After installing Word 2003 on new computer, lost ability to see multiple files in one instance

Posted: 04 Jan 2015 12:43 PM PST

I had Windows 7 Home Premium and Office 2003 on my old computer.  I got a new computer and installed Office 2003 on it with Windows 7 HP.

Excel works fine but Word does not have the option to open multiple files and see them within the same instance/window.  I am missing the following icons:

How can I get them back?

Thank you.

Transferring Word 2003 templates, with their macros

Posted: 04 Jan 2015 09:20 AM PST

Word 2003:  I have a number of templates with macros stored in the /Templates folder.  they represent years of development.

Word 2010:  I want to use these templates as Personal Templates in Word 2010, accessed by pressing the orange "My Templates" button.

Questions:

(1)  Where does Word 2010 store its personal templates?

(2)  If I open my old templates and save to this folder as *.dotm, will that work, and will the macros still work?

2010 Word not opening downloaded word files on Windows 8.1

Posted: 04 Jan 2015 08:08 AM PST

Hi all,

Hoping someone can shed some light on my problem, I'm out of ideas after extensive googling- no one seems to have a similar issue!

I have Windows 8.1

I installed Microsoft Office Professional 2010

I can make a word document, save it and then open it again.

I recent got emailed a word file, I went to open with Word 2010. The loading screen comes up.. 10 minutes later its still there..

I logged into another computer and opened the files easily- so I have concluded the files aren't corrupt or anything

I have tried a number of ways to open it differently in word, none have worked (by not worked I mean the loading screen comes up for word 2010 but doesn't actually open)

  • Save it to downloads folder and then open it
  • Save it to my documents then open it
  • Download it as a .zip file extract it, then open it
  • Start up word, and open the document from the File> Open Document... route.
  • Noticed they were .docx, so on another computer save them as .doc emailed them back to myself.. still didn't open
  • I have used the Office Fix it tool thing, that didn't work either

Next I was going to uninstall/reinstall, but I cant do that until I get back home this weekend..

I'm out of ideas now!

Any clues?

Thanks! :)

Margins are too large

Posted: 04 Jan 2015 07:11 AM PST

Split from this thread.

Out of nowhere, WORD will decide to dramatically increase the page margins. All of the page margins look correct (and seem to print correctly), but they are wildly problematic on the screen view (almost 20" wide). I've had this happen to me twice now. When it happens, it effects all documents currently opened. So it's not like it just changes one document, it will change any documents that are opened. The only fix I've found thus far is to close WORD, reopen it (to get a document based on the normal template), then open the problematic files, and copy and paste the material into the new file, and then "save as" over the former file. The first time this happened I figured it was a fluke, now that I've had this happen to me twice, I'm thinking something worse is going on here.

Here's a pic of what it looks like on my screen when this happens. I purposefully opened the Page Setup in this screen capture along with the page layout view to show that everything appears perfectly normal.

Office Word Mailing Envelopes Takes Too Long To Open

Posted: 04 Jan 2015 06:43 AM PST

Before I had Office 365, printing envelopes in Word was fast. Now it takes too long to open after I click Envelopes. It takes about 45 to 50 seconds to open every time. I'd like to find a way to fix it, since I use it everyday and it's too time consuming.

Issue Pasting Images in to MS Word

Posted: 04 Jan 2015 01:03 AM PST

Hi,

I am having trouble pasting images in to MS Word O365 Word..

Pasted pictures show sometimes when scrolling through the document, then disappear and reappear.

In print preview the images sometimes show and sometimes don't - if i zoom in or out the images may show.

When i print, not all images are printing.

I have tried all of the below fixes and I am still having issues.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

http://wordfaqs.mvps.org/invisiblegraphics.htm

Word 2010/2013
  • On the View tab of the Ribbon or on the status bar, choose Print Layout view. Wrapped graphics don't display in Draft view.

  • Go to Office Button | Word Options | Advanced: Show document content (File | Options | Advanced: Show document content in Word 2010/2013) and make sure that "Show drawings and text boxes on screen" is checked and that "Show picture placeholders" is not checked.

  • If some graphics are not printing (or not displaying in Print Preview), go to File | Options | Display: Printing options and make sure that "Print drawings created in Word" is checked.

