Microsoft CRM - Risk estimation for CRM load-balancing needed

Risk estimation for CRM load-balancing needed

Posted: 11 Mar 2005 07:24 AM PST

Alfred,

I have received mixed answers on the "supported" issue with load balancing.
However, from what I understand, the "official" answer is it's supported from
the CRM side, but they aren't going to help you configure the farm. The key is
getting high enough up the support chain.

I know that there can be some issues with getting Crystal to work properly in a
farm, though it can be done.

If performance is the concern (vs. reliability), than I think they are better
off in just making sure both the SQL Server & the IIS/CRM server are good
machines. 320 users isn't that big, unless they have a huge amount of data per
user. I think there's a good chance they will be OK with the 2 server install
if the boxes are sized well.

Hi all,

I have a very critical customer, who is aware of the fact that CRM 1.2 is
over its limit in is environment.

Shortly described as:
- 320 users
- a lot of changes with security roles
- CRM Server and SQL Server on one machine.

In the short term, the customer has been convinced that he has two split up
CRM and SQL Server on two separate boxes. In the long term he thinks about
the possibility in having CRM / IIS splitted up by Windows / Network
Loadbalancing.

It's not supported and the customer knows it as well.

But has anyone done this so far and can provide me a technical risk
estimation, what might not run, etc.?
Thank your for your help,

I would try two things first: flush dns and register dns from the command
prompt.
(Start>Run, type cmd, type ipconfig /flsuhdns, press Enter, then type
ipconfig /registerdns, Enter). If this doesn't fix it, try running MS
Anti-Spyware and scanning the machines. I've seen this with a number of
clients who get spyware on their machines and their browsers won't resolve
intranet addresses.

Good luck

adding a schema into CRM

Posted: 10 Mar 2005 05:12 PM PST

Actually, it depends on the fields being added. If you have already added about
10 fields and each was a string of length 50, then you are extremely close to
the limit on the Contact table. Each 50 character string field will take up 100
bytes of the 8k limit as the product ships with close to 7k already used on that
table.

There are limits on the schema fields added. These are, if memory
serves correctly which it probably doesn't, that the total length of
the attributes for fields in a table can not exceed 8192 bytes,
ie SQL only allows 8k to describe the fields for a table.

In practice you are unlikely to reach this limit after adding only 10
fields.

The error reporting in CRM seems to be hidden. The real error messages
are put into the event viewer, the error messages you see when running
deployment manager are generally useless. We have also found the
deployment manager to be unreliable it is prone to fail when creating
schema and to not only fail but to not indicate what items have
failed. If at all possible it is be better to keep any customised
data in tables and databases separate from CRM, then you can access
this directly through SQL, have control of the data and correct it if
necessary.

Sorry for the confusion. My bad. My original question was about CRM,
because BCM wouldn't work if Outlook was connected to an Exchange mailbox.
Midway, I found an update to BCM that solved the problem.

CRM is a whole different animal, obviously, and seems to require a very
careful installation plan.

This is correct, one of my customer's had this requirement, and tested both
the dedicated sub-domain model and the dedicated Exchange server model.
Neither work.

Although they didn't take this any further, I suspect you need to send all
messages to an SMTP relay (Windows Server has an SMTP relay service as part
of IIS), which can then bounce back any mail for @mymaildomain.com.

Hello Frank

Wonder if you might want to bypass fetchxml entirely and query the
contactbase table directly. While accessing the crm databases directly is
not supported you are able to read the databases directly.

Might help if we could understand what you want to do with the contacts once
you have them

Hi,
thanks for your reply.

I think that this is a bug in SQL-Server. Because the error is returned from
the SQL-Server fulltext search.
For example if i type vi* it works.

I don't know if ther is a way to get this fixed...
But in CRM there is no way I think.

Server unwilling to process your request

Posted: 09 Mar 2005 06:05 AM PST

Hi~

This may be an issue where the user you are trying to move is the manager
for other users within the current business unit. To resolve this error
remove the Microsoft CRM user's alias as Manager from other Microsoft CRM
user(s). I have included the below steps to do this.

1. Open the Microsoft CRM web client, click Home, click Settings.

2. Within Settings click Business Unit Settings, click Users.

3. Within the User's window click the View drop down menu and select All
Users.

4. Holding down the Ctrl key select each user that is listed as having the
user to be moved as their Manager.

5. Click Actions and then select Change Manager.

6. The Change Manager window will appear. Click the magnifying glass icon
and then click the Go button.

7. Select the new Manager that is in the same or parent Business Unit for
these users.

8. Click OK. Click OK again to confirm the changes.

9. Attempt to move the Microsoft CRM user to a new Business Unit.

10. If the user is still not able to be moved, restart the Microsoft CRM
Security Service, located on the Microsoft CRM server. You should be able
to move the user to the new Business Unit.

