Word Has Stopped Working

Microsoft suddenly considers my Office Suite as unregistered.  Word does not work--I keep getting a dialogue box saying Word is being readied.  I can sign into my Microsoft account but when I try to sign on in Word it says the account isn't recognized for this product.  I opened this account for this product!!!!!

What is going on?

I tried accessing Word but I got the "Something went wrong" message. I thought it was my computer so I decided to do a reboot and the samething happened. I then tried accessing the other programs of the 2013 Mircosoft Office suite  but the same thing happened with all of them.

I followed through with the instructions given and got the same error code as everyone else.

Help Please!

I saw a previous post stating that we must all post our own issue so that we can have a direct message sent to us to fix it.  I have tried a couple of times yesterday and today to open previously created excel and word documents and have received the following messages:

There was a problem sending the command to the program.

When I exit out of that box, I get a message that says:

Office is busy.

We're sorry, excel.exe can't be used right now because office is busy.  We're either updating or helping you add or remove programs.  

You can try using excel.exe after we're done.  It shouldn't take long.

Please help, I am trying to create cover letters and send in job applications.

When I exit Word 2013 (using Windows 8) I get a message that changes have been made to the global template, and a prompt to save or discard them.  

I have found guidance on this issue online, most of which directs me to disable add-ins in Word.  However, I have no active add-ins (I checked by clicking the two Add-ins options on the Developer tab.  I also checked the Startup folder at C -> Users -> Andrew -> AppData --> Roaming --> Microsoft - Word --> Startup and the folder is empty .

Any other guesses as to what might be the culprit?  I just ran a full system scan using my Norton AntiVirus software and it didn't come up with anything.

Started working on a word document some time ago and inserted some citations(IEEE Style) and created a bibliography section. Recently started working on the same document and when i try to insert a new citation it begins from [1] all over again and continues to [2], [3], [4].......... How can i continue with my old citations and work with the document? please help asap.

pause macro during mail merge to enter number of records to merge

I am trying to have a macro run that will perform a mail merge but I want it to stop/pause so that I can choose the number of records to merge.  I want it stop at mail merge step 6 of 6 so that I can choose "edit individual letters" and then enter the number of records to merge -  i.e. from:  1 to 5 then click ok and the merge to continue.

Spell checker not working in Word 2013

Hello,

I am having trouble with the Word spellchecker. It's Word 2013 run on Windows 8. I've never had trouble with it before, but today I've found it won't work on any document. I've tried unchecking the "do not check spelling and grammar" box, and downloading the dictionaries that are listed as "not installed", but it hasn't worked.

Any tricks?

Office Won't Open

We recently purchased Microsoft office  with Word 2013.  It has worked until a couple of days ago.  When I try to use it it says:

There was a problem sending the command to the program.

Then another box says:

Office

Something went wrong.

We couldn't start your program.  Please try starting it again.

If it won't start try repairing Office from Programs and Features in the control panel.

I tried repairing it, but it said I needed a disk which I don't have since it was just downloaded online.

I don't know if other parts of Office are working.

Rtf file works in Word 2007 but not in Word 2013

A client sent me an rtf document to edit. When I use Word 2007, there is no problem. But when I try to use Word 2013, all the apostrophes (and the letter next to the apostrophe) as well a number of the quotation marks are changed to Chinese characters or question marks. Some of the sentences are broken up and divided into random paragraphs with letters missing and spaces added.

Does anyone have an idea why this is happening. The file is fine in Word 2007 (I checked) but not Word 2013.

I greatly appreciate any help anyone might be able to give me.

I am trying something out for our invoices at work. Currently when we save them from our accounts system they are in PDF format and I want to convert them into Microsoft Word to be able to add our Company Logo. However as this will be done on a regular basis I want to know if there is a way I can create a Header and Footer 'template' that will be available to select from the list of pre-made options every time I use Microsoft Word to quickly add the information and Logo I require.

Keep Text Only option of Cut, Copy Paste not working

I have my default paste option set to keep source formatting for cut / copy paste within a document.

I have noticed that when I use the Paste smart tag to change from this default, match destination formatting works fine, but keep text only does not.

Keep text only is working in the same way as match destination.

Example, two paragraphs of text. One paragraph set to red font. Second paragraph set to blue font, italic. The document default is black font by the way.

When I copy the blue italic paragraph and paste it at the end of the first (red) paragraph, initially it shows blue italic. When I use the smart tag to choose Keep Text only, I expect the pasted paragraph to be black font, no italic. It comes out red, no italic.

