That's OK, Gordon.....

I was able to "Save As" in the method Sue referenced when

I am SO frustrated and hope there is an answer out there!!

Bye!

Why does Office 97 not work after installing Windows XP SP2?

THAT was rather uncalled for - this person is just doing his job - no need
to jump down his throat. If you would like folks to just post the URL to
the MSKB, say so and leave the personal attacks out of it.

I am sure that approach would be more likely to produce the result you want.

RESOLUTION:
================
OFF2000: You Cannot Update Office to SP2 Without Installing the Outlook
Security Update
View products that this article applies to.
This article was previously published under Q299798
SUMMARY
When you apply the administrative version of the Microsoft Office 2000
Service Pack 2 (SP2) update to an administrative installation of Office
2000, the Outlook Security Update is automatically applied. There is no way
to apply SP2 without the Outlook Security Update.
MORE INFORMATION
The administrative update files for SP2 are Windows Installer patches (.msp
files) that you apply to your administrative share by using a command line
with specific parameters. The Out2kmst.msp, Pptmst.msp, and Excelmst.msp
files update the registry, and the Sp2admin.msp file updates the files on
the computer.

You cannot omit the installation of the Out2kmst.msp file (even if you do
not want the Microsoft Outlook E-mail Security Update) because the
necessary registry updates are contained in the file. Updated versions of
all .msp files must be applied to the computer for the upgrade to succeed.
If you do not apply all .msp files, you place the Office 2000 SP2
Administrative image in an unsupported state.

For additional information about deploying Office 2000 SP2, browse to the
following Microsoft Web site and refer to the Microsoft Office Resource
Kit:

All your response did was enable a dysfunctional game for two to play.

Your response was humorous? Well, it went over like a lead balloon,
like deciding to pat an angrily barking dog on the head has a reasonable
chance of pacifying the dog rather than getting your hand bitten.

Your response baited him as could well be expected and now you
want to pretend to be the victim. And I am quite surprised that the
corporate Microsoft entity which is composed of human beings making
judgments failed to produce guidelines about ignoring John.Doe posts
instead of fueling the fire with your supposedly "humorous" gibe.

This is not the first time I've seen you choose to defend the faith against
troll attacks. It is considered codependent to engage in such behavior.
Your response was either a lie or you are far out of touch with reality.

It annoyed me to see you claim your subtle retaliation was justified
and "above" his tactics. You poked him to see him squeal. Since when
does a corporate entity not follow instructions made by human
authority which have moral/living consequences for an entire culture?

You attempted to represent MS as an "inanimate object" which is
not responsible for its decisions, and that John.Doe was directing
his animosity towards such an inanimate object, when in fact he wrote:
"I do not beieve in enriching rich jerks!" which is a personal perspective.

I might condemn the Alcohol Industry for promoting alcohol to teenagers
which led to Mothers Against Drunk Driving just because I may not know
the names of the individuals involved who decided to target their
advertising.
I may also want to condemn the Tobacco Industry for tempting people to
smoke when the directors knew that it would cause cancer. Because
corporations enclose those industries does not make the corporation
innocent because it does not have a personal identity since its polices are
determined by humans who have faces and names.

So there is nothing wrong with using a corporation name as a shortcut to
meaning the people who are responsible, though I may not know their names.
Your post twisted this legitimate choice.

John.Doe certainly appears to be a woman hater. I see nothing wrong with
your rejecting such a view. But his view and your response to it don't
belong on this forum. As an MVP, you are not above setting a standard
on this forum, but I believe should demonstrate a policy of non-response
to trolls. You do the same thing on other occasions. The degree that my
post is off-topic and cluttering up this newsgroup has been encouraged
by your example. I think as a representative of Microsoft you should act
with professionalism and keep your personal issues out of your responses.

Incidentally, I am not an MS basher. I think computer progress would
be at least eight years lagging in its appearance to the home user if
Microsoft hadn't propelled computer usability and hardware advancement.