If you continue to receive the error, please refer to the items listed
below:

A. Try removing this user's role and license, then move them to a new
business unit.

B. Please verify this user is not currently logged into Microsoft CRM when
trying to move them.

C. Another possible cause is that the MSSQLSERVER and SQLSERVERAGENT
services were running under a Domain account. Or CRM Server was not added
to the Pre-Windows 2000 Compatible Access group.

If you have CRM admin rights all contacts from CRM will be synced down to
your Outlook folder. The only way to get around this is either select the
option for contacts not to sync to Outlook or put your user account into a
different role where all contacts will not sync. Do not make the security
role change to the default CRM admin role though. Always copy that role and
make the change to the newly copied role.

Customisation CRM 1.2

Posted: 08 Mar 2005 11:25 PM PST

You have 2 options

1. Create a windows service. Use a timer and monitor the database fo
new emails that come into the QueueItemBase table in the cr
database. (check the CreatedOn or ModifiedOn fields for the info).
Cross reference the ObjectId in the QueueItemBase with the ActivityI
in the ActivityBase table.
Generate an email response and send it off.... (I know sounds ver
simple).

2. Alternatively you can purchase a c360 component that does it fo
you (including converting the email to a case and attaching the emai
to the case) http://c360.com. We are a company with over 100 cr
users, so the small costs for each license unfortunately adds up t
too much for us (cheaper to develop in house....) :(

I hope this helps

Ex2007 Header Info Leakage - somewhat urgent

Posted: 13 Feb 2007 01:01 PM PST

You will need to run the outbound mail through a 3rd party gateway or
firewall that will cleanup the internal headers. I have had security people
raise this issue with me before. I don't think it is too big of a deal, but
I do see their point. The less you reveal about your internal network, the
better off you are.

I am not aware of any software that will cleanup the headers, but I think
CheckPoint has some firewall software that will do it. No version of
Exchange does this. I suspect they don't because it breaks RFC compliance
or something.

Thanks for checking. It is not that much of an issue to make it worth
running against all workstations. Just wanted to get backup the explain why
a remote mailbox when viewed from a secondary computer would have email show

to them forwarding or having another instance of outlook open that was

Don't worry about the last test, you don't have the version for web
distribution. You can run Test Email-Auto configuration from outlook and get
the OAB url and append /oab.xml to the end of it to see if you can get to
your CAS server (this will take you to your iis share).

You didnt happen to change the permissons on your IIS server or file share ?

You also have to remember that users in OWA look at the gal differently than
users that use Outlook. OWA used OU based querying over the gal.

Exchange Server Lost

Posted: 11 Feb 2007 05:07 PM PST

I agree for the most part but we must also consider that the admin has
concluded that the manager is incorrect in this decision. This clearly puts
the initiative on the admin to either correct this error or to live with the
consequences.

Another way to address this problem may to consider the training aspect.
I'm assuming that the the Desktop team are MCP/MCSA qualified or equivalent
and that the Server team are MCSE/MCSE+Messaging qualified. This could be
used as a lever to convince the managers that all but the most superficial
(creating accounts and managing distro group ownership) should remain with
the Server team. The managers wins a partial victory by getting at least
part of what he/she/they want and the Server team sheds the tedious part of
managing the Exchange farm while remaining engaged in the more significant
activities previously mentioned.

For what its worth, as a manager, I would be rather keen to see my engineers
taking steps towards understanding and participating in management decision
making processes especially where they can support their position with an
established framework such as Cobit or ITIL. This doesn't mean that you have
to sell the whole management framework concept to the admin or the company
but it demonstrates a level of understanding of how the IT infrastructure
(not the technology) fits into the business plan.

Kind Regards,

Denny

MS Office 2003 question

I did not get a RESTORE disk. My HP has a restore built in. So I guess I
will just have to uninstall the whole mess, right? :)

Office 2007 Silent Repair and Uninstall Scripts

Posted: 21 Feb 2007 12:03 PM PST

Hi Loc750,

In your sample command lines you don't appear to be calling the specific config.xml file.

For a repair you generally shouldn't need to reaccept the EULA.

The Installation .msp file generally would be for initial installation.