  • On the Home tab of the Ribbon, locate the Paragraph group and click the dialog launcher arrow in the bottom right corner to open the Paragraph dialog; in that dialog, make sure that line spacing of the paragraph the picture is in is not set to an Exact value.

  • If the graphic was inserted using Page Layout | Page Background | Page Color | Fill Effects | Picture (Page Background is on the Design tab in Word 2013, it will not be displayed unless you check the box for "Show background colors and images in Print Layout view" at File | Options | Advanced: Show document content, and it it will not print unless you check the box for "Print background colors and images" at File | Options | Display: Printing options.

  • If the graphic is a "Watermark" inserted via Page Layout | Page Background in Word 2010 or Design | Page Background in Word 2013, it is a picture or WordArt object anchored to the page header and formatted as "Behind Text," so it will not be displayed unless you have "Show drawings and text boxes on screen" checked at File | Options | Advanced: Show document content, and it will not print unless you have "Print drawings created in Word" checked at File | Options | Display: Printing options.

Controlling the paragraph background colour in word

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 11:15 PM PST

Hi

I would like to use styles with background colours to make my headers.

Its easy to make a parapgraph background colour of course. But is it possible to adjust the size of the background? For example so that the background uses the entire width of the page?

In other words, in CSS terms, increase the padding of the paragraph.

I know I can do this with text boxes, but I don't know how to quickly change an entire document with headers to text boxes. Would be easy with styles.

5,000 DOC and 2,000 DOCX Files

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 06:57 PM PST

I have 5,000 DOC files and 2,000 DOCX file that were saved without the "Save Thumbnail" box checked.

Is there any way to open the 5,000 DOC files and save them as DOCX file with the "Save Thumbnail" box checked?

Likewise, is there any way to open the 2,000 DOCX files and save them with the "Save Thumbnail" box checked?

Unreliable draw commands in Word 2013

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 04:15 PM PST

I make extensive use of the Draw commands in Word for creating electrical and mechanical drawings, as well as other types of drawings.  I recently moved from Word 2003 to Word 2013, and I am shocked at what has happened to the Draw functions.   Objects disappear when you try to move them,  objects sometimes cannot be selected, objects distort when some commands are used, etc.  As I continue drawing, I keep finding more bugs.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Extra Page at End of Each Word Document with Document Informatrion

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 03:47 PM PST

I may have caused this problem because I did attempt earlier to make changes to the normal.,dotm template.

Anyway, whenever I print a Word document I get a summary which includes the following:

Filename,

Directory,

Template,

Title,

Subject,

Author,

Keywords,

Comments,

Creation Date,

Change Number,

Last Saved on,

Last Saved by,

Total Editing Time,

Last Printed on,

As of Last Complete Printing (Number of Pages, Number of Words, Number of Characters).

Before this happened. I was trying to edit the template to show the file paths, date, last saved date in the footer.  I was unsuccessful.

You *do* have to uninstall the trial first, then clear temp files & simply
reboot, as the H&S will not simply overwrite the trial

You can keep your earlier version, which may include outlook, if you desire,
and if doing so you should modify the shortcuts, eg Word >Word03. Or you
can, in 2007, save docs in the old format
(NB H&S 2007 doesnt contain Outlook, if you use that)

all worked perfect.

macros in Office 2007 (and in office 2003) with self-signed certificates

Posted: 08 Apr 2008 11:17 PM PDT

Thanks. It is a great info.
How about if a department wants to use a cetificate issued by Verisign or
other vendor? As an administrator how could I distribute that certificate to
the users to use the macros with the least user interaction?
Any possible options would interest me.

Also, is there is way to avoid the import action of the digital certificate
while we are doing a rollout without using a trusted location? Is there a
good scenario for desktop rollout regarding macros that are signed in Office
2003 and will move to a new OS and Office 2007?

I seem to have found a 'sort' of fix.

It seems that creating a brand new Windows user profile, and logging to that
reveals that Office will launch fine. Which must mean the
corrupt/failing/persistant files do indeed exist somewhere within the user
profile. The few posts online I read on this, reveal that no-one has ever
successfully 'fixed' this problem yet.

I really don't want to have to spend God knows how long bringing my new
profile back in line with my old, and I prefer a fix than a work-around any
day, so if anyone can provide a complete list of Office related files which
exist within the user profile, I would be extremely grateful.

