on MBR and it didn't work either.

I also checked hardware compatibility, my model is not on the list. But
checking item by item, I found that most parts should be fine.

Problem solved. turns out LILO resides in the bootsect and when I
copied the bootsect of /hda2 to /hda1 that was before lilo was
updated. So I stripped lilo.conf down to just the Linux partition and
made the wait time 30 instead of the default 300.

Here is the rest of the drill:
1. Make /hda2 the boot partition via cfdisk.
2. Run lilo
3. "dd if=/dev/hda2 of=bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1"
4. Copy the file bootsect.lnx to the /hda1 partition, either directly
(fat partition) or indirectly via floppy (ntfs partition.)
5. boot Linux via floppy and make /hda1 the boot partition via cfdisk.
6. Edit the file on /hda1 boot.ini to include a line for Linux. I
edited mine directly from Linux via Vim, but if ntfs is in play one
has to boot Windows,
"attrib -r boot.ini", edit the file and "attrib +r boot.ini"

Here is my Windows boot.ini:
================================================== =======
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microso ft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
C:\bootsect.lnx="Linux"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microso ft Windows 2000
NTFS" /fastdetect
================================================== ========
I have two Windows partitions (one fat, one ntfs) and I made the fat
one on hda1 the default. (I may experiment with making Linux the
default.)
I put the Linux boot line second on the list.

I still get an error message if I try to boot windows 2k via lilo.
Hence the above lashup.

Not at all, the question is, why don't you reply to the OP, but
instead to the correct answer, while snipping away anything?

Let's see, I'll try getting the runlevel from 'chkconfig', like
you said it would do the job:

chkconfig --list lm_sensors
lm_sensors 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off

chkconfig lm_sensors ; echo $?
0

Well, I know now it's running, so the box should be in runlevel
2,3 or even 5, but I can't tell for sure and someone might have
started lm_sensors in another runlevel manual, so it doesn't tell
me anything about the actual runlevel.

On the other hand:

runlevel
3 5

Tells me I'm in runlevel 5, exactly the info asked.

Hi Glenn,
Few things might have happened.

1. The file was not downloaded completely.
2. The CD was not saved correctly on the CD.

You can do a few things:
1. Get the CD on the Computer, and look into the CD.
2. Open the Windows explorer (assuming you are on windows) and view the file
size of the OpenOffice.org installer.
3. You will see the total file size, this should be: 99mb

If the file is smaller, then the download was not finished and you burn an
incomplete file. You will have to re-download it and also verify the
installer at least run it after (even if your computer already have
OpenOffice.org) to ensure it will run.

The other option is that the CD was not saved correctly. This is common when
the burner burn at a very high speed. This high speed makes older CD-ROMS to
not be able to read the DATA.

The advisable speed for machines that are old (before 2001) is 8x-12xspeed
to burn. Please re-burn it, or test the CD on another machine.

I hope this explanation will let you know what went wrong.

Hi Cristi,
OpenOffice.org is commonly used across many Romanian companies that develop
software. This is because as opposed to local businesses, international
companies do have to pay for license. For this reason they can get a full
backup of using a free software license office suite.

free software can be bundled with support and usually the price is added to
the support. OpenOffice.org doesn't govern this proposals so you might want
to check out the romanian community for more information for Romania.

http://ro.openoffice.org

That is the link where u can get the romanian version of OpenOffice.org and
also the status on support for romania.

I have a document set up to use the Navigation with Heading 1 as well as other styles assigned to outline levels 2, 3, and 4.  I use a style separator for long titles and that works great.  However, in trying to use non-breaking spaces and hyphens (instead of line breaks) for headings that are multiple lines so they aren't broken in TOC, field references etc..., the Navigation Pane omits them and they look like mistakes; they display properly in every other circumstance.  EX: Sea-Level-Static Conditions appears as SeaLevelStatic Conditions.  The non-breaking spaces do not present a problem.  Is there a reason they don't and if not, is there any other alternative besides line breaks?

MS Word 2010

Posted: 08 Jun 2013 09:02 AM PDT

After setting MS Word 2010 I tried a test sheet by typing several lines. I didn't like the spacing that was given, by hunting I found a way to get single spacing. I did not save the document, I 'Xd' out of Word. Now, whenever I first click on Word it comes up with that "test" sheet and I must delete what I had typed in order to create a new document and save it. The saved doc. is fine, but I always get that 'test' sheet when I first open Word. There is nowhere for me to find and delete that sheet.

I know this may seem a bit confusing, but it's the best way I can describe it.

