Print window defaults to 2-sided printing despite printer set to one-sided printing.

Print window defaults to 2-sided printing despite printer set to one-sided printing.  This is on a Dell XPS 8700.  On our HP laptop with Windows 8.1 is doesn't do this.

How do I add an entry on the "New" context menu (Win 7, Office XP, 2007 Compatibility Pack) ??

Posted: 16 Aug 2014 08:27 AM PDT

I used ShellNewhandler.exe to put Office XP on my "New" context menu.  All's OK, except I can't get the Word entry to work correctly, probably because of the Compatibility Pack.  The Word entry on the context menu only opens a blank  .DOCX template, and I then have to go thru a lot of shenanigans to get it into .doc format so I can use it (eg, change font, Save As...).  So how do I get Word to open in Office XP (Word 2002) straightaway, not in Word 2007? Thnx (Win 7/64 Hm Prem).

Official Word Starter update?

Posted: 16 Aug 2014 08:23 AM PDT

When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me  there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it.  It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification.  I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it.  There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter.  IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

MS Word 2013 freezes when saving as PDF and printing the document

Posted: 16 Aug 2014 06:31 AM PDT

I'm unable to save the files as PDF and print any document, as the application freezes and doesn't respond. I've been updating Office 2013 regularly with Windows updates, and I still find Office 2013 going unstable.

Word registry settings - not obeying printer properties

Posted: 16 Aug 2014 05:33 AM PDT

This is a really weird one. A while ago I had a little accident with the registry on my laptop and corrupted my user profile. I managed to rescue the situation by using Windows Easy Transfer to archive my user settings to an external disk, deleted the user then reinstated it from the save file. So far, so good. This seemed to fix all my registry problems and everything was back to normal.

That was until I tried to do a two-sided print, two pages per sheet. Word for Windows now insists on ignoring whatever I say in printer properties and instead always prints full-sized and on only one side of the paper. This only applies to Word for Windows (other applications print fine) and it's user-specific. I can log-on to the same machine using a different user account and, using the same version of Word for Windows, print the same file to the same printer and have it come out two-sided etc. as requested.

OK, I admit I am using a very old version of Word (2003 11.8411.8405, SP3) but it meets my requirements and, as a now-retired software developer, I cannot justify the expense of upgrading. My laptop is running Windows 7, SP1. The printer is a Canon Pixma ip5200R. It is not connected directly to my laptop but is connected to a tower PC running Windows XP. I connect to the printer via LAN.

Printing using specific properties used to work from all user accounts on my laptop. It's only since my registry accident that I've had the problem with this one user account so I am convinced it is a registry problem. Has anyone any good ideas where to look for a quick fix?

Unwanted spaces

Posted: 16 Aug 2014 03:45 AM PDT

I was changing selected spaces in a long block of text to pairs of paragraph breaks into a long block of text (i.e., replace 'space' with ^p^p if I were using the replace function), and found that in addition to the paragraph markers, Word was inserting a space before the first paragraph mark, and after the second (i.e., replace 'space' with 'space'^p^p'space').  How can I turn this imbecility off, permanently?

After Windows updates unable to open Microsoft Office applications, Uninstalled/Reinstalled Microsoft Office, Word wont open says Repair Now. Any advice please?

Posted: 16 Aug 2014 02:43 AM PDT

Hi

After recent windows updates I was unable to open Word, Excel, Powerpoint.  My operating system is Microsoft 8.1 and I have Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013.

I am aware a lot of others have had this problem since the Windows Update and followed the advice on the forums to uninstall/reinstall office.  I tried this but I now cannot open Word I keep getting dialog box repair now, when I click it, nothing happens.

Can anyone advice what to do next? Also does anyone know how an email contact address to contact Microsoft to complain?

Thanks for your help in advance,

Grateful for a solution to this problem.

I copy any selection of text from any Word document and paste it into a draft email.  The pasted text appears normal.