=================
<<"Loc750" <microsoft.com> wrote in message news:com...
According to your link, I do not need CompletionNotice, SuppressModal,
NoCancel, or AcceptEULA since Display Level is set to None, so I tried
<Configuration Product="ProPlus">
<Display Level="None" />
<Setting Id="Reboot" Value="Never" />
</Configuration>

Neither the repair (setup.exe /repair ProPlus) or uninstall (setup.exe
/uninstall ProPlus) are silent and both want to reboot. I tried uninstalling
and reinstalling and got the same result. I had already set the Display
Element settings in the Display level section of the Office Customization
Tool (OCT), but there is also the Setting Element. I went back and took a
second look at Modify Setup properties and added SETUP_REBOOT and set it to
Never. The OCT says Modify Setup properties settings only apply to new
installs, so again I uninstalled and reinstalled. The result is the same they
are not silent and both want to reboot.

I'm thinking that Config.xml and the OCT's .msp only apply to installs
because I've never had a problem installing Office 2007 silently and without
reboot in either .bat scripts or SMS advertisements.

office xp standard student edition upgrade

The STE cannot be used as a qualifying product for upgrades and Microsoft
did not recognize cross-grades in Office XP. It appears they do now for
Office 2007.

Deploy MS Office 2007 by GPO

Posted: 21 Feb 2007 01:49 AM PST

Hi Sundace,

For Office 2007 and the new setup.exe program and tools, which use .MSP (MS Installer Patch files) for customizations and multiple
..MSI files for deployment of Office products the use of GPO for deployment isn't the MS recommended approach. GPO deployment
doesn't support the use of .MSP files, so you'll need to work with the config.xml and scripting to some extent to sort of 'roll your
own'.

You'll be able to use the Office policies for the deployment
http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office/f/?en-us/library/873a5392-1b1a-47a1-a863-1f29ef116d0e1033.mspx

<<<com> wrote in message news:googlegroups.com...
I'm trying to find out how to deploy the Office 2007 by GPO.
The technet instructions aren't accessible. When I click the link it
opens a blank (white content page) within technet.

Is there a way to install Office 2007 by GPO and to customize this
installation? If yes, please specify how.
Can all Office 2007 versions be installed that way?

I'm beginning to be afraid that MS kills there own Active Directory
Rollout with the new office installation setup as there is very little
information to find how to do it.>>

Office 2007 setup problems

Posted: 19 Feb 2007 07:28 PM PST

Hi,

I have received your update message with log files. As the application
event log is in the language of Dutch, it is almost impossible for me to
take a look into it as I know nothing about Dutch. Besides, I did not see
any unusual thing in the setup logs.

In this point, I would like to confirm with you if you have tried to run
Vista in Safe Mode and test this issue again. If you do, please tell me the
results. I have listed the steps below for your convenience:

* Perform a Safe Mode in Windows Vista
=======================

1. Restart Windows.
2. At the boot sequence, long press F8 key to invoke startup menu.
3. Choose Safe Mode on the menu and press Enter.
4. After Windows starts in Safe Mode, install again and determine if this
issue still persists.

Meanwhile, you can also try this suggestion:

* Perform a Clean Boot in Vista
======================

1. Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press
ENTER.
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then clear the Load
system services and Load Startup Items check boxes. You cannot clear the
Use Original Boot.ini check box.
3. On the Services tab, select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box,
and then click Disable All.
4. Click OK, and then click Restart to restart the computer.
5. After Windows starts, determine whether the symptoms still occur.

Note: Look closely at the General tab to make sure that the check boxes
that you cleared are still cleared. Continue to step 6 if all of the check
boxes are cleared. If the Load System Services check box is the only
disabled check box, the computer is not clean-booted. If additional check
boxes are disabled and the issue is not resolved, you may require help from
the manufacturer of the program that puts a check mark back in Msconfig.

If all of the check boxes are cleared, and the issue is not resolved, you
may have to repeat steps 1 through 5. However, you may also have to clear
the Load System Services check box on the General tab. This temporarily
disables Microsoft services (such as, Networking, Plug and Play, Event
Logging, and Error Reporting) and permanently deletes all restore points
for the System Restore utility. Do not do this if you want to keep your
restore points for System Restore or if you must use a Microsoft service to
test the issue.

6. Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press
ENTER.
7. On the General tab, select the Load system services check box, click
OK, and then click Restart to restart the computer. If the issue continues,
the issue is with one of the System services. If the issue does not
continue, repeat this step for the Load Startup Items check box. After the
issue occurs, the last item that you selected is the item where the issue
is occurring.

Please try this and tell me what happened.

Regards,

Leon Hao

Install Office Assistant

Posted: 19 Feb 2007 10:10 AM PST

Why would you want the Office Assistant anyways. It is the most annoying
tool that microsoft implemented with their software. Everytime i install any
version of office i will do a custom install and everything is set to "run
from my computer" with office assistant "not installed"
