Office 365 Home Premium

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 02:57 PM PDT

I have thrice reinstalled Office 365 after buying the Military Appreciation Edition of Office 365.  After the second and third reinstalls, whenever I select the MS Word 2013 app or the MS Excel 2013 App, the following error messages come up, the program crashes, and will not load a file - whether I ask for a recently edited one or try to create a new one.  The error message gives no indication of what the problem is and no solution is offered after the crash.  My operating system is currently Windows 81 Preview, Build 9431.

Help please.

Images / pictures not displaying in Word

This is all happening per the default settings from when I received the programs. I've checked community solutions, but none seem to work.

Suggestions for implementing a shared normal.dotm template for my office

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 02:06 PM PDT

I've developed a normal.dotm template for my office to use. I'm looking for suggestions on the best way to implement it. It will be up to me to ensure everyone knows how to access it, so I'm wondering if I need to import it onto each individual computer in the office, or if there's a way of sharing it on our server. I want it to be the default (obviously) for when all staff members open Word.

It includes a custom style set and macros, if that makes any difference.

Cursor has changed size in Word... how do I fix it?

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 01:03 PM PDT

Hello all

The "cursor" in Word, if I am calling it by the right name, has for some reason changed size.  Instead of being the same size as the text I am typing, it is much smaller.  It really throws me off.  I can't find any settings to get it back to normal.  I must have accidently hit something and I just can't figure out what I did.  I am not having the issue in any other Office program.  I am including a screen shot so folks can see just what I mean.

Windows 7, Office products will sometimes make a "copy of" copy of a file. When does it do that?

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 12:37 PM PDT

Office products will sometimes make a copy of the file, entitled "Copy of filename". Happens with both Excel and Word. Just started happening to me with Windows 7. Under what conditions does that happen and can you turn it off?

thanks !

Shading in a table

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 12:35 PM PDT

Can anyone explain why some cell outlines in a table (I am using Word 2003) would turn white, instead of the usual black?  It only seems to happen when I shade and then un-shade the cells (or vice versa) but it doesn't happen every time.  Besides the explanation, I would really like to know how to correct this.

Bad behavior of Mailings

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 11:58 AM PDT

I run Word 2013/Windows 8 on my Lenovo Ultrabook.  The Mailings function for both envelopes and labels behaves badly by seeming to process the address lines as I enter them.  The first letter of the line appears as I type it, but the remainder of the letters/numerals in the line do not appear for 10 to 30 seconds.  Is this a settings problem or something worse?

My Japanese Fonts doesn't work with office 2013

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 08:58 AM PDT

Hello.

My name is Say.
I have purchased Home & Student  Office 2013 last week by download. I have Japanese font pack downloaded for keyboard and I type Japanese daily basis. I also did download free Microsoft Japanese fonts for Office. I can type English without a problem, but when I type Japanese, a box open up at the top left side and Japanese fonts appears there. Also often fonts freeze so I can not continue. It is not working at all. I have to use my email account to write something and cut / past to a page. This should not works like this. I used have office 2007 with different PC, but I never had this kind of problem.

I called Microsoft 3 times and at the third time, a  technician helped me with downloading ( re-install)again. But It is the same situation.
Case # : 1221715065
Seems like PowerPoint is working with Japanese fonts normally, but  Word and Excel.

Please help me with this matter. I have Japanese blog and website. I really need to solve this problem.
I really appreciate if someone can help me.

Best Regards,

skip backstage when printing

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 08:56 AM PDT

I use ctrl+p to print documents in Word.  In previous versions, this shortcut opened the print dialog box.  Now it opens the backstage.  I can work more quickly by skipping the backstage.  It really doesn't provide any value for my use of Word.  I use shortcuts extensively since I do not have to take my hands off the keyboard and this saves time typing.  I am paid to produce documents as quickly as possible and the keyboard shortcuts were very useful for this until Word 2013.  Now certain shortcuts, especially ctrl+p, takes longer since it opens to the backstage, which I don't need.  Often I need to print 2 or more copies of a document.  Before 2013, I used ctrl+p, pressed "2" or however many copies I wanted and then pressed "enter".  Done.  Or I need to print just the current page.  I would press ctrl+p, alt+e, enter.  Done.  Now I have to take my hands off the keyboard, reach for the mouse, fish around until the cursor is on the correct item, click the item to open the drop down box, move the mouse to the drop down option, click it, move the mouse to "Print" and click it.  WHAT A WASTE OF TIME!
I would like to see the backstage itself as an option, not the norm.  Is there some way this can be done?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Can't Eliminate Blank Page after Table