If you're going into the Microsoft Office Choice in Add/Remove programs and set the French and Spanish tools to 'not available'

No websites.

If you have a product key, you would need to find someone with that exact
same version of Office. If you have the key and it was for a retail copy of
Office (not OEM), Microsoft can replace your CDs for a nominal charge. If
your key is for an OEM version, you can't install it on another PC, with or
without the disks.

Switching from Office 2003 and Office 2007

Posted: 30 Mar 2008 09:09 PM PDT

I currently have installed Office components from O2k and 2003, together
with Office 2007
The MS reccommendation is to install earliest version first (Versions from
2003 install to version specific folders) update, then install later version
The shortcuts will be replaced by the later version, so you should rename
earlier shortcuts first, eg Word > Word03
Opening a file from explorer will open latest version
You can only install a single instance of Outlook

doesn't know

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 12:27 PM PST

This is the message I receive when I try to open Microsoft Word Starter 2010 or any of my word or excel documents.  What is this and why is it here all of a sudden?  And what can or should I do to fix it?  Should I really Accept all of this?

More Word Starter problems; finding a permanent solution?

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 11:42 AM PST

This past spring, after the death of XP, I began using a new system with Windows 7 and with Microsoft Office 2010 preinstalled. I don't use it often, don't have a log of the problems with it, but can say that MS Office Starter 2010 has never performed well like MS Word used to and it frequently takes forever, or simply hangs up permanently. During the last year, I have performed the repair function (successfully) a few times, yesterday being the latest. Yesterday, even afteran online repair, MSWS still wouldn't open a recently-composed document (and saved on my computer) while offline. I don't yet have an external HDD for backup (although I'm working on that) so don't really want to try the full uninstall/reinstall procedure, as I don't fully understand or trust all the quirks of this new system and am not sure I'd ever get it all back. OTOH, maybe that would make me give up and go to a good, free program with none of these problems....

I have used Excel. mainly for keeping track of rosters which were sent me, and have had significantly fewer problems with that part of the overall program; it normally seems to function correctly.

I have a very slow connection, sometimes want to write when I'm not connected at all, and don't have any need nor interest in saving my documents online. Most of what I use it for is writing simple letters with no eternal links or other fancy features. Some of these will be printed, others just saved for records.  Is there any way I can get rid of the "Click-to-run" proclivities of the program, its need to be always downloading (or uploading?) and make it work more as MS Word did, that is, to work fully and properly when offline?

 Thanks

Speech Recognition Slow in Word 2013

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 10:26 AM PST

Speech recognition is running horribly slow in Word 2013.  It takes a long time to start up, causes the entire program to freeze, and is very spotty in recognizing what I am saying. Most of the other posts here deal with earlier versions of Windows. I am using Windows 8.1, on a Microsoft Surface with 8 GB of ram, a 510 GB solid state drive and an i5 processor.   Word is the only program running, and I am using a USB headset.   Is there a quick fix for this?   Some of the other answers given in other posts involved opening the computer in safe mode or other diagnostics that eventually did not even solve the problem. Does Microsoft have an answer for this such as a diagnostics tool or something similar?  By the way, Speech Recognition does not run slow in other programs such as Excel or Google Chrome (in fact, I dictated this post in Google Chrome).

Envelope printing problem using Word 2013 with new Canon Maxify MB2320 printer

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 09:37 AM PST

I just upgraded from a Canon MX870 All-in-one to the new Canon Maxify MB2320 All-in-one.  For some reason, Word 2013 is printing the return address of a size 10 envelope a full inch to the right of the paper edge.  It is treating the leftmost inch of the envelope as a non-printable area.  If I try to adjust the margins by dragging the margin setting left, it just won't print anything in the first inch.  Canon says it is a Word issue.  I have the latest printer driver as I just installed it.

I want to create a Microsoft word 2013 document in which I will make a form to input customer details like name, contact details and needs. Then i wanna make this document non editable, mail it, and restrict customer from changing it's content and allow him only to input his details in it. Later he will fill this word document on his laptop and send it to me via email.

Now the problem with this is when I send it to the customer and he try to fill it then all the text gets misplaced/overlapped. Plus I don't know how to add drop down list for particular selection and a yearly calender to only select Month and year directly after clicking on it.

Here is the demo document.

Demo Document

Thanks...