However, after I send the email, the recipient (and myself as cc), see the following always and only after the first line of copied text:

<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

For example:

Abcde123<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Fghi456

How do I stop <?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> appearing in my sent emails?

FYI: putting this string into Google shows some webpages where it also appears, eg

Microsoft Word has stopped working

My Word 2013 was working flawlessly, until one time that I tried to open file 'A' and it crashed. Since then it keeps crashing no matter what file I'm trying to

Now, Word's not even opening a New File.

Quotation marks and apostrophes change to Calibri (Body)

Posted: 15 Aug 2014 10:38 PM PDT

Typing in New Times Roman, a document started changing quotation marks and apostrophes to Calibri (Body) and leaving a gap before the opening quotation mark and after the closing quotation mark, and adding a gap after the apostrophe, as in ( "gaps before and after" ) and don'  t.  Anyone know why it's changing just those punctuation marks to Calibri (Body)?

Adobe fonts do not render correctly in MS Word (2013)

Posted: 15 Aug 2014 09:04 PM PDT

Some time ago I purchased as set of different Adobe Caslon fonts and have carried them with me from computer to computer.

They install just fine on my new Windows 7 PC.  However, they will not render properly in MS Word.  They appear in the font box as expected (e.g., ACaslon Regular). If I click on a word and then right click > Font, they will render correctly in the Preview pane.  If I convert the file to PDF, they render perfectly. BUT I can't them to appear properly in the Word document itself.

Any help would be appreciated.

How Do You Spell Relief? I Spell It Office 2000

Posted: 06 Apr 2007 04:45 AM PDT

Calm down emanon. MS makes one type of product and other companies make
their own type of products. It is not up to MS to make its products
compatible with all the products out their in the wild. It is up to the
product makers to make sure its products are compatible with de facto
industry standard OS and Office packages!!.

Don't you think it makes sense for companies to make sure its products
are compatible rather than expecting MS to make sure its products are
compatible with 1000s of products out their? It is virtually impossible
for one company to take this responsibility and moreover, if it does
then anti-trust law suits will stop them from doing so. Do you remember
what happens to pdf convertibility in office 2007? MS was forced to
remove it because adobe objected to it!!

You really need to realistic about your expectations!!

Hope this helps.

Install Office 2000 and Office 2003 on one machine

Posted: 05 Apr 2007 02:02 AM PDT

Hi, Mo,

Install them in order of their release (2000 first, then 2003). Microsoft
does not recommend running multiple versions on the same operating system,
and you can not have more than one version of Outlook. Here is an article
to get you started:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/828956/en-us

Virtual PC is a nice option for running multiple versions, because you can
isolate them and run Outlook in each Virtual PC session.

Problems with Off. Pro Accounting & SQL Server connecting remotely

Posted: 04 Apr 2007 06:06 PM PDT

Hi Chris,

There are a number of factors that can affect the MS Office Business Contact Manager (BCM), including whether or not you're using a
MS Exchange Server. As it can work with the Office Accounting product and that is also giving you a bit of bother, you may want to
followup on the relationship aspect of the two products and describe how you'd like to be able to work with the products in your
setup in the BCM discussion group through the link below.

these products not designed to be run over a network like this?

Thanks, Greg. You may need to contact Microsoft PSS, then, if peer support
isn't of any assistance. If Norton 360 is also doing this, then Office
isn't likely the issue, either, and perhaps it's related to the operating
system.

Event Error 5000

Posted: 30 Mar 2007 02:32 PM PDT

Hi Adam,

Sorry for the delay due to the weekend.

Based on the information you provided, this error may be cause by many
reasons. I have listed some of them for your reference:

* Reason 1: Large .pst or .ost file
===============

Are you using a large .pst or .ost file? If your .pst or .ost file is
larger than 2GB, you may experience a performance issue in Outlook 2007.

In order to accommodate new features, Outlook 2007 introduced a new data
structure for .pst and .ost files. In this new data structure, the
frequency of writing data to the hard disk increases as the number of items
in the .pst or .ost files increases.

