Where is the Groupwise Archive Location Found

Posted: 07 Dec 2005 06:07 PM PST

Hi,

I'm part of a consulting team migrating 8 hospitals in Northern
Virginia from Groupwise to Exchange. The current way of determining
the Groupwise E-mail archive location is to have a tech physically
visit the workstation a user is logged on, open the client, got to
Tools -> Options -> Environment -> File Location and take a screenshot.
The information is then entered into a spreadsheet visually from a
paper copy.

Apparently they have a tool to convert the archives once they are found
and if we techs find them on the local machine we are supposed to move
them to a Network server.

My question is, doesn't this information, say the path H:\archive\
exist in some text or binary file either locally or on the network or
both and is therefore retrievable for the spreadsheet?

Does anybody know of a free tool to do this? Alternatively I should
mention they have a programmer on staff, can anyone give me
instructions I can relay to him to write a script?

Exchange 5.5 & ISINTEG

Posted: 07 Dec 2005 11:43 AM PST

Paul,

Sadly, it appears that they did not have backups... there are a myriad of
issues with this client and that is one of them.

Yes, we tried eseutil /p prior to the isinteg.

The users are having a few different errors - some users (those that appear
to have 0 size folders) simply get unable to connect or unable to open folder
when they try opening their mailbox in Outlook. Others apparently can open
their email but don't see all their email and/or are receiving email directed
to others.

Right now we found a copy of their priv.edb file from 11/22/05 and have
replaced it in the directory and are doing another eseutil /p. (I've left
the site at this point) - it found some inconsistencies in the scan and was
repairing the database tables when we left.

I know that the short/best solution would likely be to accelerate their
upgrade to Win2003 Server & Exchange 2003... (and that the upgrade should
have been done a few months ago).

I have copies of the EDB as it was this evening prior to my replacement with
the older file as well.

How to search for hidden users

Posted: 07 Dec 2005 10:07 AM PST

We have hidden users under two circumstances. There are accounts and DLs
that we don't want to appear in the GAL. An example is the Black Hole DL we
have for e-mails to accounts that do not exist to prevent NDRs and keep them
out of the administrator's mailbox. Also, when an employee leaves, we
disable their accounts for 30 days before deleting them. This gives
management and others time to review their mailbox for needed e-mails.

In both cases, we don't want them to appear in the GAL when users want to
select addressees...

Can't Send Any E-Mail

Posted: 07 Dec 2005 09:42 AM PST

Hi All,

Thanks for looking into this for me, but guess what - a simple "detect and
repair" seems to have resolved the issue??
Does anyone know if "Detect and Repair" leaves a log of what it did, would
be useful to know what was causing the problem!

Thanks again everyone!

Mark

Thanks for the information. I have tried the Control-K keystroke combination
and I think that will work fine for our needs.

For you, I'd stick with the size thing and the recipient policy,

picks up more. Doing an exmerge would be a big bang approach and the
users would notice and go ape.
Pull the stuff out softly and they'll notice less.

Question setting up Exchange 5.5 Migration test environment

Posted: 05 Dec 2005 06:27 AM PST

Hi Martin -

Thanks for the reply. I had already considered DNS as a potential problem
but went through your checklist anyway.

1. The test network is isolated from the rest of the world except for web
traffic so that we can get to Windows Update and other update sites.
2. The client is pointing to the correct DNS server.
3. We don't use the hosts files. The only entry is for localhost.
4. The correct DNS records exist. (I don't have any MX records in DNS for
the test network but I don't intend to do any mail transfer.)

Now here's the kicker. Yesterday, after posting the problem, I shutdown the
server so that I could image it. I booted it this morning and made sure that
all the Exchange services were running. I went to the client and deleted the
Outlook profile. I then added a new profile and it worked OK - it accepted
the name of the server on the test network. I was able to start Outlook and
send / receive mail.

Now, the only thing that is different today rather than yesterday is that
today all of the Exchange services are running whereas yesterday only the
System Attendant, Directory, and Information Store services were running per
KB article 155216. Would the addition of the Event Service or the Message
Transfer Agent Service have ANY posssible impact on this?

Thanks for any light you could possibly shed on this!

According to documents, it can be used, but it only updates default profile.
However, this is not the case here. It doesn't work even on single
workstations.
