Importing from Excel Project Template

Hi Trac,
Where did you get the Excel template? Without seeing the Excel template, it
is tough to know if the template can be modified with additional information.

You may import any excel spreadsheet into MS Project, but you'd have to map
the fields manually. Depending upon the number of tasks in your project, it
may be more efficient to simply copy and paste or manually enter the priority
information in to the project you imported. The name priority shouldn't be
causing the problem and when I tested a sample import, the name priority in
the Excel file just simply meant that project guessed correctly the field in
import the data into.

Theoretically, resources don't have anything to do with task
dependencies. Forget the resources for the moment. Lay out your tasks
with the order they should occur worked into your dependencies. For
instance, at a high level in software development, you create the
requirements, THEN create the design, THEN generate the code, THEN test
it. After you have all of your tasks laid out and the dependencies
created where necessary (every task should have at least one
predecessor and at least one successor, even if it's start and finish
milestones - any that don't are widows or orphans), then assign
resources and amounts of effort (work). Then you can add resources and
SPLIT the amount of effort (work) between the two resources to shorten
the duration of the task.

Hi Michael,
I'm afraid I don't have many other "guesses" for you. Do you know what the
overhead projector's preferred resolution is? I'd suggest setting your
screen resolution to the projector's preferred resolution, launch project and
see if project is stable. Then I would exit project, try connecting to the
overhead and try launching project again.

Hope this is of some help or someone else leaps in with the "perfect" answer.

The FS link says when the earliest the sucessor can start, barring lead
times, but it could start later. One cause is that it has to wait until the
next working time - the predecessor finishes Friday at 5 and the successor
can't start until Monday because that's the next working time according the
the project calendar. Another cause might be that the calendar of the
resource assigned to the sucessor has him unavailable until some period of
time after the predecessor ends. Or it could be that leveling is set to
automatic and the resource on the sucessor is already assigned to another
task at that time slot so the task in question has to move until he's free.
There may be other ways the successor would end up starting later than the
link would otherwise have it but those are some of the most common.

Hi Dab,

I'm afraid you're not missing something, you must have overdone it.
Because Project is supposed to do exactly what you want.
There are ways to block it though, and you must have gone one of the
following paths:

- Verify whether in Project, Project Information, the option is calculate
from start date
- Verify whether in Tools, Options, Calculation, Calculation is set to
Automatic (as opposed to Manual)
- Tasks with a strong constraint like MUST start or finish do not move even
if there are 33333 predecessors; Finish no later than constraints block the
task once the constraint comes into play.
- Once a task has an Actual Start set it won't mobve any longer. Project
will change your pla, not your history (that is what actual data are about)

Make your choice... it's definitely one of those.

Trailing off in the Notes field on a view is caused either by,
characters in excess of 256 or line feeds or carriage returns in the
Notes text. If you print notes as suggested above, you shouldn't have
that problem.

Another method that I have employed is to use VBA to export the notes to
Excel. If you are interested in that, write me direct.

Custom Fields in the GLOBAL.MPT Template

Yes. The Views and the Tables tabs show the newly created View and
Table in both the GLOBAL.MPT file and the current .mpp file. But the
Fields tab only shows my new fields in the GLOBAL.MPT file. Kinda
strange that the the Views and Tables act differently than the Fields.
Oh well...

I guess I will have to train my users to fix their older existing .mpp
files using the Organizer. I was hoping to avoid that but it sounds
like that is my only option.

Hi,

If your "date including contingencies" can be set as custom firlds (Start7
or Date4 or;..) ontask level, Format, Bar Styles, will allow you to draw any
bar between two of these dates and you will haev a graphic comparison.
The Bar Stylese of the Tracking Gantt may inspire you.

John is right. You can calculate NPV in project, but it would require coding
the entire function from scratch in VBA. Further, you would have to find a
way to model things like revenue and depreciation which Project does not
deal with by default. I'd just use excel. The financial functions are
already predefined there.

With a little work, you can have both a schedule and financial calcs in
excel. See my excel schedule page for a starting point.