I tried setting my default option to Keep text Only but it makes no difference. I have tried this on many different documents, with many different format combinations, it always pastes like match destination even if I say Keep Text Only.

I have also tried this on a test account to see if it was my personal Word settings that were wrong, and the test account behaves the same as mine.

This problem only seems to have started after an upgrade to Windows 7 from XP.

Any ideas please?

Word2010: Document Skewing PLEASE HELP

Hi all,

I'm wondering if any of you can shed some light on a NIGHTMARE I'm having with MS Word 2010.

Everytime I open a document on my computer the tables are skewed and aligned to the right.

On ALL other computers this is not the case and the tables are aligned centrally.

I can align the margins manually, but when I save and exit the document, the skewing returns.

I have "repaired" MS word to it's default settings.

I have deleted and created a new template (norm.doc ?).

I've checked my printer and driver settings and all are okay.

I have checked the margins and paper sizing.

I really have no idea what else to try...  Have any of you seen this?  As I said, the document appears FINE one every other computer, except this one...

Excel table has engulfed all text in a document

This morning I had a 74 page document. I added an appendix in the form of an Excel table by pasting it below a new heading. When I saved the document all of the previous 74 pages disappeared. When I open the document now it says there are only 4 pages (the table). When I highlight the heading it says there are 10690 words in the title. If I delete the table from the document the heading no longer has the 10690 words in it. and only the 10 words of the title remain. How did this happen and how do I get my document back?

I don't worry if the source of the file from the original MS Office. but if that file created not using the original MS Office, is it will effect my office & OS license?

Serious problem in documents with track changes: text disappearing, formatting haywire, etc.

I am encountering serious bug-type problems in Word 2013 on both my laptop (Windows 8.1) and my desktop computer (Windows 7). It seems to happen only when I work with documents that have a lot of track changes. At first, only text in the comment bubbles were affected—the left quarter of the text was cut off. Then more problems started happening. The cursor wasn't lining up correctly with the text both in the comment bubbles and in the regular document text. Then formatting went haywire. Nothing was where it should be and the font size enlarges 5 times. Now, large sections of text are gone and entire pages are blank. In the latest 33-page document I'm working on, every single page has gone blank. If I close it and open it again, things seem normal until I start working with it and something sets it off and it goes nuts again—for example, if I start working with automated table of contents, spell check, or track changes in general.

It doesn't matter if I select all markup, simple markup, or no markup views. Shutting down Word (and even shutting down my computer) doesn't help. Reverting back to restored versions of the document doesn't help, either—the problem then begins to happen in previous restored versions even though it wasn't happening when I was working on those previous versions. I had a couple of add-in programs, which I've since uninstalled. Uninstalling those add-in programs has not made any difference. If anything, the problem has worsened. The only thing that works is switching to my husband's computer which has Word 2007. The document goes back to normal and is in perfect shape.

This problem has happened to me with the last three documents I've worked on in the past two weeks (July 2014). I only started working with Word 2013 in early June 2014 and I hate it. I'm usually an early adopter and can adapt easily to change, but this is not working for me at all. I am an editor and I depend on Word every day for my job. It's infuriating that I purchased this thinking it would be an improvement. I can't function professionally with this problem.

Other problems I've encountered with track changes in Word 2013: 1) Comment bubbles that are attached to deleted text don't appear in Word 2013 but they appear in other versions of Word. This is a major problem if clients are seeing comments that I can't see. 2) It's difficult to see exactly where a change has taken place, even in the All Markup view—there is simply a dotted line hanging over the text that turns solid over the spot where a change has taken place. It's ridiculous and nearly impossible to notice.

Hi,

I have a requirement related to developing a word 2010 add in which creates ActiveX controls like buttons. On clicking of button , a modal UI is opened onto which user can enter data. But whenever modal UI is displayed, I can't open or access other word documents. Then I found out that if I open each document in a separate process, my problem is solved.

Is there any solution to open each word document as a separate instance by default?

How to get rid of annoying "Click-to-run configuration failure"

Running Windows 7 Home Premium.  I installed Office 2013 a year ago.  I have set the default program to open Word and Excel files to the 2013 version.

However, when I try to open a Word file from Explorer I get the "Click-to-run configuration failure".  I can right click the file, and choose Word 2013, and it will open fine.  I have to right click and choose even if Word 2013 is open.

For Excel, if I try to open a file from Explorer, I get a message that "There was a problem sending the command to the program".  Then a popup box comes up saying that the specified program does not exist.  There is an error code 463604A-0B211004-00000A09.