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods:

# Method 1: Reduce the size of the Exchange mailbox
# Method 2: Use an online mode profile instead of a cached mode profile
# Method 3: Split your large .pst file into several smaller .pst files
# Method 4: Use a filter to restrict the items that you synchronized from
Exchange into your .ost file

For more information, please refer to the following KB article:

KB932086 You may experience performance problems when you are working with
items in a large .pst file or in a large .ost file in Outlook 2007
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932086

* Reason 2: Windows Desktop Search 3.0
===============

Have you installed any desktop search engine such as Windows Desktop Search
3.0? If this is the case, please temporarily uninstall it and then test the
issue.

If this does not match your situation, then please also try some
suggestions below to narrow it down:

* Suggestion 1: Temporarily turn off/remove antivirus program
================

Many times such issue can be caused by the antivirus program currently
running on the machine. Please temporarily turn off or remove antivirus
application and see if this scenario is gone.

* Suggestion 2: Temporarily remove Adobe Reader
================

Sometimes Adobe Reader can also cause this issue. If you have this program
installed on your computer, please temporarily remove it and see if this
issue can be resolved.

* Suggestion 3: Test in Outlook Safe Mode
================

Outlook Safe Mode can narrow down issues which are caused by any
extensions, corrupted resources, files, registries, or templates.

1. Click Start | Run.
2. In the Open box, type: "Outlook /safe" (without the quotation marks)
Notes: There is a space character between Outlook and the forward slash (/).
3. Click OK.

If all fail, then please help us collect more information so that we can do
further research:

* Information Collection
=================

1. When does the error message appear? What are the steps to reproduce this
issue?
2. Does the produce ever worked? If so, what have been changed?
3. Please take a screenshot on the exact error message and send it to me.
** To take a screenshot
---------------------
1. When this error message appears, press PrScrn key on your keyboard.
2. Type "mspaint" (without the quotation marks) in Start>Run box and click
OK.
3. Click Edit>Paste to paste the screenshot.
4. Save it as JPEG file type and send it as Email attachment.
---------------------

You can send it directly to this newsgroup or you can send it to me at
<com>

Please try my suggestions, and update me with the results and information.
If something is unclear, please feel free to let me know.

There is no way to "completely" remove Office from your system without
re-formatting, unfortunately. Uninstalling via the Control Panel does a
pretty good job, if it works.

I would still suggest you consider trying the steps in the order I showed.
The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility should help you remove registry
references to old versions of Office, and then you can try re-installing
Office to restore them properly.

Just make sure you have all the installation CDs and product keys you need
to re-install before you remove the registry references.

will pick up the other one and give you a choice which do you want to keep
that way your not getting rid of one before your sure the other one is going
to work these machines were built to handle alot to keep up with us people
only they can be tricky at times so just try to be safe rather than sorry
before uninstalling or deleting anything your not certain on. hope I could

simple Q again

On 18 Oct 2006, in the Usenet newsgroup comp.os.linux.setup, in article
<googlegroups.com>, Swingingming wrote:

I suspect that is a typo - should be a '.tgz' file, which is a tarball
compressed with gzip.

Find a command line, and run the command

tar -ztf /path/to/name.of.tgz

making the obvious corrections. Look at the file names it is reporting.
Do they begin with a directory name

[compton ~]$ tar -ztf downloads/arping-2.01.tgz | column
arping-2.01/ arping-2.01/openbsd.h
arping-2.01/Makefile arping-2.01/solaris.h
arping-2.01/LICENSE arping-2.01/arping-2/
arping-2.01/arping.8 arping-2.01/arping-2/install-sh
arping-2.01/arping.c arping-2.01/arping-2/configure.in
arping-2.01/README arping-2.01/arping-2/arping.c
arping-2.01/arping.yodl arping-2.01/arping-scan-net.sh
arping-2.01/freebsd.h
[compton ~]$

