When I put those numbers into a cell, I get the correct (as verified by
bc) answer. When I create a sequence with formulas (e.g. =A77+A76) then
I am able to reproduce the error.

This is on OOo 2.2.0-1ubuntu3 on a modern OS:

Yes Open office Mail would be useful to me too.

I could not code it for myself, however so I would suggest it, and hope that someone else with the skills would be interested.

We have to value the ideas of non techy users.

Is Microsoft overstating the situation? Perhaps, but
considering that they have been forced to accept US$3.00 or
less per seat for MSO & WinXP to keep contracts, because
organizations are threatening to move to Linux & OOo, I
think it is safe to say that FLOSS is making major inroads.

things like, "If you want xxx feature, code it yourself".

As opposed to proprietary software, where if you want a
feature you have to wait on the pleasure of the proprietary
vendor to implement it. FLOSS gives the user the potential
to customize the software to their needs. Granted with
FLOSS you either need to code it, or pay for somebody to
code it. With proprietary software, those options are denied
to you.

[discuss] What is OpenOffice.org relationship to SourceForge.net

* OOo-1.1.3-ZA was their creation, This was the the first

select/change the language of the UI. [ The Thai/English
edition was Sun project, based upon StarOffice, not OOo. The

That is very good to hear. Spreading the word and community assistance are
all what Open Source is about.

One quick word of netiquitte. For email lists it is considered 'hijacking
the thread' if you use an existing thread for a new subject. It is often
better to start a completely new thread. The main reason is that many people
on this list would have missed you comments simply because they thought the

Hi there,
Yeah I agree, someone quickly put something together!!
As already mentioned an alternative is Scribus www.scribus.net
Starting out as a novice it didn't take too long in getting to grips with
Scribus. It's powerful, has a enthusiastic community, and seeing as it's
free is a superb open source alternative.
Keep in mind the 1.3.3.* version is the stable branch while the 1.3.4 is the
development.
Enjoy.

It'll all be public as of the 15th, I think.

Also, the "not quite as good" tech guarantee promotion seems to be set

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac $354.99
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Student and Teacher $130.99
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Upgrade $214.99
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition $449.99

And if you are still looking to use the promotions....

Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac $309.99
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Student & Teacher 129.99
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac upgrade $209.99

If you buy through the blog links, it will help support the site. Everything

ReInstall Office Test Drive.

Posted: 07 Jan 2008 07:57 PM PST

Be careful - I don't know what "2004 and 2008 working together with VBA"
means. Office 2008 does NOT support VBA, and any Office 2004 files with
macros will open, but the macros will NOT run. Can both office 2004 and 2008
be installed on the same machine and work without interfering with each
other? Probably, but we'll know for sure next week.

As far as interfacing to SQL, this is quite possible with Office 2004. Look

I know this isn't what you want to hear [and I don't blame you:-)] but the
characters in the keys can be quite deceptive - it sometimes requires every
conceivable combination of l's versus 1's (that first is a letter, the
second a number) & O's versus 0's (which are less often the culprit, but can
still be a PITA).

Another possibility - where/when did you obtain the software? If someplace
like ebay or elsewhere on the web, it wouldn't be the first time somebody
stuck a CD in another's wrapper & passed it off as "new"... If it's a copy
you've had for a while is it possible it may have gotten switched with
another copy accidentally?

Did the Macbook ever have the Office 2004 Test Drive installed? If you
installed X without a complete & proper Removal of the Test Drive that could
be the cause of the problem. If so, let us know.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
-= harassment. at work -=
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Once I stopped watching television and listening. to the radio at the end of
1990,. "they" had to find other ways of committing abuses. So they took what
must be for them a tried and tested route; they get. at you by subversion of
those around you. Since they wouldn't be able to do. that with my family or
friends, that meant getting at people in the workplace. to be their
mouthpieces and do their dirty work for. them.

They supplied my employers in Oxford with. details from what was going on in
my private life, and what I and other people had. said at my home and
accommodation in Oxford. So people. at work repeated verbatim words which
had been said in my home,. and repeated what I'd been doing recently. Often
the. most trivial things, the ones from your domestic life, are the ones
which hurt most.. One manager in particular at Oxford continuously abused me
for ten. months with verbal sexual abuse, swearing, and threats to terminate
my employment. After ten months I was forced to seek psychiatric help. and
start taking medication, and was away from work for. two months. I spoke
later with a solicitor about what had happened at that. company; he advised
it was only. possible to take action if you had left the company as a result
of harassment, and such an action would have to be started. very soon after
leaving.