I can open the file with Excel 2013 by right clicking on the file and choosing Excel 2013.  Once 2013 is open, the files will open with the program OK.

How can I get these programs to open the files automatically?

Letterheads in Word - two questions

I have two questions about letterheads in Word 2010. 

1. for years I've had my letterheads in a file (doc and docx).  To write a letter with my letterhead, I open the letterhead doc, "save as" with a new name, and then write the letter.  (I have more than one copy of the letterhead file because from time to time I forget to save as a new name, and overwrite the letterhead.)  I was told that a better way to do it is with a template.  So I saved my letterhead as a dotx file.  But from my point of view, I have to do the same thing - open it, save as, etc.  Is there a better way to do a letterhead?

2. I want to insert a date in my letterhead file and have it "update automatically" to the current date when I use it.  But after I save it to a new file, I don't want it to update the date if I read that file in - I want it to keep the original date.  Is there an easy way to do that?

hyperlink "pasting from other programs"

I am pasting from another program containing hyperlinks and they get pasted even though I have set "Options > Advanced > Cut, Copy, and Paste > Pasting from other programs:" to "Keep Text Only". I have also unchecked "Proofing > AutoCorrect Options > AutoFormat" and "AutoFromat As You Type" > "Internet and network paths with hyperlinks".

I know about Ctrl+Shift+F9, but that is aggravating.

Linking text between word documents

I want to link this text that from one word document (source) into the other four other documents (destination) so that if I change the text in the source document it automatically changes in the destination documents.

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium and have all updates installed. I used the documents on Friday and everything worked perfectly now all of a sudden I cannot open ANY of my numerous Microsoft Office files.

In suse 10 I plugged the hard-wire cable in and got on line . I then
deleted the eth0 card and the wireless card worked , even after a

will cause sax2 to write a new xorg.conf file and I am back on square one!

That's what I like with Linux, once you sorted out one problem (sound in my
case) you immediately are facing a new challenge! ;-))

That's what you've got, plus lvm on one and not the other. lvm is a
software thing, but it's still an initrd difference.

FWIW if additional drivers are compiled into the kernel, then the kernel
gets bigger. Either way, additional binary content does compress
(initrd or vmlinuz), but not as much as something with a lot of entropy,
like text, for example.

Hmm. Reminds me of the /sys directory structure on 2.6 kernels...

Normally one fixes problems like this by making sure they have the
latest and greatest from their distro installed. Making source changes
to a distro system can get one into trouble. However, you asked where
to get them so:

dmesg is part of util-linux, the source being kept here:
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/. I forget the exact directory path, but it's
called "util-linux" as well. Becareful about installing things from
it- some of those utilities conflict with what you're likely to have
installed already (for example, the login stuff vs. shadow suite).

syslogd can come from two places I've seen, and someone also pointed
out there is a syslogd-ng. I know GNU makes one, I think it was in the
inetutils source tarball, ftp://ftp.gnu.org. I didn't really like this
one, it was less configurable and dumped alot of the kernel messages
to the screen by default. It's OK, I guess, but I prefer the sysklogd
one.

The one I'm using now I like is actually sysklogd (comes in two
pieces, syslogd and klogd). Getting this to build on a modern system
is alot of work, and you'll need a patch.

http://www.infodrom.org/projects/sysklogd/download/ last version was
1.4.1, and this is what the patch applies against. The patch looks
like it jumps it to 1.4.2.

I don't use the popular "messages" logfile. I see no reason for it.

How to mount a NFS From Linux on Windows

If you want to mount an nfs share on windows, you need software like
"pcnfs". It mounts nfs shares on windows. Sun used to sell this
program and it was also available from other vendors like Chameleon.
Some of the programs are just nfs clients (i.e. you can mount nfs
drives on windows). Others acted as nfs servers too, you could
"export" (share) your windows drive and read it under Linux (or SunOS
or any other version of Unix). However, I haven't used any of those
programs since around windows 3.x time frame (maybe win2k). It is
quite possible that none of them have been ported to run in xp, or
that the vendors no longer market them. NFS is a good protocol, in
that it is peer-to-peer, but it is relatively insecure. I got my only
computer virus by having NFS on one of my linux machines when it
wasn't behind a firewall that prevented outside access to the nfs
port.

Instead, the common mechanism these days is to set up a samba server
on linux. Samba runs the same protocol that windows servers uses to
share drives.

Thanks for the responses so far, however rm is the ONLY operation which
seems to suffer. Reading and writing , in my understanding would be far
more likely to saturate the controllers but only rm performance seems
to suffer.

