Dale, Hi, thanks for your reply
I checked, and it is set up as a recurring task with a 1hr duration
every Tuesday.
I created it using insert recurring task.
I wonder if I have altered something elsewhere - would levelling make
this happen, would changing the task type to fixed units and effort
driven on other tasks make this happen.
Now that this has happened, how can I change it so that it goes back
to being just 1hr on a Tuesday?
Many thanks

Urgent - lag time

Posted: 11 May 2004 11:31 PM PDT

What do you mean by saying the "purchase software" task has a fixed duration
of 20 days? Are you saying that once it is ordered you expect it will be
delivered in 20 days? I tend to like the idea that the task is limited to
the actual physical work. If it takes 3 hours to fill out the purchase
order and get it signed then call the software vendor and place the order,
then you wait 3 weeks for delivery and then you'll install it, the "order
software" task is not 21 days. The order task is 3 hours in duration
followed by a 21 day lag time waiting for delivery and then the installation
task. So the project plan would show "order" with a duration of 3 hours
linked FS to "install" and a 21 days lag time in the link to position the
install 3 weeks after the order is placed.

Resourse units keep changing - MSP2003

Posted: 11 May 2004 02:42 PM PDT

Actually people can be more than 100%. If I have 5 people on the custodial
staff and their skills are essentially interchangeable, I can show them in
my resource list as a single entry with a max allocation of 500%. If it's
assigned to a task at 200% that means I have two custodians working together
on the task. That's why you can't tell project to never exceed 100%.

As to why your assignment seems to be locked in and MSP won't let you change
the 200% to 100% that's a bit of a puzzle. Have you posted any actual
progress to the task?

Calendar Report by resource

Posted: 10 May 2004 10:40 PM PDT

Hi Gerard
I always read your responses on the site. You have taught
me a lot about MS Project. Much appreciated.
Re this query- I have created a new calendar (copy of
standard) and based specific resources on the new calendar.
The Base Calendar report then displays a calendar per
page,as you say.
However I can't see information about a particular
resource in the view/report.
I can use the View/ Calendar - which shows the tasks and
milestones in a month view, but doesn't indicate which
days the resource is unavailable. That view would be ideal.
I have a respool of about 70 - and leave/ sick days /
training is recorded by team leaders.
I want the team leaders to ensure the details in the read-
only respool are correct,
I need a way of showing / displaying individual resource
calendars to enable team leaders and the project office to
know if the details they have recorded are correct,
hopefully without repeated separate interrogations of the
Respool.
Would appreciate further guidance.

Summary Task Slack Discrepancy

Posted: 10 May 2004 09:36 AM PDT

Hi Mam

That is exactely whats happening, it's good to know that it's supposed to do
that, what I can't figure out is why. The second task is dependent on the
first and neither of them have any slack so why does the summary task show
it as having a days slack?

If you could shine a little light on it for me it would help greatly

You also want to check with your Microsoft reps to ensure that they haven't
changed their mind about recommended configurations. Oh, and supported.
There was a lot of flip-flop thinking in previous versions as to whether or
not Microsoft would recommend/support boot from SAN. While your SAN vendor
and HBA vendor provide the pieces, ultimately there would be a lot of finger
pointing if you don't have everything worked out ahead of time with all
vendors in the mix.

Does your WINS Server have the 2003 DC as a record yet ?

Exchange to Exchange info transfer?

Posted: 03 Jul 2004 02:06 PM PDT

You could do that, it doubles your work when you move back to a new
server with the original name. Personally, I'd move them just once and
modify the Outlook install point to point to the new server, or create
a DNS record for the old server which points to the new server(after
you decommission it of course) and if the clients have your current
domain in the domain suffix search order, it'll resolve properly.

exchange config question

Posted: 03 Jul 2004 12:03 PM PDT

I think what you're after is to have the client read the existing headers
and convert them to SMTP format when it's forwarded outside of the corporate
system. Else, have it keep the message "normalized" by leaving as it always
looks with friendly names (or GAL display names in this case).

Some background on how those fields get there:

There's two places where the body of the message can get that information
put into it. The client - typical or at the server - atypical in many
cases. Exchange has a way, as Chris mentions to change the resolveP2
behavior, but that's not going to go through the body of the message and
change those that already exist. For example, if alice send bob a message.
bob replies to alice. The current headers look like:
From: Bob
To: Alice
Subj: RE: response to original.

When Alice forwards to com, the headers look like:

From: Alice
To: com
Subj: FW: RE: response to original

And the body of the message looks like:

blah blah blah

-----------------------------------------
From: Bob
To: Alice
Subj: RE: response to original.

To accomplish what you want to do with reliable results, you need to
basically write a program that for every outbound message looks in the body,
and tries to discern the recipients from the GAL and rewrite them in place;
that would be very expensive in terms of computational power IMHO. You
could optionally modify the UA templates to include that information but it
would include that information for all messages and would be client side
logic (which it is partially today.) The resolve P2 is for inbound messages
and tells Outlook to display the SMTP address vs. resolving the P2 header to
an incoming message.