Over a. year later the same manager picked on another new worker, with even
more serious results; that employee tried. to commit suicide with an
overdose as a. result of the ill-treatment, and was forced to leave his job.
But he didn't take action against the company,. either. Abuse at work is
comparable to that elsewhere in. that tangible evidence is difficult to
produce, and the abusers will always have their. denials ready when
challenged. And even if a court accepts. what you say happened, it still
remains to. prove that abuse causes the type of breakdown I had at the end
of 1992. In a recent case before a British. court, a former member of the
Army brought a case against others who had. maltreated him ten years
previously. Although the court accepted that abuse had occurred,. it did not
agree that depressive illness necessarily followed, and denied. justice to
the. plaintiff.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
-= who knows. about it? =-
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Many people know, both in the. establishment and media, and among the
general public. Despite an absence of its target from the UK for more. than
two years, the echoes of paranoia can still be heard. loud and clear from
across the water. When it started in 1990, the only people who knew. were
those in BBC television who were. spying on my home, and a few radio
broadcasters. There. were a few cases of public harassment, but very little
compared to the situation. that developed a couple of years later.

The list. today includes BBC TV staff (newsreaders such as Martyn Lewis,
Michael Buerk, Nicholas Witchell), people from. radio stations such as
Chris Tarrant of Capital and Radio 1 DJs, people in the print. media, but
also many people in the general. public. All united in a conspiracy which
breaks the laws. which the UK does have regarding harassment, and all
completely uncaring for any. semblance of decency or elementary respect
for. individual rights.

The British police (obviously) do know. the nature of the harassment and in
all probability. the identity of those behind it. Some time ago I made a
complaint to my local. police station in London, without positive result.
The. UK police are failing in their duty to see the law enforced in not
checking the. abuse.

Posted: 01 Jan 2008 03:24 AM PST

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
-= how and why. did it start? -=
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

The harassment didn't start by itself, so someone must have been. there at
the outset to give it a firm push and set. the "animals" after me. It looks
as. if I was set up in June 1990, and the timing indicates someone from
university was. responsible.

In May or June 1990, Alan Freeman on Radio 1 read. out a letter from someone
who had known me for a few years, who wrote of the. one who "wore out his
welcome with random precision" (from the Pink. Floyd song). Freeman went on
to say to the. writer "that's a hell of a letter you wrote there". The
indication is strongly that people I had. parted from soon before nursed a
grudge against me and were trying to cause. trouble for me.

The suggestion is that Freeman. might have shown the letter to other people,
and things could have snowballed from there. Right from the. start the real
source (security services. presumed) didn't announce themselves as the
origin, but let the. "talkers", the radio DJs, believe that they were the
originators. Think about it; if. you announce, "we're MI5 and we have a
campaign against this bloke" then people might not go along. with it; but if
you say, "everyone else is getting at. this bloke because he 'deserves' it"
then people. will join in with fewer qualms.

It's the. classic case of hitting a cripple to prove you're stronger. Why
would the security services expend hundreds of thousands of pounds and. more
than six years of manpower to try to kill a British citizen? Because. they
are motivated. by people who knew me at university and feel personal
animosity; because they knew me to be emotionally weak, and it. is in the
nature. of bullies to prey on those known to be weak; and because they can
rely on the complicity. of the establishment, which the security services
manipulate and derive funding from. This is. England's biggest humiliation
today, and the British security services are intent. on preventing their
humiliation becoming reality. by continuing their campaign of attempted
murder to. suppress the truth from becoming public.

That's exactly what. we did. We went to a competent, professional detective
agency in London, paid them over 400 quid to debug our. house. They used
scanner devices which go to over 1 GHz and would pick. up any nearby
transmitter. in that range, they also checked the phones and found
nothing... but if the tap was. at the exchange, then they wouldn't find
anything,. would they?

CS: >Doesn't this suggest to you that. there are, in fact, no bugs to be found?

You can assume that they've. done this sort of thing to other people in more
"serious" cases, where they would know the targets. would suspect the
presence of electronic. surveillance. So they will have developed techniques
and devices which are not readily detectable either by visual inspection. or
by electronic means. What those techniques might be, I. couldn't guess.