Inserting Documents With Numbering

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 08:32 AM PDT

Hello,

I have a large document that I insert documents into that has numbered lists.  I am wanting the numbered lists to stay as they are when I insert them, but sometimes the numbers act as if it should auto number and the numbers change.  For instance, a document may have points numbered from 1 to 10.  Then I insert a document that has points numbered from 1 to 10.  Sometimes the second document's numbering changes to 11 - 20.  This also happens to lists of points that are lettered.  How do you turn this off and allow me to instert documents with out the numbering and lettering change from one document to another?

I have gone to File/Options and unchecked the numbering option and it is still numbering.

Thanks for your assistance.

I Can't Undo Tabs in Word

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 06:41 AM PDT

When I am typing in word, I have a problem where I can tab text to the right but if I put the cursor to the left of that text and hit the backspace button to undo the tab and move the text back to the left, nothing happens. I have to go up to the "decrease indent" button at the top in order to move the text back but that is such a pain. Also, if I have bulleted lists, I can't delete the bullet points by pushing the backspace button. I have to highlight it with the mouse and then push backspace.

I am using word 2013 and it isn't a problem with the keyboard, since I have tried to fix this problem by swapping out keyboards and it was the same.

Serialized Field

Posted: 27 May 2006 08:15 AM PDT

Hi John,

I think the clue is in Help for serialize.

From help: "Works starts serializing with the next new record you add".

In other words, serialization will start at the place where a new record is
added, all existing records will be blank.
---------------------

If you want to serialize existing records in your existing Field.

Format the Field as General.

Input 1 in the first record of the field.

To highlight all the existing records of that field. Point mouse to first
record of that field, click and hold down the mouse button, and then move
the mouse pointer down until all records are highlighted.

On the Edit menu, click Fill Series.

Under Units, click the unit you want for the series.

If you want the series to increase more than one unit, select the number
that appears in the Step By box, and the type a different number.

Click Ok.

Note If you decide not to use the series, immediately click Undo Fill
Series on the Edit menu.
---------------------------

If all is okay so far you can now format that Field as serialize if you
want. The only thing you want to remember is to start your serialize number
with it's correct number. As explained by Help, "Works starts serializing
with the next new record you add".

Hope this helps,
Ken

Works 8.5 How to set open folder?

Posted: 26 May 2006 10:48 AM PDT

The file save as or open type is something we dont have much control
over. To choose *.* just go all the way down in the open dialog and
choose "All files". This will display all the files in the drive you
want to open even if works Word processor cannot open them. Is this
what you are looking for?

I would suggest not changing the list as that might be dangerous and
lead to data loss.

was: Uninstall Works 7, delete the Works folder from "Program files (x86)",
reinstall Works 7. Everything works normally, if I open a WPS document in
Word I get a warning about a possible malicious document which I ignore
because I know the document source. Usually I'll open Works for viewing
documents that were saved in Works.

Hi Jim,
After some research, here's some info for you:
1) A full installation of Word 2007 installs the latest Works converter
(Works632.cnv), which includes some DLL's from beta Works 9.
2) These Works 9 DLL's have the same name and location as their Works
6/7/8/8.5 counterparts, meaning that the old Works DLL's get overwritten
with their Works 9 counterparts.
3) Some differences in Works 9 cause these newer DLL's to be incompatible
with the older versions of works, so the system loader complains about
missing exports when trying to run the program. As a result, the Task
Launcher is the only Works app that will run (it doesn't have the dependency
on the files that get overwritten).
Works can be restored via the following steps:
1) Start Office setup in maintenance mode
2) Uninstall the Works converter (the rest of Office 2007 is fine)
3) Uninstall Works
4) Reinstall Works
Note that this will mean that Word will not be able to read WPS files. At
the moment, I don't know of any way to fix this (I haven't tried it with the
old converter from the web site, but I don't think it will work).
HTH.