Here's a description of the ResolveP2 functionality ICYGAF

Have you checked the Advanced properties of the Ms Exchange server
services for the outlook client/mailbox, what does it say in Logon network security ??
If it is set to None, you will be prompted to login.. (at least in OL2000) if so, set it
to NT Password Auth (or whatever it needs to be in your domain/outlook environment).\
Also, are there domain user login restrictions to certain workstations (check that), and
failed login attempt count, where the actual user account is being locked out
of the domain for failed attempts.. for the domain policy..

Hi Arnold,
I am not sure it is an IE issue. I tired it with Netscape
7 too. What is interesting is that Netscape does not
display the "Client" section of the login screen, where
you select "Premium" or "Basic". Also, any attempt to
login, using Netscape, results in:
"You could not be logged on to Outlook Web Access. Ensure
that your user name and password are correct, and then
try again."

In IE, if I select "Basic" instead of "Premium", things
work except that I loose all the functionality of
the "Premium" selelction.

It's both a key in the Exchange server registry (per server) and an AD attribute (per user).
I didn't test it on E2k3. If you're using a standard AD2000 you have to extend the schema to add this attribute (see Exchange 2000 SP2 or 3).

Unfortunately I have no say in what the client does with their

this to delete the logs OK. However it is a bit of a cludge and I am

He seems to think that using ESEUtil is not the best way to go hence

Outlook client delays

That generally means one of two things:
a) a network problem
b) the server has a problem

For the server I suggest using performance monitor and watching things like
CPU utilization, and RPC counters. If you see high CPU utilization you know
right away that you have a problem and you will need to figure out what is
causing it (anti-virus/anti-spam products are notorious for being CPU hogs).
If CPU is reasonable then check RPC. Check RPC requests and RPC
operations/sec. If RPC requests is consistently higher than 10 you users
will likely get the popup. A combination of high RPC requests + low RPC
operations/sec usually means something is wrong - the server is having a
problem with something. High + high just means it is very busy.

OWA Error 503 - Getting desperate!

Posted: 30 Jun 2004 08:53 AM PDT

Hi PS,

The big thing I see here is the first test you did. You were unable to open
a web page on the BE server from the FE server while it was in the DMZ.
When you did this test I am assuming that you were just trying to hit a
normal HTML web page placed in a default location. If you are able to hit
that same test page from an internal location (other than the BE server
itself) then I think you have an issue with the Firewall blocking port 80
traffic to and from the BE server.

So try the following set of test to ensure that is the case.

1) Drop a plain web page on the BE server
2) Access that web page from the BE server itself = If Success IIS is
working
3) Access that web page from another server/workstation in your internal LAN
= If Success then IIS is server pages correctly to the network
4) Access that web page from the FE server = If that FAILs then you have an
issue with port 80 being blocked between the FE/BE server.

Hope this helps,

Can anyone tell me how to turn on Autotext hover help in Word 2010?  When you type m-o-n-d a little yellow box appears to indicate you can have the computer type Monday for you.  All autotext entries used to do this, which reminded you they existed; now they don't, and you only get reminders for days of the week and other obvious ones you could probably do without.

how do I keep text from moving when I add new text above it?

Posted: 26 Jan 2013 07:57 PM PST

I've been compiling some old text files and I wish to add to them.

The files contain a lot of text and tables, so page layout is essential. However, as I add in new text in upper pages, the lower ones shift (line by line) to accomodate the new lines being generated; I would like to keep the layout the way it is, not keep readjusting every time I add new material.

The pages have headers which are hyperlinked from the table of contents. I'm certain a page or section break before each of these headers (or something similar) should keep those headers at the top of their respective pages, no matter how much text I add above them; for the life of me, I've forgotten how.

I need the 1st page to be on right hand side

Posted: 25 Jan 2013 03:44 PM PST

In Word 2010, my document of 29 pages with mirror margins needs to have the first page start on the right-hand side.  The document has 1 continuous section break between the front matter and the body in order to change page numbering in the footer from i,ii,iii,iv to 1,2,3,4.

I produce a document with that layout every 3 months and the first page has always begun on the right-hand side, until now.

I have compared every setting in layout, footer settings, margin settings, breaks, etc between the current document and a previously created one and can find no differences between them nor can I find any reason for this behavior.  I have not changed the document layout; in fact, when I begin a new issue, I use a previous issue to begin so all the layout settings I worked so long to perfect would be there.  I keep 'view all formatting marks' on also until the document is completed.  There are no unwanted section breaks of any kind hiding in it.

I am completely stumped with this.  For some unknown reason something in the software has changed.  There have been 6 Office 2010 updates installed since I last produced this document.  I even ran the 'repair' process on my Office 2010 Home and Student installation.  No change.  What am I missing here?