I don't want to read your crap any more than John.Doe's crap,
and if you think my post is crap, it was toppled by your dominoe.

Installer Configuration Errors

Posted: 29 Aug 2004 07:48 AM PDT

Chris, Garfield, and all who find the same behaviour:

Methods 1&2 (registry changes etc) did not work as
discussed in:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=265194 "OFF2000:
Windows Installer Appears Every Time a Program Is Started".

The only method I have found that will work is:

Method 3a Modified (Kenn:

I discovered this when Access was fixed using the third
method, but Winword and Excel still displyed
the "Installer applet" every time they were started.

NOTE: If the original installation was from a network
drive, you MUST disable the network interface or Office
2000 repeats the same mistake again and again!

Instead I:

Reinstalled Microsoft Access, AND Word AND Excel
(one at a time with reboot between each correction to make
sure registry was updated)
(and/or any other misbehaving office 2000 program)

To resolve this problem, rename the Msaccess.exe and
System.mdw files, and then reinstall Microsoft Access. To
do this, follow the steps for your computer's operating
system.

NOTE: By default, the Msaccess.exe file is installed in
the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10" folder,
and the System.mdw file is installed in the "C:\Program
Files\Common Files\SYSTEM" folder.

<<<< THIS WORKS

Method 3b: Reinstall Microsoft WinWord

To resolve this problem, rename the Winword.exe file to
OLD_Winword.exe, and then click on the Winword icon in the
START > PROGRAMS folder, this will kick off the install
procedure, you will be prompted to insert your original CD
and then it will correct the problem with Winword. To do
this, follow the steps for your computer's operating
system.

Method 3c: Reinstall Microsoft Excel

To resolve this problem, rename the Excel.exe file to
OLD_Excel.exe, and then click on the Excel icon in the
START > PROGRAMS folder, this will kick off the install
procedure, you will be prompted to insert your original CD
and then it will correct the problem with Excel.

================================================== ==
To do this, follow the steps for your computer's operating
system.

Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0:
Quit all instances of Word, including Microsoft Outlook if
Word is selected as your e-mail editor.
Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or
Folders.
In the Named box, type Msaccess.exe.
In the Look in box, select your local hard disk. (If you
are running Word from a network server, select an
alternate user template location.)
Click Find Now to search for the file.
For each occurrence of the Msaccess.exe file that appears
in the Find program, right-click the file. Click Rename on
the shortcut menu. Name the file a new name, such as
OldMsaccess.exe or Msaccess.exe-1.dot, and then press
ENTER.
Repeat steps 3 through 6 to rename the System.mdw file.
On the File menu, click Close to close the Find dialog
box.
Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Microsoft
Access. If you are prompted for the application CD-ROM,
insert the CD-ROM, and then click OK to continue the
application Setup.
After Setup finishes, start Microsoft Access.
On the File menu in Microsoft Access, click Exit to quit
Microsoft Access, and then start Microsoft Access again.

Use POP3 and Exchange on the same machine

Posted: 28 Sep 2004 08:15 AM PDT

Mark, thanks for the reply.

I have a SBS2003 server (Exchange 2003 of course..). the domains all have MX
records forwarding mail to the server direcly (well, on an independant IIS
box before I installed this box...) The users were able to send and receive
e-mail directly to/from my server earlier. This is the functionality I need
to allow on this server as well. They will not need access to exchange nor do
I want them to log into my active directory. I just need the server to host
the pop3 accounts and to relay the SMTP.

"Umar Pirzada" <com> wrote in message

The pst is simply a personal folder. Basically you are configuring Outlook
as you would connecting to any ISP. To get smtp to properly relay, you will
need to open exchange system administrator and configure it to relay for
your internal addresses. This is done protocols > smtp > smtp virtual
server. Right click and look through the tabs until you find one with
relay restrictions. You will want to allow relay from your internal ip
range. If you have external users using this, you will want to make sure
that all authenticated users can relay and use smtp authentication on the
client. Be aware that pop and smtp authentication is in clear text.
Therefore, if there are sensitive resources that can be accessed remotely
using these credentials, I would not recommend this solution.