DELETE

Posted: 24 May 2006 11:25 AM PDT

If you have deleted it from the drive it will not be visible in the
works folder. If you are seeing the file in the Works task launcher,
then you will have to delete the file, double click the file name in
the history of the launcher and then approve the removal of that record
from the task launcher history list.

Does this help. please reply if you have any Questions.
Thanks

Hi Jim,

The cleanup utilities provide one to return their computer to a original

As you still have problems I can only assume it is not caused by Works.

You might try searching this news group at Google for Font Cache, perhaps
one of their suggestion may help.

Good luck,

You may have a corrupted install of Works. I looked at my Works 6, and
wkssole.dll does have an entry point of _MatGetObjName@8

I'm guessing that you are trying to start the spreadsheet from the Task
Launcher. As a temporary work around, try starting the spreadsheet
program directly it. It's typically located at

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\wksss.exe

You can create a shortcut to the program. Starting wksss.exe directly
should open a blank spreadsheet.

su - username -c '/usr/bin/ls &'

will start the ls command in background for user 'username'.

The '-' after su will set up the environment for that user, e.g. make
$HOME point to username's home directory (this depends on the shell
configured for username).

If you need additional environment, you can use the 'env' command:

su - username -c '/usr/bin/env EDITOR=/usr/bin/vi /usr/bin/crontab -e'

will edit username's crontab.

I hope this gets you on the right track.

Specs for a super-cheap, super-small httpd server

Posted: 01 Mar 2005 09:54 AM PST

Hi,
For a Touchscreen solution try MagicTouch addon kit, it can be used with
LCD and CRT monitors and it acts as a mouse. Of course, it will work
with Linux.

There are version available with USB and serial ports (i definetly
recommend the serial so you wont have problems with drivers etc etc.)

I used one for a Restaurant POS system once (long time ago...) and it
was really nice.

http://www.magictouch.com/addon.html#monitor

There is also another brand, Elo Touch, ( http://www.elotouch.com/ )
Which also works linux, they provide complete Touch enabled Monitors
(LCD and CRT). It may be useful.

As for the external HD, I am not pretty shure, I myself have a IDE drive
connected to my laptop via an external adaptor similar to this:
http://www.usbgear.com/computer_cable_details.cfm?sku=USBG-35K&cats=131&catid=131).

I dont know about supported brands but, I think mine is not a special
brand and it works (it recongizes the disk as /dev/sda) of course it is
USB 2, now, I will strongly recommend to use internal because of the
speed/transference rate, and, well, any IDE-HD will be cheaper than an
external HD (or Internal HD + adapter).

Now, about the X-window / web browser in the server, I would sugest
avoiding X-window unless it is really necesary, if you only need X and
the web browser to configure the server I think it is not neccesary and
you can even run it just when you need it, that way you wont waste
resources by running it all the time (i.e. dont start it at boot).

If you want it to be another client machine for your intranet, well, I
think it is better to leave it alone as a server, that way, you may not
need a monitor! (dedicated) and after setup, you can control everything
from ssh and/or web interface.

Mmmm. well, anyway if you are going to use a Touchscreen, then you
*surely* need a monitor ... i think i just let my mind wonder a bit.

Cheers!

Upgrade kernel 2.4 -> 2.6

I tested upgrading from Woody to Sarge to Ubuntu without any problems,

That is true, alas in this case there is someone who installed Knoppix.
I think it is rather safe to assume that he is not a seasoned Linux
user/admin, which is why I wouldn't recommend upgrading the kernel to a
new minor version at all (especially not with a vanilla kernel). A new
install with a "real" distro is much safer for a (kernel upgrade) newbie.
Having said that, I successfully upgraded RH from 2.2.x to 2.4.x and FC1
from 2.4.x to 2.6.x manually by following the instructions given on quite
a number of sites.

Also, you might want to look at top to see what of this is already paged
out. I find top to be much more useful than the gnome system monitor.