I agree with you that materials are infinite, but we still need to know
when to order for new material. Let me give you an example. Now i have
a schedule which spans till 2008. The tasks listed in the schedule use
these materials. But we cannot have all the materials right now. It has
to depend on the consumption, and the consumption again is not fixed.
So lets say we have 100 units in the begining, but my schedule requires
1000 units. And suppose in between some tasks require more than planned
or new task is added. In that case i need to know the actual
consumption so that i know or predict when to order for new materials
or by what date the present stock will get exhausted.
I guess that clears my actual problem.

Hi SeeFar,
If the custom field is a number field, it will not accept alpha characters.
Data entered into a custom field must match the data type of the field. If
the custom field is a number field, you will need to insert a Text field,
copy and paste the values from the number field and then you should be able
to add your alpha text to the numbers.

As Jim said, repair disk permissions & you should be OK - post back with
specific details if not.

Also, you can't "use up" your Product Keys. You can reinstall using the same
key as many times as you wish. It's just that you can't get away with using
the *same* key multiple times on the same computer or multiple systems on
the same network... Only one installation based on the same key will run at
a time.

Like others, I could not get the 12.1.1 or .2 updates to install. Unlike others having problems here, the problems I had were all related to permissions. I could not install the 12.1.1 or 12.1.2 updates until I
-repaired permissions
-rebooted
-ran the 12.1.1 update
-repaired permissions
-rebooted
-ran the 12.1.2 update
-to be safe I repaired permissions and rebooted again (this is definitely a Mac Microsoft product)

A look at the Console Install logs indicated that they were indeed looking for the languages during the install, but the permissions were preventing the operation from happening. I may have overdone it on repairing permissions, but it got the job done.

I include my experience here just in case someone had a similar issue. I will also mention that I am running an MSDN copy of Office 2008 (my company is an MS partner) which was installed with NO customizations or location changes. The 12.1 update was applied without incident.

Console error - CGBitmapContextGetData: invalid context

1. File locations in preferences are all on the local HD - and none that are remote.
2. Fonts - I have no non-system or non-MS fonts installed, only the ones installed by OS X and Office. I have also cleaned out the font caches several times.
3. Startup is slow the first time, and then speeds up considerably on subsequest startups. After a reboot, the first starrt up is again slow.
4. I only consider the console error messages a problem because the programs (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) are reporting so many of the same error messages and they don't stop. My assumption is that if error messages are being reported in this volume, then something is wrong and the programs are encountering problems they find necessary to report. I don't think it too much to ask a user who pays a lot for these programs to have ones that do not report so many errors. Also, I have no idea why it they are reporting these messages, whether it is benign, causes inefficiency or real problems - this is entirely out of my depth as just a fairly educated user.

1.2 is not compatible with Crystal 10 and there are no
details on when it will be in the future. Microsoft CRM

CRM Exchange Router

Hi Eric

I'm deducing that as the email gets sent fine via standard outlook that it
is indeed the router at fault. The error that you describe is consistent
with either the router not being installed or the installation being
unsuccessful, both scenarios that I have come across before.

I'm afraid that the only other thing to check is that if you have more than
one exchange box that the router is on the correct one, i.e. the one that
the MSCRM users receive & send their mail on.

If you have checked the reg keys & tried a re-install I don't think that I
can offer you any more possible solutions - Sorry. Please post if you do
find an answer so we all know the solution.

Usually they are the same thing, if your mahince name is CRM1, your URL will be CRM1 as well (or if you need to use fully qualified name CRM1.company.com as noted below).

The reason why it is asking twice is just in case you have a machine (CRM1) that has mutiple websites, or mutiple network cards with multiple IP address, so it can find the website. (when using machine name to locate a website, it will alwsy display either the default website, or the default IP address that is bound to that website)

Problem with Word Form-filling

I have created a form that users can complete and print. It works okay but seems to have some sort of glitch.

 

Most of the fields are 'plain text content control', some are legacy text form fields and there are a few check boxes. When the form is first opened, it is not possible to input text to the 'plain text content control' fields - only the legacy text form fields. Once something has been typed into one of the legacy fields, it becomes possible to type into the plain text content controls.

