Is it possible to send a chosen keystoke to another window from VBA

Posted: 30 Mar 2015 02:38 PM PDT

90% of the time I have Adobe Reader and Word open on two monitors.  Every few minutes I mouse all the way across from Word to Adobe and give it the focus with the mouse, and then click the scrollbar once to page down.  Then I mouse back and I have to click twice in word to page down in my working document.

Is there any way I can make a shortcut to invoke this function from a VBA application?  I have read about Windows Scripting Host (WSH) and the sendKeys method, so is there a way VBA can invoke that? I would want some more logic to enable it to send more than just PGDN, but taken from a WSH script I found in Microsft's doc, this seems to do what I want:

Set shell= WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Success = shell.AppActivate("Adobe Reader")

shell.SendKeys "{PGDN}"

The String "Adobe reader" is always present at the end of the title bar text, so it should find it.  I don't mind ignoring the problem of what to do if there are two Adobe Reader instances open.

Prevent 2013 built in style "Emphasis", "Intense Emphasis" from appearing in old documents as recommended styles

Posted: 30 Mar 2015 10:25 AM PDT

I have several older documents that I have gone through the effort to configure the Styles pane to have exactly the styles that I want.  However, when I open one of these documents in Word 2013, Word 2013 adds a series of styles that I don't want.  These include "Subtle Emphasis", "Emphasis", "Intense Emphasis", etc.  I personally feel this is a conspiracy by the developers of Word to annoy me.  Is there some way to keep these "new" styles from appearing in my old documents, short of having to reconfigure my recommended styles every time I open a new document?

Thanks.

How do I modify the comment card in MS Word?

Posted: 30 Mar 2015 08:30 AM PDT

I am evaluating documents using Word and using the comments option.  Every comment contains information from some "Contact
Card" and it shows that to the readers of the document.  I am not working as that screen name nor do I want any indication of
an e-mail address to be shown.  I tried logging out and it seems to prevent the e-mail address bit it still shown the name on the account.

If I was doing my work from a computer that is not mine, then some other contact card information would be shown.

How do I stop this?

Please Help: Word 2010 Fill in Blank Template

Posted: 30 Mar 2015 07:53 AM PDT

I have a rather long document that has a company's name scattered throughout it. I am trying to make this document a template with a fill in the blank where the company's name is, so in the future I can type in a different company's name and it will be put throughout the document.

Does anyone know how to do something like this?

Thank you!!

Replacing two hard returns above a table with just a single hard return

Posted: 30 Mar 2015 06:25 AM PDT

Hi,

If I want to do this anywhere other than just above a table, then I search for ^p^p and replace with ^p. However, where the two consecutive hard returns appear just above a table, Word will find them, but will not replace them. Does anyone know how to do this?

Many thanks in advance,

Page numbering issue in Word 2007

Posted: 30 Mar 2015 06:05 AM PDT

Everything in my document is working fine (finally), with the exception of a rogue page number appearing where i don't want it. Straight-forward page numbering except i want the page numbering to begin with 1 on Acknowledgments, 2 on Intro, etc. and that is all working fine. But I can't figure out this random page #4 as shown below. Header selection on that page is not linked to previous, different 1st page and different odd/even. Tried changing all of those with no luck. Deleting that deletes all even page nos. throughout. Odd page breaks used throughout to force chapter starts on the recto page and those are all working correctly. Suggestions?

Auto RE-open on re-boot

Posted: 30 Mar 2015 04:08 AM PDT

Good Morning All, I hope this hasn't already been asked as I am terrible at searching for answers 'cause I am so bad at using the right words but I also hope this is an easy question.  All I would like to know is if they is an easy convenient way to reopen an entire list of MS Word files that I normally keep open at all times.

I have nearly 20 MS Word docx files open at any given time and use them constantly for generating my tech posts for several different forums.  I normally just close the lid of my HP Pavilion dv6 and when I open it, all my files are ready and waiting for me.

Whenever there is a Windows Update or any update that requires a reboot, or if it's been some time and I feel a reboot is in order.  I have to go to a folder and reopen each file, one at a time, moving it on my screen into the desired position, and making everything look just as it was before I had to restart my computer.

So I was wondering if there was a command to do that automatically.  A single click that would re-open all 20 Word files in the exact same format I had them in before I had to restart the computer.  Silly, but it would be really convenient and I would appreciate anyone's ideas, thank you

insert chart problems

Posted: 29 Mar 2015 10:31 PM PDT

on a blank document I "insert" chart.

And it inserts looking normal, but when I click outside to continue it sizes to half size.

Initial "insert"

followed by what it changes to when I click outside.

No resizing for changes will effect the "white space" around the actual chart.

Word 2013 FILLIN prompt default to current date

Posted: 29 Mar 2015 10:01 PM PDT

Hello,

I would like my FILLIN field for the date to default to the current date unless the user otherwise changes it. Setting the current date field code in the default box for the FILLIN field didn't work and simply displayed the raw field code.