EDIT :

I also want to make document with ease of access like after typing his name on line 1 if he hits Tab Key then the cursor should move to next field instead of moving forward by a Tab character. Just like we fill a sign up form on a web page.

Lost Unsaved Documents In Word 2010

Posted: 02 Jan 2015 06:23 PM PST

While closing out various Windows and program boxes, I accidentally closed a Word document before I could even name and Save it.  Despite having the automatic save features enabled, I still could not find it along the various file paths.  There is one document I found that might be it; but I would not know how to open or repair it.  To the left there is no AutoRecover pane to recover the document.  Measures I took include:

  1. Looking for files with the .asd extension
  2. Looking for files with the .wbk extension
  3. Looking for temp files
  4. Looking for ~ files
  5. Checked the Recycling Bin
  6. Using the Recover Unsaved Documents option under Recent
  7. Shut down Word and looked for processes in Task Manager to close (there were none)

So, I did a web search to find ways to locate the lost file and came up with none that worked, unless it is this peculiar file that I cannot open.  What are the repair measures I can take?

How do I get a product key?

Posted: 26 Mar 2008 09:49 AM PDT

Call the computer manufacturer and ask them where they put the key. I would
suggestgoing thru all of your paperwork before doing that.

Problem Converting from Back-up Disk

Posted: 25 Mar 2008 12:03 PM PDT

Thanks for your response Jason. Office 2007 was a separate purchase online
and we paid to also receive the backup disk. I know there is an activation
number but since the backup disk installs as a trial activating by phone is
not an option and the wizard will not show me the phone number.

Computer manufacturers often install a trial version of Microsoft Office.
If you are getting a prompt to type in a Product Key when opening a Microsoft
Office program, it s likely the trial period is over and you'll need to purchase a
license (product key) for Microsoft Office.

The product key affixed to your computer is for Windows Vista (the operating system)
and not for Microsoft Office. Please review the following:

If you purchase the Upgrade version, make sure you have the Office 2000
disk/s handy and don't lose them. You will need them to either install the
07 upgrade onto a new system or on one that you have had to rebuild. No 00
disk, and the 07 install will fail. Of course if you are installing on a
system with the 00 version currently on it you won't need the 00 disk at
that time (only for a reinstall.)

Suppress Post-Install prompts through Office Customization Tool

Posted: 17 Mar 2008 11:48 AM PDT

Updating the latest Admin files allowed for me to disable the Privacy Options
prompt "Opt In screen"

However, Im unable to come up with a solution for the Windows Desktop Search.

I know the following will fix it for the current user:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\O utlook\Options\General]
"BodyEditor"="{00020906-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"
"PONT_STRING"="60,"

My issue is I need to make it so all current user profiles or new ones need
to get this registry key added. how can I go about this?

automount - 2 directories / 1 map, is it possible?

I have used rdist to distribute automount config files and then
launch a Makefile on changed ones. Then I built knowledge
of hosts into the Makefile. When I did it my Makefile had
sections for Solaris, HPUX, AIX, Irix and so on instead of
using the hostname but the principle remains.

I've since switched from rdist to rsync but haven't needed to
trigger a Makefile on each host since making the switch. I
haven't checked if rsync can do that.

If all mounts from the host are effected you could also hack
/etc/inet/hosts and use the same name. Definite brute force
and ignorance approach. Very effective at times when it works.

How to install Debian CD#2 ~ CD#21?

Posted: 29 Aug 2008 11:32 PM PDT

J.H.Kim <com>:

You don't. Consider them repositories of stuff you could install if
you wanted. As Bill mentions, use apt-cdrom to declare them all to
the pkg-ing system.

Now, you can "aptitude update && aptitude install gkrellm" (for
instance). It'll tell you which CD to to put in your reader,
depending on which package you want to install (BTW, you won't need
"update" again until you get new CDs or a net connection).

What are you using to post? Mozilla/Firefox/Iceweasel, or
slrn/tin/elm? Can you find error messages in the system log files
(/var/log/*)? How do you know it's not posted?

Consider subscribing to debian.org (see
http://lists.debian.org), and subscribing to bofh.it
(the gatekeeper of the mail to news gateway, linux.debian.user). In
fact, not doing that last one is very likely your problem. See
http://lists.bofh.it/options/linux-gate