Works Suite 2005 UK

Posted: 18 Nov 2004 05:42 PM PST

Gee, thank you Kevin, for reference and informative response! That was
quick. :)

What I can not understand yet --

1) why does Microsoft UK site not list the latest version of this product to
be 2005, like it does with, let's say, AutoRoute? This confuses people into
believing that Suite 2005 they find on the Net, can be, indeed, just a typo
of vendors.

Having not seen Works Suite 2005 reference on a web site, I would quite
expectedly not search for the product out there, as I suspect some
components could be OLD... Neither did Google find it;
AND Amazon.co.uk added to confusion, listing delivery date as 15-Oct-2005
and "accepting pre-orders" only.

2) Another question is - how comes it was out in Aug/Sept, if Money &
AutoRoute were updated quite recently? Does it mean that Suite was delivered
with OLD components?

(I own Money & AutoRoute 2004 and would really hate receiving my order for
70+ quid just to find that there are same good ole components I had paid for
a year ago...)

*** Is there anything an MVP can do to expedite Microsoft to update their UK
Website -- to reflect proper versions of Works Suite 2005 and all its
components? I'd be keen to buy the Suite provided that I'm 100% sure it has
ALL the NEW components (2005 editions).

How to save calendar entries

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for posting info about Works 8.

You could also Export the appointments you wish to keep to a backup drive.
Save them as iCalendar (the default for Works 8) or vCalendar (the default
for earlier versions) and you will be able to import them later into Works
Calendar or any other calendar program that supports iCalendar or vCalendar.

This way may be preferable if you will be using a different version of the
software. The .wcd file isn't compatible between versions. The first time
you run Works 8 after an upgrade, it goes through and brings the .wcd file
up-to-date. If you try to copy an old .wcd file into an existing Works 8
installment, you may run into some problems.

Hey Kevin ... Thanks for the response.
I took a clue from another post and found LTKRN13N.DLL in another directory
on this machine. Actually, there are 4 different versions installed in 4
locations! I copied one to the Works directory ... Result: a new error msg
.... LTFIL13N.DLL missing. Same procedure ... found 4 versions ... copied one
to Works. Another new error ... sorry I don't recall the file name but I also
found it. When the third file was copied to the Works directory, it worked!!

I beg to disagree.
Although I concur, opening an MSWorks Database in excel
defeats most purposes, I do have one Excel workbook
that I use as a purpose designed Database, because I like the ability to sort
up to 65,000 records, dropped in from Works.

It is not ideal, but it can be done.

The Microsoft Internet Mail and News and Outlook Express programs do not come with a spell
checker. They will use the spell checker from any of several Microsoft 32-bit
(Win95/98/NT4 specific) programs. If using Works 4.0, a registry change is required. The
Works 7 spell checker is not compatible with Outlook Express. There are also some
freeware/shareware spell checkers that may work (see the URL in my signature).

Opening a *.dbf file

Posted: 07 Nov 2004 01:46 PM PST

Yep, I've archived your post, but realistically, I cannot see how
exporting to a relational db is helpful.
I have often wanted MSWorks to open more records in flat file
and I notice opening 90,000 records in dbfview is painfully slow.

So I guess the default of 30,000 records for works is still relevent
albeit I have a dinosaur 366 celeron.

Other advice was to open in Access, and set a limit to 60,000 records.
I am not sufficiently versed in Access to do this.

Cheers

| Glad it helped.
| BTW at http://usuarios.lycos.es/scratchupload/ they have a copy of Lotus
| Works Ver1. I had used it for years and still keep it handy. It's an early
| Suite type program and it has a relational database and macro capability..
| The Word processor and Spreadsheet of course were quite primitive.

Editing personal dictionary

Posted: 05 Nov 2004 09:04 PM PST

Corrected (NoteBook to read Notepad) and added (click Options) to Microsoft
Word. See below......

Hi Chuck,

Re: Proofing tools...

CUSTOM.DIC is the file used by my Microsoft Works Suite 2001.

As it is shared with my (OE) Outlook Express version 6.0 I find there is an
"Edit custom dictionary" button there. Open OE, click Tools on the menu
bar, click Options, select the Spelling tab.

Or I can open my Microsoft Word, click Tools on the menu bar, click Options,
then select the Spelling & Grammar tab, select Custom.dic, clicking
Dictionaries... will get me to an Edit button.

Or I can search for custom.dic then open with Notepad. Note: Custom.dic is
in the Proof folder which is in the Microsoft folder which is in the
Application Data folder. The Application Data folder is hidden on a
WindowsXP operating system, so when searching for custom.dic one has to have
"Show hidden files and folders" ticked.

Open Folder Options in the Control Panel, selecting View tab will display
where "Show hidden files and folders can be ticked. Or open My Documents,
click Tools on the menu bar, click Folder Options.

Warning: when in Custom.dic do not add words, just delete the ones you do
not want.