Figure captions defaulted to new format

Posted: 12 Jun 2013 01:05 PM PDT

I have been using Word 2000 for years writing lengthy technical books. My publisher and I have been using the format for captions: "Figure 12.33 figure description". When I insert a caption the prefix Figure 12.33 appears automatically with automatic numbering and I simply enter the figure description. This scheme automatically keeps figure numbers correct with edits and is very convenient.

Today, after working on the current book since last August, when I entered a new figure the automatic numbering defaulted to Fig 274.  That is the 274th figure in the document. This sequenctial numbering existed for all new caption insertions.  I selected Format: Style: Caption: Modify: Format: Numbering. Both the Numbered and Outline Numbered tabs had the None box outlined. Nevertheless, I selected another box, then Customize, but in the resulting dialog there did not appear to be a function for formating the autonumbering scheme. After fiddling, but not remembering what I had done, the format is now Figure 12-33 throughout the entire document rather than Figure 12.33, but the Numbered and Outline Numbered tabs still have None indicated.

I also attempted to locate the template file that my document is using so that I could replace it with a file backed up from my system before the format changed, but I was unable to locate the .dot file.

Suggestions?

Thanks

Hi Stephen,

Findfast was discontinued after Office 2000 and didn't run

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;282106&FR=1

Disabling or uninstalling the Windows XP Indexing Service

Office 2003 explained
http://microsoft.com/uk/office/editions.asp

desktop to laptop

Posted: 28 Aug 2004 10:35 PM PDT

Q. How many times can I install Office 2003 Editions?

A. You can install one copy of Office Professional Edition 2003, Office
Small Business Edition 2003, and Office Standard Edition 2003 on your main
computer and another on your laptop computer for your exclusive, but
non-concurrent use. To install a version of these Office 2003 Editions on
more than these two computers, you must obtain another license for the
program. You can install Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 on up to
three computers in your household if a household member is qualified. You
can work with Office 2003 Editions at your desk and when mobile.

Note: Licenses for the 2003 release of Office acquired preinstalled on new
computers are single-computer licenses that cannot be transferred or
installed on another computer.

Source: http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/prodinfo/faq.mspx (look
under "Installation and Compatibility")

Q. Does Microsoft require product activation for Office 2003 Editions?

A. Yes. You need to activate the software by providing your country/region
name and product identification number, but you don't have to provide any
personal information (such as a name or telephone number).
Learn more about product activation:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/prodinfo/activation.mspx

Source: http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/prodinfo/faq.mspx (look
under "Installation and Compatibility")

Product activation should start automatically when you run any Office 2003
Professional Application for the first time.

As long your copy of Office 2003 is genuine and has only been installed on
the number of computers mentioned in it's license agreement without going
over, then you should be fine.

So no, you may not sell Office, unless you also sell the system.

In addition, even if that copy of Office had been retail you could not have

Newbie Question About Swap Partition

On Tue, 2004-08-24 at 12:33 -0700, Google Mike wrote:

The swap partition will never, ever just change size automatically; you
will always need to manually trigger any changes to it.

No, it will not increase, or decrease; see above.

That depends on exactly how your disk is laid out; if you're at all
unsure, I'd say no. Otherwise, find a local guru and ask them to show
you (not 'do it for you'). Changing the size of the swap partition
generally involves pulling out a partitioning tool, backing up your
entire disk, and repartitioning the drive; unless you really need to, I
wouldn't bother. It sounds like you already have a swap partition that
is easily big enough for anything you'd probably need to do.