As far as how I've partitioned the disks, I did it for a reason (see

I am using IDE but I am also using SW raid, not a HW controller in the
motherboard (the motherboard doesn't have one). The processor is a 1GHZ
Duron and seems up to the task of reading/writing. I am using separate
controllers for the disks, all on the same motherboard but different
controllers for each as there are four on the board (Promise
Ultra-ATA). The problem seems unique to rm.

Iirc the redhat documentation provides an overview about
/etc/sysconfig/ files which should mention a few settings. For UK

How is it possible for any task ever to extend beyond the project end date?
The project end is when all of the work in the project has been completed.
If any work is left to do, the project is not done yet. If a task is in the
project, it represents work that is part of the project. A project is never
considered ended until all of the work on all of the tasks is completed.
Ergo, it is impossible for a task to ever extend beyond the project finish
date since such a delay pushes back the finish date accordingly. It is true
that tasks might take place after a project's required finish deadline but
that's something else entirely - that's a project that is finishing late.
But the project end date and the project's finish deadline date are two
different things.

You can't leave them blank but that doesn't mean you have to pay any
attention to them. You shouldn't be entering dates in the start and finish
columns anyway so that shouldn't be an issue - those fields are intended to
be calculated for you except in certain relatively rare situations. The
leaves the duration field - just leave it at the default "1?" entry, the
question mark indicating that no duration estimate has been entered. After
you have completed the list of tasks and perhaps even after setting up the
dependency links between them, you can come back and enter the durations.

Your statement "available for specific hours within a specific time frame"
is a clue how to proceed. The maximum availability percent is NOT a measure
of the number of hours during the day the resource is available. IF a
resource's maximum availability is 50% is does NOT mean he's available 4
hours per day. It means that when he's assigned to a task for 1 day, he's
going to be doing other thangs as well and so only gets accomplished what
COULD have been done in 4 hours if he wasn't distracted. But from the
project schedule perspective, he's working on that task for 8 hours, not 4.
In order to show he can only work on the project 4 hours a day, you need to
modify his calendar so it shows 4 hours per day as thye work hours, not 8,
using those specific hours he can work on your project. You have him in the
morning and he's doing something else non-project related during the
afternoon for example.

Here's the difference in how such scenarios are handled. You have a task
starting Monday at 8 am and you have estimated it will take 1 day. You
assign Joe Resource to it at 50% because that's his maximum. You'll find
the task starts Mon 8am, ends Mon 5pm, and generates 4 man-hours of work
output. OTOH, you assign Bill Resource to it. Bill's calendar shows his
hours of work are 8-12 only. You assign him to the task 100%. The task now
starts Mon 8am, end Tue 12noon, and generates 8 man-hours of work output.
If you look at the usage view for each assignment with a time frame expanded
out to show hour-level detail, with Joe's assignment you'll see he's
scheduled to be working 1/2 hour out of each hour through the full work day.
If you look at Bill's, he's scheduled to work 1 hour for each morning hour
but nothing during the afternoons. So you need to decide, which model is
the most accurate description of your particular scenario?

I was only giving an example and the length of the task doesn't affect
it. Are you sure you hit the "update as scheduled" and not one of the
other specific percentage complete buttons by accident?

How about the time scale of the Gantt timeline - what was it set to?
The only time I've seen anything like what you describe is it does
round up to show progress through the end of whatever unit includes
the current date. So if today was Wednesday and the timeline was set
to show "weeks" as its granularity, the "update as scheduled" would
should progress through the end of the current week, jumping the gun
by a couple of days. Could that account for what you're seeing?

Choose "Customize fields"
In the dialog box that shows up check the settings for "Calculation for task
and group summary rows". If it is not set to "use formula" then that is your

Yes, Project Server 2003 needs SQL Server installed as all of the enter
project and enterprise resource data is stored in a SQL Server database. In
the future, if you have questions specifically related to Project Server,
you might consider asking them in the microsoft.public.project.server

When I want to replace a blank space with the contents of the clipboard Word is NOT replacing the space, even though it is selected.  For example:

(A) Text

I want to replace the space between the ) and the letter T with the contents of the clipboard, using  Crtl+V.  I select the blank space, do the insert and the blank space is back.

Also, when I double click on a word followed by punctuation and drag that word to another place in the document, Word inserts a space after the text that is selected.  There is no space withing the selection.

I KNOW it's buried in the Options setup in Word 2010 but I can't seem to find it and now it's all a blur!