In this case, the existence of bugging devices was clear. from the
beginning, and they. "rubbed it in" with what was said by the boy on the
coach.. It was almost as if they wanted counter-surveillance people to be
called in, who they knew would fail to detect. the bugging devices, causing
loss of credibility to the other things I would have to say relating to. the
harassment.

I did all the things someone in my situation would. do to try to find the
bugs.. In addition to calling in professional help using electronic
counter-surveillance, I made a close. visual inspection of electrical
equipment, plus any points where audio or video. surveillance devices might
have been concealed. Of course, I found nothing.. Normal surveillance
"mini-cameras" are quite. noticeable and require visible supporting
circuitry. It seems to me the best place to put. a small video surveillance
device would be additional to a piece of electronic equipment such as. a TV
or video. It would be necessary to physically break in to. a property to fit
such a. device.

I don't know if it would be better to split these up and ask just one question per page - someone please tell me if so - but I would like to have a sense of "best practices" for doing the following. I do a lot of work from dictation by copying an earlier similar case and then modifying it on the fly. So I need ways to quickly move through the document for editing. Here are some of things I'd like to do (my hope would be to assign a keyboard shortcut to each if possible):

1. Select/delete a sentence.
2. Jump to the start of the next paragraph.
3. Jump to the end of the first line of the next paragraph.
4. Jump to the next comma.
5. Jump to the next period.
6. Delete to end of line.
7. Delete to end of paragraph.
8. Delete a whole paragraph.
9. Quickly find the Templates directory (to open or insert a template).
10. Quickly find my data directory (to open, insert, or save a document).
11. Change spacing. This would be where most of my paragraphs have only the paragraph sign at the end and a relatively small space between them and the next paragraph, instead of the old way of having two Returns after each paragraph so there's a paragraph sign on a line by itself. But then suddenly my doctor will start a numbered list--which then looks best with single spacing. I have found the menu choice of add or remove space before or after a line to manually go in and change each one, but I'm sure there must be a way to change some setting the first time I know it's going to be a list. And vice versa, by the way - sometimes the earlier copy of a document I'm starting with has a list and I no longer want the list or the single spacing.
Maybe it would be best to simply choose the single spacing and use a double Return after each paragraph - but since the numbered lists are definitely in the minority, doing it this way would spread most of the text out unnecessarily.
12. Switch from hanging indent to no indent (or back again).

So whether these would be macros that I created and then stored and assigned a hotkey, or whether there's some simpler way than that - I'd just like to know how to be more efficient at all this.

Thanks!

How can I stop the track change feature in Word 2010 changing list numbering to grey text

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 03:31 AM PDT

I have recently gone to Word 2010 and find that when I have the Track Change feature enabled if I make changes to a numbered list the "numbering" shows in gray text.   I cannot seem to find any setting to alter this.

Also, if I insert multiple new paragraphs in the list the numbring repeats itself!

e.g.    I add a new level (a) which shows as an insertion with numbered level (a) and text in red as expected.

Then I add a new para (b) but this shows (a) in grey striketrhough text (as if it were a deletion) followed by (b) in grey and then the text in red.

Any explanation or tips would be very much appreciated, its driving me nuts!

Thank you,

Donna

numbered list

Posted: 10 Jun 2013 07:17 PM PDT

Now I"m stuck trying to get a numbered list that is flush left:

1.   xxxxx
2.   xxxxx

Every time I put the 1. and a tab everything jumps in a few spaces to look like this:

   1.   xxxxx
   2.   xxxxx

It looks to me like I'm choosing a list that will do what I want but I must not be. I can see the tabs shifting on the ruler and tried to change them back, but they won't stick once the numbers are in there.

Unable to set Table Header Row

Posted: 10 Jun 2013 02:54 PM PDT

I have a table that spans 2 pages but the Header row is not appearing on page two.  I've made the table properties reflect "Repeat as Header Row at Top of Each Page" and the contextual design tab to make sure header row is checked.  Yet, for some reason, it doesn't want to carry over to the second page.

New Word 2013 user

Posted: 09 Jun 2013 07:33 PM PDT

I just installed MS Office 2013 Home & Student on my PC at home. It's an HP running Windows 7. For some reason, when I attempt to open up some documents on a flash drive, Word 2013 will open documents labeled "Microsoft Word Document," but won't bring up documents labeled "DOC."

