONFIG_NF_NAT_NEEDED=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_TARGET_MASQUERADE=m
CONFIG_IP_NF_TARGET_NETMAP=m
CONFIG_NF_NAT_FTP=y

2. Save the edited configuration and, using normal procedures and programs,
set any other options you need.

3. Compile.

The bottom line is that no one with an Internet connection wants to do
without packet filtering, and AFAICS no one can use the existing default
2.6.20 configuration file to produce a successful configuration (it seems
all the successes have been based on a working 2.6.19 configuration, which
I didn't have).

I wonder if it would be too much to ask the kernel maintainers to create a
default configuration file that has the obvious options already set, or a
configuration algorithm that prevents the setting of options that will
create a fatal conflict (which I suspect was my earlier problem)?

extreme (but cheapass) storage solutions

I have a client with up to 9-10TB of video and film files that need to be
backed up.

Right now, they're using GRAID 500GB Firewire drives attached to each
production box - usually one or two GRAIDs per box, sometimes 3.

What we're going to do based on my recommendations is ensure that each box
has enough internal HD capacity to handle production work, and use the
GRAIDs strictly for backup during production work. We'll use the Vembu
Storegrid product (the client is totally on Windows) to do the backups
from the internal hard drives to the GRAIDs.

(Storegrid, BTW, is an interesting product, as it appears to be a complete
redevelopment of rdiff-backup on Windows! It backs up only the incremental
deltas of file changes after first doing a full backup, and allows
restoring backups from any backup point in time, just like rdiff-backup.
They've even modified the rsync algorithm to choose efficient block sizes
depending on the size of the files being backed up.)

For archival storage, right now we're using a Maxtor Tera II 1TB external
storage device, plus two Western Digital 1TB MyBooks, for 3TB of storage.

For additional terabytes, I have recommended to the client to buy a
separate low-end box, with two four-port (or one eight-port) eSATA
controllers. Attached to those would be one eight-bay or one twelve-bay
eSata storage enclosure which four-port fan-in, allowing three of the
ports on each of the controller cards to control up to 12 drives in the
enclosure for a total storage of 6TB. This takes advantage of the 3Gb/s
speed of SATA II as well, which outmatches Firewire when you're dealing
with multiple drives over a single channel.

Then just fill the bays as necessary with 500GB SATA drives, which are
going for around $135-165 these days mailorder from places like Newegg.
750GB drives are overpriced per GB at the moment, but they should be coming
down by end of the year as full terabyte drives hit the market. With 500GB
drives, you get 6 TB out of one 12-bay enclosure. With 750GB drives, you
get 9TB, and by end of the year you could get 12TB using 1TB drives. And
you still have one controller card free that you can attach another
enclosure to if you need another 6-12 TB.

The cost will be around $300 for the box. Any box will do, it isn't doing
anything except hosting the drives and running the network card to receive
the files - it isn't even serving them, since it's an archive box - if you
need file serving, adjust CPU and bus speed accordingly. The eSATA
controllers are expensive at $50-100 or more - but you only need one or
two. The enclosures run $400-800 or more if you need eight or twelve
bays - four-bays and two-bays are more common and cheaper, just depends on
how you want the space allocated. Total cost shouldn't be more than a
grand for the infrastructure and then however many drives you need - and
you can start out with just the drives you need and add on later.

I'd say this is the cheapest and most efficient way to handle large
amounts of video.

Launching Word 2013 causes UAC to ask for permission to make changes.

Posted: 21 Sep 2014 02:38 PM PDT

Hello,

I have been having an issue when I launch Word 2013 it always asks for permission to make changes to the system. I have tried to run the compatibility wizard to fix the problem, since Windows 8 no longer has the compatibility tab in properties, and sometimes I can get it to stop asking, but after a few weeks it will start asking again. Or another issue I run in to is certain settings in the capability wizard will cause windows to no longer allow me to open documents downloaded in the chrome browser because an error comes up saying I need to repair Microsoft Office, which running repair doesn't fix the issue. The UAC prompt is just an annoyance and would be nice to no longer have it ask for no reason. It only asks when launching Word and not any other of the office suite programs.

Why Does a .docx Created in Word 2010 Open in "Compatibility Mode" in Word 2013?

Posted: 21 Sep 2014 02:33 PM PDT

I have documents originally created in Word 2010 and saved in .docx format. These documents have never been opened in anything other than Word 2010 and have never been saved in anything other than .docx format.

When I open these same documents in Word 2013, Word says they are in "Compatibility Mode." Why should they be in Compatibility Mode if they have always been saved as .docx?

Office (2000) fails in Win 8.1

Posted: 21 Sep 2014 01:04 PM PDT

OK, my version of Office Pro is old (2000, SP3 with all updates till support stopped), but I paid for it and it does the job so why pay $s for the latest?

I installed and used it in all modes (except for some of the ODBC drivers missing) in Win 8, no problems.

Now "upgraded" to Win 8.1.  (Bad move)

I can open Word or Excel and use [File][Open] and select a file OK and all the other functions work but, if I double click the .doc or .xls file in a folder (or right click and [Open with] although Word or Excel window opens the file does not open.  Instead I get a popup window with the message "There was a problem while sending the command to the program".

It cannot be access rights as I can open the file from the menu.

I have tried un-installing and re-installing (after removing all traces of Office) but still the same.

I have tried setting compatabilty for all users, no go.

Have MS done a nasty in the upgrade to "promote" sales?

Oddly, Visio works fine.

Can anyone suggest a reason/solution?

How come as soon as I open Microsoft Word 2013 and start typing it freezes then insists on closing?

Posted: 21 Sep 2014 08:09 AM PDT

Hello and thanks for your assistance!

As stated above I have encountered a very frustrating error on Microsoft Word 2013. Every time I open my document and begin typing it suddenly freezes then displays a dialog box saying "We're sorry, Microsoft Word has encountered an error and needs to close." The box has 3 buttons including "repair" "help" or "close." I chose repair and it just caused it to continue to freeze before closing. I am at a complete loss and as I am a college student this is becoming increasingly troublesome. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Can't open Word Documents 2010

Posted: 20 Sep 2014 07:50 AM PDT

Whenever i try to open a word document this message comes up:

Word experienced an error trying to open this file.

Try these suggestions

*Check the file permissions for document or drive

*Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space

*Open file with text recovery converter

I can't work out what the problem is, i know i have enough memory and disk space, i've tried repairing Microsoft office,  i've tried the "Repair and open" option, i'm just not sure what to do.

My school uses "Studywiz" for saving documents, and opening them at home, i wondered if it was a problem with that, but my brother can open all his documents and his word is from the same disc as mine,

Please help!!!!!

There is no upgrade version available for Outlook alone so that's out. It
runs about $109. To be honest with the the cost of HSE + Outlook as a
standalone will cost you less than if you return the HSE (assuming you can)
and buying Office Standard. Plus you'll have PowerPoint and OneNote.

This assumes that you are using it for non-commercial use, of course.

Well, i heard its the common misconception that frequent defragmentation is
necessary to maintain adequate system performance. Although it may produce
substantial file system speed improvements in some cases, for the typical
Windows user the overall performance improvement is minor or unnoticeable.
Defragging the disk will not stop a system from malfunctioning or crashing
because the filesystem is designed to work with fragmented files. So there
is limitations of defragmentation. Does windows XP automatically defragment
in a background process like Windows Vista?