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

In a Word 2013 document insert a 3 x 3 table

In row 1 add "XX" to each cell

In row 2 add plain text CCs to each cell

Select the table and set cell text alignment to right

All is well

Select row 1 and insert a repeating section CC.  Add a new section and notice the text in the new section is also right aligned.  This is good.

Select row 2 and insert a repeating section CC.  Add a new section and notice that for some incomprehensible reason the new section is left aligned.

Is this a bug or by design?  If design, for what possible reason?

Content controll autopopulate

I have a four page form designed in word 2013.  Each page has an address field that is filled out on the first page.  I'd like to type in the address on the first page and have it autopopulate the other three pages with the same address.  The only way that seems to halfway work is adding legacy form fields (I can't get the content control fields to do what I want).  I then print preview to get all the fields to update.  The problem is when I save to or export to pdf the field data will not show or print.  What is the best way to do this so that the new data will print on a saved pdf file?

Hi guys,

I wonder if anyone else has been having any of the same issues. I have just lost 3 hours' work due to consistent crashes in Word with the last crash destroying the file on which I was working (thanks Word!). I am trying to create an infographic resume using SmartArt, Shapes, and Textboxes but Word cannot seem to handle the load and crashes on save.

I am now utterly fed up with Word and am going to use a proper tool (InDesign) to get the job done right. Will then export to PDF and find a way to convert that to DOCX. It is a real pity that Word is not up to the task, InDesign is total overkill for such a small project. Maybe in the next version of Word?

Macro to convert date format in a document?

I want a macro to convert date format so that "11/5/2011", for example, or "11/05/2011" would become  "11 May 2011".

Instead the macro I'm trying out gives me the following:

Find multiple letters in Word

I'd like to be able to find (i.e. have Word highlight) the letters k, kh, g, gh. 

For example in the following words:

I'd like only those specified letters to be highlighted:

Is there any way to do this?  It looks like it might be possible with complicated wildcard entries but maybe only for individual words?

Office 2007 and 8.1

Office 2007 has been running great up until recently.  Word logo displays with cursor turning, never bring up program.  Seems to always happen when updates are applied.  I usually do a recovery to earlier windows update and then it will work.  now outlook is starting.  I know your trying to make money and have everyone update, But I have been buying package upgrade or new versions, staring way back in the early windows days.  Enough is enough, now that I am retired,

$ is tight.  I downloaded Open systems package that is free, but I prefer office. 

I present looking at the new surface that was just release for my granddaughter, for college, Is she going to have these same problems????

We can not continue to ignore the people out here.  if you say its compatible, then make it.  Its getting old.

Help with Microsoft Word Display 2010

In my word documents I have a problem with the on screen display of hyperlinks and also Contents.

Instead of displaying want i am typing it shows the full hyperlink e.g. instead of www.bbc.co.uk it displays {HYPERLINK"http://www.bbc.co.uk"} and for table of contents {TOC \o"1-3"\h\z\u"}.

It prints what it is suppossed to print but is very difficult to manage a document as you write it with out the actual text showing.

office 2013 is not opening

I recently bought a new acer aspire V7 and had installed office home and student 2013 at the retailer. All went smooth and fine while using it for the first time. But when I went to open  a new document or open a saved file it doesnt open. This is seen on word, excel, powerpoint and one note. And this is only after three days of installation. The system runs on windows 8.1. If anyone can please provide a solution it would be of great help. Another point to be noted is that it does not provide any information as to why and how it is not working. I would be really happy if anyone could respond as soon as possible to this question.

Greetings,

I have no idea why this is happening, but when cross referencing to a specific section in my document which has standard, arabic numerals in the footer e.g. 112, the page number in the cross reference comes out as roman numerals "(see p.cxii)".

This issue is only with one section. Cross references to other sections in the document come out fine (standard arabic numerals).

(Platform: Word 2010 on Windows 7 Pro)

Word 2013 suddenly stopped working. All other programs are running fine. Word had been fine till yesterday but now won't open at all. Nor can I repair or uninstall the program. I had a long session with the answer tech folk which resulted in a support sales pitch. help please. John

Cross-reference styles

When I insert a cross-reference the reference is inserted with its style. I know how to modify the C-R field to change the case (e.g., in an endnote), but often the point size of the page no., bookmark, heading, etc. is different from the text where the C-R is being inserted.  How do I control this, so the C-Rs can be updated without changing the styles.

Unprotected a document without the password?

So, I password protected a document forever ago. And, low and behold, I forgot the password. All I need is a free (or super cheap) option that will find the password for me. I have googled for hours looking for an answer but it's either too expensive, or will take over 2 months. Solutions?