My system wants me to download MS Works 9 to "play" those "DOC" documents. What is the deal with Word 2013? If it can't bring up .doc documents, that seems like a big drawback to me. I've been able to bring up these DOC documents before, on my work PC running Word 2010, without any problem. Is there something wrong with my installation or...?

Hi Josh,

Did you try ejecting the Office 2000 CD and insert the Office 4.2 CD
when asked for a qualifying product? For Office 2000 you should be
able to use any Office 4.x edition as a qualifying product - the
editions do not have to match.

Do I first go to the control panel and use the remove/add

Anonymous,
Correct to date on the oem difficulties for Office 2003.
Dell, from our experience has the best support via email if you provide
specific answers to questions for warranty replacement and as well being
persistent.
For oem versions of Corel sofware problems, who does the customer contact?
Would the op go thru the same channel to resolve this?

Mandrake10 Login

Posted: 14 Aug 2004 02:54 PM PDT

"Rich Barry" <rr.com> dedi ki:

I agree with other posts that a user shouldn't login to GUI as root. You
can use root privileges from within a normal user session for *most* of
the tasks. One notable exception is being able to use Konqueror file
manager in root mode, without having to open a konsole, "su -", and run
konsole from within that session. Later on I will suggest a way to
streamline this in a normal user session.

However I don't find it appropriate too, patronizing a user and hiding
root login. You can "unhide" root from within KDE Control Center (System
-> Session Management : Users tab) but I don't like the idea of exposing
root user to public. I prefer another way: From Mandrake Control Center
(drakconf) -> System -> Display Manager : Choose KDM instead of MdkKDM.
This will bring up the original KDE display manager (so your adjustments
in KDE Control Center like showing clock, font sizes etc will take effect.)
Both KDM and MdkKDM won't show the hidden root user, but KDM will have an
input field for user so that you can manually enter an arbitrary username
there. This way, both you can hide critical userids fron the public at
large, while still being able to login into them when you need it.

For using Konqueror in root mode from within normal user account: Make a
copy of the Konqueror desktop item in your desktop, right click it and get
into properties dialog, change its icon to something different, get into
the "application" tab and there click on the "advanced features" : There
you will find a "Run with a different user" option. Enable it, and set the
user to root. Now, whenever you click on this icon on your desktop, kdesu
will pop-up and ask for root password, and you will be using Konqueror in
root mode. You can also do a similar arrangement in your KDE menu.

sufficiently clear. Any time consumers get confused, the description is not
clear enough-- this should be an attitude of any doc writer.

Not to forget Debian. Debian is the free linux distro I would choose

Copying files

Posted: 12 Aug 2004 03:12 PM PDT

com (John Bahran) wrote in message news:<google.com>...

The simple answer is to use a gui file manager. Drag and drop works.

The other answer is:
1. Mount it
- let's imagine it ends up on /media/cdrom
2. Make the target directory.
e.g. mkdir /home/john/cd
3. copy recursively from one to the other
cp -R -p /media/cdrom/* /home/john/cd

man cp is your friend.

There is a bit of an issue over symbolic links. Most versions of cp
will create a second copy of a file rather than a link to it. It's
normal to add -P and then create the symlinks by hand.

Another technique instead of using cp is to use tar. The idea is to
create an archive onto a pipe and then expand it again. The details
are in some instances of the man page for tar. This has often been
used to deal with the symlink issue. Something like, if memory does
not fail me:
tar cf - /media/cdrom | (cd /home/john/cd ; tar xf - )

ADSL & Switch

But prpbably those modems will only have UTP ports, no BNC. Also it is
very difficult, if at all possible, to find a multi-port modem with more
than 4 ports, so you would need a regular hub/switch anyway (if not today
then tomorrow). I guess it could be more convenient to get a single-port
modem and a basic 8-port 10 Mbps hub with a BNC port, so you won't have to
change anything in your current LAN setup. Otherwise, without a BNC hub
you would either need to convert your LAN from BNC to UTP, or use yet
another hub with a BNC port to connect the BNC and UTP segments together.

P.S. Lately, some 10 Mbps hubs don't have a BNC port (as nobody uses it
they try to cut costs). But older ones all have a BNC port without
exception.