Respectfully,

Tristan

Hebrew font shows in document and printing as blank squares

Posted: 29 Mar 2015 09:04 PM PDT

New computer, Windows 8.1, Word 2013.  I'm trying to work on a customer's document that has some Hebrew in it.  I have the font that came with Word (David), and another font I've downloaded and installed.  They all show up as squares.  Here's what I've done so far:

  • Tried more than one font--none work.
  • Changed the printer definition I was working with to several others on my computer--none work (my printer always printed just fine in Windows 7/Word 2010.
  • Updated the firmware in my printer (the driver was already up-to-date).
  • Searched for updates/patches to Word 2013--it said I was up to date.
  • Loaded the Hebrew language for Word 2013--keyboard and language/spell-check.
  • Rebooted the computer to see if any of the changes would kick in.
  • Talked to a support person who let me know that even though I've had this software less than 30 days, I don't qualify for support for this problem.
  • Googled for hours and got a "there was trouble signing you in, try again later" error message for Microsoft's support area when using Chrome.

Okay, so those last two points were actually whining--it's been a long day.

Any suggestions?  This all worked so beautifully with my old setup.

old msgraph needed

I have several word documents that have charts in them created with older versions of word (2007/2003).

I installed 2010 and now when I double click them to edit, they actual chart goes to about half size but the place holder is large.

I don't want to use the excel functions because the charts need to be updated through another 3rd party program.

So.  I have to keep the charts via msgraph.   But, when I double click the chart (or they get opened up by the 3rd party software)  they actual plot shrinks to about half size and the place holder is same or larger.

Any ideas on settings or preferences that would prevent the graph plots from resizing when double clicked?

Thanks

If you select the graph and then right click and then click on Format Object, you can use the Size tab on the Format Object dialog to re-size the chart.

After re-sizing a graph in a document, created Word 2003 and opened in Word 2010 here, the size of the graph does not change when double clicking on it.

Hope this helps,

It appears that you have double clicked on the graph which results in this when you right click

whereas, if you just click once, and then right click, you should get:

Excellent, I'll try that and see if I can go forward.

I was only getting this when I followed your instructions, but realized it was in a table.  If I copied and pasted outside the table I finally got the format object.

I'll change and go forward with the 3rd party program inputs, and see what happens.

OK, tried but didn't solve my problem.

When I format (or don't format) as soon as it gets opened and closed it changes size within the placeholder.  I've tried changing size, percentage , lock aspect, etc.

prior:

after formating (and opening then closing)

the graph shrinks and a ton of white space.  Any re-sizing, etc just changes the size of the outer place holder and not graph inside.

Any re-sizing, etc just changes the size of the outer place holder and not graph inside.

That has been my experience with MSGraph objects as well. In your Sample 1 (shrunken), can you drag the chart area to enlarge it?

Or, when you double-click on the chart, can you then drag the hashed border to resize it? I tested this in Word 2010 using a .doc file containing a chart created in Word 2003 (or earlier), and it worked as expected.

no matter what I do. When it reopens it is 1/2 the size of the place holder.

I change in format object the aspect, size or what have you, and when it opens the actual graph is always 1/2 of the place holder.  Even using the drag handles the graph remains 1/2 of the place holder.

double clicking the graph/place holder, it opens up what appears to be the correct size but whenever i click outside to "close"  the graph drops back to half side.

Someone said might be an MSgraph vs Excel problem,  any thoughts of correction.

New line without character (return)

Posted: 29 Mar 2015 08:05 PM PDT

Hi all,

I'm creating a "format notes" document where there will be a table with 2 columns(name and description).

Currently I have programmed a macro so that it adds each row as a new building block.

i.e.

name1 autotext that inserts
name2 autotext that inserts
name3 autotext that inserts

I want the auto text to use the formatting of the active document that they are using it in.

i.e. if font size is 22, insert with that size.

This is done by removing all "return characters" (the backwards P looking one).

I thought I would just have to remove any of these characters at the end of the entry but it seems that any sort of return character in it conflicts with it (i.e. any bulleting/numbering).

I thought of using the Soft return (shift+enter) but it throws the entire format completely off.

Is there any work around for this?

ROLLING SIDE BAR

Posted: 29 Mar 2015 04:42 PM PDT

HELLO:

I am using an HP laptop computer w/W7 Home Premium. I have OFFICE 365 UNIVERSITY. When I go onto WORD and trying to append a document my side bar keeps rolling. I no if I click on to it, it'll stop, but when I am working and trying to move downwards to highlight a particular doc that I am working on, it just keeps scrolling down to the point where it is also picking up other info in the doc that I DO NOT want highlighted. HOW do I stop the sidebar from this 'rolling' effect, where it is quite 'nerve-racking'.

ANY SUGGESTIONS would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS,