 

However, if you select one of the check boxes then it reverts and it will again be impossible to type into the plain text content controls until something is typed into one of the legacy fields.

 

It's wierd and very frustrating (having taken a long time to create the form). It's only a problem when the form is protected and restricted to only filling in the form. I can leave it unprotected but, owing to the nature of the document (and multiple potential users), it would be much more useful if the form worked with the protection in place.

 

Any ideas?

restore left-justifed command

While demonstrating macros to someone in MSW 2003, I inadvertently altered the fundamental Ctrl-L keyboard command for left justification. Making a new macro to restore it the usual way with the Format > Paragraph window won't do because that carries with it a bunch of instructions for Indentation and Spacing that might not apply to text that I want to simply left-justify. Please help me restore this basic keyboard command.

Hi all,

When I erase/reject a comment in TC, the document reverts automatically to All Markup though I work exclusively in Simple Markup. Not a big deal except that it takes a few moments for it to load with large documents, and sometimes the page comes up with a different paragraph in the window. It's annoying to wait and then click back to Simple Markup. Are there any preferences I can change to prevent this from happening? Also, with those same large documents (about 200-300 pages), saving can start to take way too long. The auto-save interrupts my work and makes it impossible to continue while it saves, which can take 5 or more seconds.

This is a screen capture of me trying to use my newly purchased Microsoft Office Word 2013. The video shows that when trying to create a blank document, open another document, change my settings, or just about anything else; it crashes. The video also shows that other elements of office such as one-note or PowerPoint function as needed and that it is only Word that has this issue.
I am running 64 bit Windows 7 SP1 on my ASUS K52F.

My specs are:
  • Intel Core i5 @ 2.67 MHz
  • 4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 532MHz
  • Generic PnP Monitor (1366x768@60Hz)
  • Intel HD Graphics
  • 466GB Seagate ST9500325AS ATA Device (SATA)

Office Word 2013 glitches

Using Word, some features I have problems using because the application glitches out. For example I cannot drag a tab across the top without it glitching and undoing my tab position. Or trying to switch between Home - Insert - anything else, the application seems to "stop working." then it switches over. My Word application just seems glitchy, doesn't seem... seamless. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Microsoft Office Professional Word 2003 worked fine for years and once it got corrupted and I uninstalled it and reloaded the discs. All was fine till it happened again, but, the discs are forever lost. Now program ALWAYS asks for permission, then I have to find an old doc and double click to open. Very tired of drilling down versus simple double click on doc. Any ideas? TX.

  I am trying to use the whole document translator feature of Word 2010.  I click on the "Translate" button in the review pane, and select the "translate document" option.  The dialog pops up, I click "send"...then nothing ever happens.  I tried manually typing the URL given for the Microsoft Translator service, and the webpage doesn't seem to exist. http://www.microsofttranslator.com/officetrans/httpquery.aspx

The issue is not document size, this happens with any size.  I repaired the program and rebooted the computer -- still nothing.  This is a brand new installation of Office 2010.

Any help?

Word copies defaulting to multiple copies...how can I change?

A couple of weeks ago I printed 8 copies of a document. Word has now defaulted to print 8 copies. I can change to a different number of copies and the new number of copies will print, but it defaults back to 8 again. This only happens in Word not Excel or anything else I might print. Does anyone know how to default copies back to 1 copy. Thanks for the any help available.

Navigation Pane Incorrect Display (Word 2013)

Actually, "incorrect" isn't necessarily the right word. For some reason, the results are displayed in a truncated fashion. There seems to be no reason for this. I haven't changed any settings, and I can't find any way to adjust this. Any ideas? I'd greatly appreciate it!

 

how do I stop files from converting to read only

I can no longer go into properties, click off the read only box, click apply and have office reset all the documents in the folder or even a single document back to the original read-write properties.  Searching on the net for directions to this solution and applying them: doesn't work anymore either. 
   What needs to be done to fix this problem for good?

word 2013 PROBLEM - got essay to finish

Hihi,
I have an essay I gotta finish before the end of this weekend so all valuable answers would be appreciated.