The magic formula used to be 'RAMx2', but that's not really a good way
of judging it. The real question you want to ask now is, "Do I need more
than 2GB of memory?", because that's what you've got with 1GB RAM and
1GB swap. Remember, though, that accessing swap is many, many times
slower than RAM. Chances are good you could probably reduce your swap
partition and nothing would even notice, even now before you add the
extra 512MB. Think of swap as 'emergency memory' which the system can
use when it runs out of RAM so that it doesn't completely flake out.

Assuming typical desktop use, an average Linux system, today, generally
requires at least 256MB of total memory (that's both RAM and swap
combined), with at least half of that being real RAM instead of swap;
real RAM is always better than swap, when it can be afforded. With 512MB
or more of RAM, you probably won't ever need more than 256MB of swap.
However, this all depends on exactly what you do.

If you run a lot of applications at once, or applications that consume a
lot of RAM (eg: GIMP, editing a 4000x4000x32bit image), you'll want to
set up a relatively large swap partition, to ensure that the system has
plenty of combined memory for those times that it needs it.

As a general rule, however, don't ever set up a swap partition that is
more than double your available RAM; it's not that it will hurt
anything, but it is pointless. If you have 1GB of RAM, and (therefore,
following the swap=RAMx2 rule) set up a 2GB swap, you have a combined
total of 3GB of memory. Before your system comes anywhere near consuming
that 3GB, it's performance will have slowed to a crawl, as it spends
most of its time paging memory in and out of the swap partition
(remember, swap is hundreds, if not thousands of times slower than RAM).
In fact, chances are good that by the time your hypothetical system has
consumed a mere 1GB of its swap space, it will have slowed down to
unusability, perhaps even acting like it has frozen.

The general rule of thumb I'm seeing today is: set your swap partition
to be equal to your RAM, assuming you have 512MB or more; also, don't
ever bother making your swap partition larger than 1GB, especially if
you have more than 1GB of RAM. And this is only if you're a hard-core
power user who runs applications that consume memory like water. If not,
a swap partition no larger than 512MB is probably more than sufficient.

If you have less than 512MB, the old RAMx2 formula is probably good
enough for most uses.

Personally, I've got my swap set to 1GB, but that's because hard drive
space is dirt cheap nowadays, so it doesn't really hurt. With 1GB of
RAM, though, I've rarely seen it use more than 200Kb of my swap space.
Ever. Even when I *was* editing those huge 4000x4000 images in the GIMP
(to be fair, though, GIMP 2 does a pretty good job of paging itself out
to disk without relying on the swap partition, so this may not be a good
example).

Remember though, real RAM is *always* better than swap, when you can
afford it.

Finally, I'd recommend using swap partitions over swap files, but that's
just me. Swap files just strike me as being too easy to screw with,
although that might just be my Windows bias seeping through.

Thanks for the references below, I usually get as far as "man xxxx" and
anything beyond that and not found by google is an incantation AFAICT.

It appears my problems it that the disk I am duping the image on is a SCSI
and the system on the "acronis backup image" was built before the SCSI
controller was added. I edited /etc/modules.conf and added "alias
scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx" but it seems there is more to it then that. I see
the aix7 drivers in lib/modules... but it still fails to boot. I did go to
the acronis forum and posted much this same question and got no response
yet. I tried the latest version of true image (8.0) and saw a warning that
what I was about to do would require that I have a linux boot diskette
ready. It gave (acronis true image 8) instructions on working with lilo,
but not with grub. In any event I suspect the problem is the scsi
controller being used to boot a linux image that was built with no
controller present.

To my innocent eyes that looks OK.

I contacted the ISP and they suggested putting the following in
etc/resolv.conf

search iinet.net.au
nameserver 203.0.178.191

This was sufficient to get an internet connection up and running.
Fantastic!

If you mean on the desktop in Linux, those files most likely exist in a

At the shell/console, maybe try typing "man konqueror" or "which

type man konqueror, it could well mean that konqueror is on the

You can try the same test for nautilus, which is the gnome file manager.