I need this layout to work correctly, the document has to go to the printer and I don't have time for this.

Thanks, Sharon

Beth:

I can speak to .pdf. As long as you have the full
version of Acrobat or Acrobat Pro, simply "Print to PDF"
or use the PDF Toolbar from Project Pro.

Good Luck!

Project running on server

Posted: 10 May 2004 02:27 PM PDT

You might be able to do this with Windows Terminal Services but it won't be
possible as far as I know to run MSP from the network in the same way as
apps that give you the option at install to "run from network" or "run from
workstation". MS is pretty adamant about enforcing the "one retail copy,
one cpu box" EULA.

resource sharing

Posted: 10 May 2004 01:07 PM PDT

jlb --

No matter how you state the question, the answer is still no. When you use
a shared resource pool, every resource is shared with every project
connected to the pool. This is the default behavior of the tool, and cannot
be changed.

If this behavior is not acceptable, then perhaps your organization needs to
consider using Project Server 2002 or 2003. Using either of these tools
with Microsoft Project Professional, you can build a project team for each
project using resources from an enterprise resource pool. The resources in
each project are limited to only those you select to be on the project team.
Hope this helps.

How to make a particular filter

Hello,

This filter is a little bit complicate and you have a lot of dates to enter.

MS Project will run as comfortably on Windows ME as any other software does
so there's no reason to upgrade on that account. But WinME has got to be
the kludgiest and least stable operating system MS has released, a classic
study in what happens when the marketing department determines when software
should be released instead of the engineering department. WinXP on the
other hand is a good solid product and if it's convenient for you to do so I
suggest upgrading for that reason.

lead and lag

Posted: 08 May 2004 03:06 AM PDT

You could do a SS link with a *lag* (not lead) of 2 days or you could do it
with a FS link with a *lead* of the predecessor's duration minus 2 days (ex:
if the predecessor is 8 days long, the FS lead time is -6 days, NOT -2
days). Either way is correct, to choose which you use, ask yourself in the
process itself, which end of the predecessor is the determining factor for
the timing of the sucessor, its start or its finish.

Lead time means that successor starts earlier than the link otherwise would
place it, lag time means it starts later than the link would place it.

Hi again,

Regarding your second question can you be more precise as to what you want
to enter when?
The rare two "times", Duration and Work (tied by teh percenbtage of their
tiome (a) reesource(s) are planned to work on it).
This being said, what exactly do you want?

Getting msg "Microsoft Office is Already in use"

Hi Alex:

It might be worth changing that password, just to make sure "they" haven't
cracked it.

It could also be worth asking to see if anyone has been using "Fast User
Switching" on your machine. If the other ID has left Word running, and it
can reach the network, that would do it...

Cheers

Microsoft Messenger Video Conversations for Mac

Posted: 12 May 2007 04:38 PM PDT

Skype video quality is generally excellent, in my experience.

However, the Skype protocol does sacrifice video in favour of audio, and
autio in favour of text. If the connection is struggling for real
bandwidth, the video quality will be "ordinary". I wouldn't attempt Skype
Video if there is less than 256 kb of braodband available (with no other
users or programs using it). A high-band (20 mbps) Cable connection gives
very good video quality.

Cheers

Valid CD key not accepted after installation

Posted: 09 May 2007 05:18 PM PDT

Why is the "Office X" setup assistant appearing? If it is, that's the
problem. Office X will not accept an Office 2004 product key.

I assume that was a mis-type on your part? In which case you could try
re-serialising the product: see the last section of this page:
http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/index.html

Hope this helps

Custom Installation for Office Mac 2004

Posted: 09 May 2007 10:16 AM PDT

Hi,

You can do a custom install of office for the Mac. When you pop the CD in
you'll be offered two ways to install: using the assistant or drag and drop.

You should use the Assistant. You can choose just Excel, but look through
the options to make sure you don't leave out something you might want later
on. For example, if you use equations make sure you take the equation
editor. Take VBA options if you use VBA.

Excel for Mac will run smoothly with your hardware.

The xls file format is supported by Office 2004, Office 2003, and Office
2007. The only problem you'll have if is if you try to use the new format
that's the default (which you can change) in Excel 2007. The Mac converters
have not been shipped yet.

Enjoy your new Mac!

MS Word 2003 and C# - A smarter document possible?

I think you will find that XML is the way of the future.

Yes, you do have to create an XML document and its attendant transform to do
what you want, because you will need to define a namespace.

However, done right the user will not be able to detect the difference
between the Word documents they were creating and your XML version. In
fact, the simple way of doing it would be to save their existing document as
an XML file, and then add your own tags.

To get this to work right, you do have to eat the first elephant :-) After
that, XML will prove to be a far better way to go: and will smoothly
up-convert to future versions of Office, on both PC and Mac.

Cheers