So the problem:
I was working with word 2013 and everything was going smoothly. Than all of a sudden I click something by accident when I was putting a picture into the essay and now I can not edit my text. Every time I try to click into the text the editing field moves to the top of the first page. 
I am also not able to use any of the tabs - like bold, underline, insert functions and just all of it!

Hope somebody can help me.. Thanks!

hda2 being swap). This, as I understand, is to avoid win2k overwriting

Yes, it did a little. Now the crunches seem shorter and less displeasing
to the ear. However, the activity still persists.

I wrote a little script in Perl that utilizes the output from iostat and
alerts whenever a read or write operation is performed by playing a
sound and printing the number of seconds passed from last activity. Here
are the results I obtained (noatime turned on):

I found the error to this irritating problem. I fucked up a bit....
I use dns2go and I have always started dns2go in /etc/rc.local with the
commandline :
/usr/local/bin/dns2go

It worked fine under RH9.0, it forked or something....

I upgraded to a new version of dns2go at the same time I upgraded from
RH9.0 > Lineox 3EL and I thought that I could start it in the same
way...Now I know....

Now I start dns2go like this :

/usr/local/bin/dns2go & and I have a login prompt and am happy :-)

If your work community would be satisfied with Gantt Bars in the RAG status
see:

www.mvps.org/project FAQ #31 for some ideas about customizing Gantt bars
based upon the flag fields.

If you would like to see Graphic indicators for RAG status as part of a
table see Mike Glen's article at:

http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=403

His example uses graphic indicators for cost but you can modify the custom
field to show variance for the Start or Finish fields.

Seconding Jack's comments. The only thing leveling does is shift work to
resolve overallocations. It never, ever, tries to use resources to their
fullest extent; the only thing is does is resolve situations where you have
overbooked the resource to do more than they are capable of. If I have Joe
booked for 8 hours on Task A Monday and also for 8 hours on Task B, he's
expected to do 16 hours of work in an 8 hour day and that's impossible.
Leveling will move one of those tasks to Tuesday, assuming the resource is
free. Why doesn't it increase or decrease allocations? Because it doesn't
know why you've booked him at less than the max and doesn't know anything
about the priorities of the business or the project. Maybe there's a very
good reason, like work to be done outside the micro-unicverse of the
project, that means on THAT day he's only available a couple of hours for
project related work. You, the PM, know that when you assign him only 25%
on task X Tuesday even though his overall maximum availability is usually
100%. But Project can't know anything about what else might be going on
with the resource and so it respects your management decision.

MS Project is a glorified calculator, not a manager <grin>.

The "synching up" messages you receive are normal in an environment using
managed time periods. What this means is that the information in the
project plan must be synchronized with the information in PWA. This also
means that you cannot enter Actual Work manually in the Microsoft Project
plan, and that all Actual Work must be submitted by team members using their
PWA timesheet. This is one of the limitations of using managed time
periods, one that frustrates many good people (such as yourself).

Beyond this, I would recommend that you get a book specifically on Project
Server 2003. Click the URL in my signature block for information about

I tend to think of the task type setting and the effort driven setting as
switches the PM uses to supply the intellegence about what should happen
when a task is edited that Project itself lacks. If I have one guy assigned
to paint a room and add a second guy, the duration should get shorter since
the work is divided between them - effort driven. If I have a meeting and
am adding attendees, the meeting length won't change depending on the number
of people, it certainly won't get shorter at any rate!, so it's non-effort
driven.

Task type - I'm changing Joe from 100% to 50% on a 5 day task he's been
assigned to. Why? Is it because I need him elsewhere 4 hours a day and can
live with the first task taking longer? Fixed work. Or is it because it's
really only 20 man-hours instead of 40 but I don't need it done earlier than
originally planned - fixed duration. In each case, only you know what the
outcome SHOULD be, Project doesn't and can't know. The task type and effort
driven setting let you make sure it does the calculations the way they're
supposed to be.