Problem setting up Suse 8.1

Posted: 28 Feb 2005 12:23 AM PST

Thanks for the reply, but I am installing the older version because
that is what I have and for the reasons told above( support for older
hardware). Infact this is evident from the fact that I had tried
installing Suse9.1 on my system but my sound card (Terratec SoundFusion
5.1) is not supported / doesn't work properly in Suse 9.1 while in 8.1
it works fine.
Anyways I have manged to install Suse 8.1 on my system. What I
did was I had swapped the IDE cables. Previously my hard disk and
cd-writer were connected to Secondary IDE and CDROM was connected to
IDE1. I had simply put the CDROM on IDE2 and hdd and cdrw on IDE1 and
it worked fine. Previously I even had problem installing WinXP on my
pc. During installation BSOD used to show up with error : PAGE_FAULT in
NON_PAGED_AREA.
I don't have any clues but if somebody can explain the above
behavior then I would really appreciate.

I had a problem with this on my Dell Inspiron 1150, are you sure that

the i830 or the 915. This probably is not the case, but if you do

Addresses in MS CRM

Gill,

While those addresses appear on the main forms, they are actually stored the
same as the "More Addresses", they just get a diffrent address sequence number.
They just chose this route to provide access to the "primary" addresses for the
account/contact.

When are the internal addresses used? Can I reuse these fields and

losing functionality?

Product Catalogue Vansihed from Settings

I would uninstall the Great Plains integration if you isntalled htat. It will
disable access to the Product Catalog. The other thing to checl would be that
your admin user also has a license assigned to it. For some reason, product
maintenance requires a license whle others areas do not.

Adding additional fields to table

Posted: 21 Jul 2004 03:47 PM PDT

Thanks Matt

Actually I think there is a limit on the number as well as the combined size
of the columns: 1024 columns, not to exceed 8060 bytes.

The number of columns is not a real limit but, as you point out, the
combined size is. Here are some stats on some of the common tables:

Account: 63 columns with a combined size of 2617K
Contact: 80 columns with a combined size of 6996K
Contract: 55 columns with a combined size of 4994K

This doesn't leave a lot of room for customization.

I guess the main point here is that you really have to put a lot of thought
into how your existing data will map to the new system.

while you cannot limit a users ability to export to excel expect by changing

Hi Julian,

Thanks for your response.

I would not in anyway disagree with your statements about
how customizable the CRM is or how well you have gotten
to know the CRM.

I have written operating systems, compilers and
interpreters, Database management and 4GL products for
over 25 years so I have no problem in understanding how
the system can be customized by custom programming using
the SDK. However...

I am talking about some basic design flaws in the
architecture of this product after an "out-of-the-box"
install.

1. Poor outlook integration. Email with a CRM:{...}:MRC
tag in the subject line does not always attach to the
contact record when being replied from outlook "unread
Mail". Result -- lost email. Additionally, relying on
such a tag in the subject line is open to editing by
recipients. For some reason the Exchange email router for
the CRM does not appear to work properly -- "out of the
box" - if it did, then all incoming and outgoing email
for a contact would be attached to the contact correctly.

2. No office 2003 integration. Let me explain. Suppose I
select a contact record and I want to write a letter to
that contact. If I do that, then the letter is not
associated with the contact. I have to manually create a
note and attach it. duh?

3. The Quote system does not allow multiple line items
(InfoPath does this beautifully as does Excel), and the
output is awful. And... There is no way to email the
quote to a contact while on the contact record.

4. No built-in "alerts" such as those handled by
Sharepoint (a great product I may add). Why must this be
done in custom programming? This is a basic requirement
for effective Sales Management.

5. "Notes" attached to contacts are limited to 2000
characters. Every time a conversation is recorded for a
contact, a new note has to be created. When viewing the
contact form, the notes are all closed so there is no way
to view a history of conversations without opening each
one in turn. For sales management this is very very time
consuming. This also causes a problem with importing data
from other systems e.g. Lotus Notes, which has no such
limit imposed. It is common practice in these systems
to "annotate" conversation history e.g.

** BM 20/7/2004 -- Called Julian

6. The Microsoft website has a great deal of marketing
information on the CRM, that's what I used in making my
decision to purchase.

Yes I can do that but I'd like to keep all the info on one page.

I can also change my resolution so more of the form displays on the page.

But these are work arounds for a really fundamental problem: a page won;t
fully display in the loader. I thought there would be a proper fix for the
basic problem. Maybe in the next version.