In this example, there is a directory name (arping-2.01/) and this means
that the contents of the tarball will be placed in a directory named
arping-2.01 in "this" directory. On the other hand, it might have an
absolute pathname (/usr/src/arping-2.01/ for example) which means that
the files will be placed somewhere else. Lastly, it may be lacking a
directory name, and all you see is filenames, like this

Makefile arping.yodl arping-2/install-sh
LICENSE freebsd.h arping-2/configure.in
arping.8 openbsd.h arping-2/arping.c
arping.c solaris.h arping-scan-net.sh
README arping-2/

which means it will drop the files "right here" (which gets messy). In
this latter case, make a directory (mkdir directory_name), and move the
tarball into that directory (mv tarball.tgz directory_name), and change
into that directory (cd directory_name).

Execute the command 'tar -zxf tarball.tgz' (making the obvious correction)
and then change to the directory where the "new" files are located. Run the
command 'ls' to see what you have, and then start reading - paying attention
to the files in all CAPITAL letters - like README.

Unfortunately, that depends entirely on the instructions that are found
in the tarball. Start with the README and see what it tells you to do.
Make sure this source is meant for your distribution and release. Pay
attention to the kernel version numbers (run 'uname -a' to see what you
have now). You will probably also need the development packages, including
the compiler and GNU 'make'. These are not installed by default, so you
may need to install them before going further.

You may find additional help in the Usenet newsgroup alt.os.linux.mandriva
but I'd suggest you post from your ISP's news server RATHER THAN GOOGLE
because some otherwise helpful people don't see posts from groups.google.com.

It's been a while since I worked with critical paths so I have forgotten
some of the little quirks that might be causing your problem. However,
if you don't mind sending your file via e-mail (zip it first), I would
be happy to take a look at it and give you an answer. With a real file
to review it is much easier to diagnose problems. If the file has
sensitive information, I can provide you with a macro that will
de-sensitize it or you can also go to fellow MVP, Jack Dahlgren's
website at: http://masamiki.com/project/macros.htm
His "scrub" macro is essentially the same as my de-sensitizing macro.

If you can't (or don't wish to) send your file, hopefully someone else

Help!! on - work hour, % complete, Gantt Chart.. etc!

Posted: 23 Aug 2005 08:57 AM PDT

Hi,

1. Tools, Level Resources, put to "Manual" instead of "Automatic"
(And don't change dates of tasks unless you mean actuals. Let Project
propose the dates)

2. Could you be more precise? Putting a task to 100% complete does not
modify anything, it just changes work intop actual work. Besides, once a
task is 100% compelte, you can change about everything without Project
recalculating much.

3. Be sure to save a baseline before entering actuals (because entering an
actual finish will also change the finish date). Then use Tracking Gantt to
visualise the differences;
As for creating custom bars, see
http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs.htm
faq 31. Customizing Gantt Bars

4. That depends on your definition of alert etc.

Technet seemed to allude to the same, from Project 4/98 onwards... is there
anyway to setup a custom field that could display more than the first 256
characters or be searchable beyond the 256 char limit? Or should I just
resort to attaching/linking an OLE object (like an ascii text file) to the
notes field with the data in. I would rather avoid this as it unneccesarily
complicates finding the information.

My personal experience in using scheduling software, Project or
otherwise, is that, for single resource projects, like the ones I do in
my consulting business, don't warrant this kind of software.
Basicially, it's because single resource projects are, by definition
"linear". That is, there is really only one path through the tasks
because there's only one person to do them. With an occasional
exception, say when I'm waiting for a reply from an outside source, I
can't really work on more than one task at a time. If I choose to, I
can switch from one task to the other, but I have a bad habit of doing
too much of that anyway, and try not to switch tasks because it is, by
definition and experience, inefficient. I've found it much more
effective to use a PIM on my computer and tie it to a PDA. I use a
customizable PIM that allows me to link items on my Todo list, so that
when one is done, the next one in sequence pops up. But I just don't
need the complexity of Critical Path Method when I can't really overlap
tasks anyway.
I hope this helps in your world.
