My thoughts are: You have a 'computer' and you are using it on 'The
Internet'.

There is no such thing as a computer that is totally proof against hacking.
The "problem" is not Microsoft. The problem is "people". Microsoft builds
software down to a price: and so does Apple and everyone else. That's how
they are selling more of it than they were...

It is probably easier to break into an Apple OS X computer than it is to
break into a Windows Vista computer. Nobody knows for sure: each of them
contains millions of lines of computer code -- all written "at the lowest
possible cost" or by "the cheapest outside contractor".

It is true that various people have made a science of cracking Windows
computers for the past 30 years. Historically, they have not bothered
hacking Macs because there were not enough of them to be profitable. Macs
used to be maybe one or two per cent of the computers in use. That is now
climbing rapidly towards ten per cent.

However, since the fall of the Soviet Union, large organisations with
headquarters in St Petersburg, Russia and thought to have links to the
Russian Mafia are involved in the game. They are hiring professional
programmers, some of the smartest people on earth -- they once worked for
the KGB, but now are unemployed, and they need to feed their families. The
exploits that are being used today are much more threatening than in the
past.

These people are making money, not mischief. These people have all the
resources of organised crime and terrorist organisations behind them. At
what point do you suppose the bad guys will figure it is worth their while
to make exploits to crack Macs? Ten per cent? Twelve? Fifteen? That's a
guess, right?

There is a reason why the CIA spends millions on its computers and we spend
only a couple of thousand. What do you suppose the CIA is buying for its
money? I suggest it's not the colour scheme they are interested in :-)

Let's consider the Mac user base: more likely to have high income than PC
users. More likely to be less interested in computers and how they work,
and thus have little idea how to secure them. More likely to be able to
afford broadband internet. More likely to invest large amounts of money.
Do you see anything there that might be interesting to large and determined
criminal organisations? Remember: We're not trying to defend ourselves
against pimply youths who are bored and having fun. We are being attacked
by large and powerful criminal conspiracies and malevolent nation-states:
entities that have money, highly-skilled computer scientists, and great
determination.

On this Mac, I run a hardware firewall, a software firewall, an antivirus
solution (two of them: one for Windows, one for Mac), an anti-spyware
solution, and an anti-spam solution. All-up cost? Maybe 200 bucks. Worth
it, to me -- so I sleep soundly at night :-)

When I grew up on farm, my stepfather taught me "Good fences make good
neighbours". I do what I can to make sure that my machine will not be
compromised, and therefore, will not be a threat to yours.

Hope this helps

Look on the Microsoft Mactopia web page: that's the only reliable source of
that piece of information. If anyone tells you anything different than you
read on that he webpage, they're making up stories :-)

Unlike many large company websites, that one updates very frequently: any
new announcement will appear there before it appears anywhere else -- that's
where we get the information from!

The one you will usually notice most often is "Full Unicode Support".
Office 2004 supports a far wider range of characters in each font than
Office X. This is not a big issue if you do not send documents out from

Hi Dan:

The product you seek is named "Windows" :-)

Seriously, as Bob says, Windows will run just fine on your MacBook (I am
running Vista on this MacBook, but I suggest you buy something cheaper:
Windows 2000 was a very good year, and it should be available very
cheaply...)

When you get it, drop it into BootCamp. If you use it more often than
occasionally, Consider installing Parallels so you can run it as a guest in
Mac OS X. That's what I am doing, but you do have to pay for Parallels,
BootCamp is free :-)

It is important to install Bootcamp even if you are going to use Windows
with Parallels. It contains Windows drivers for the various bits of Apple
hardware your MacBook contains.

For your purposes, I would immediately update Windows to IE7. Not only is
it a much better browser than IE6, it is more capable of displaying picky
websites also.

I would *not* be tempted to put Safari for Windows into it, not until they
get the bugs out of it, or you may find various bits of Windows stop working
:-)

Cheers

Office not working

Posted: 12 Jun 2007 09:30 PM PDT

Hi Jill:

Sadly, that's a well-known side-effect of one of the nasty little utilities
out there that offers to "save disk space on your Mac". It appears that the
designer of said utility does not really understand modern software :-)

As to your husband, well, that's what login passwords are for. :-)

You tell him that you were reading up on "Security" on the Internet and
<insert name of favourite expert> recommended strongly that you put a
password on your computer, to prevent hackers getting in.

What you would be saying is, in fact, true :-) If you put a password on the
machine, he will have to ASK you for it each time he wants to fiddle. You
can then ask him what he's going to do and how it will help YOU :-)

If you don't understand the answer, tell him to try it on his machine, and
let you know how well it works in six months and you will "consider" it :-)

What's to prevent you using the startup disk from your husband's machine?
So long as you have the correct licence key (the one for YOUR machine...) it
should work fine... Actually, I don't think you even need a licence key for
an Apple startup disk, do you?

Cheers

Office 2008 + SharePoint

Posted: 12 Jun 2007 08:00 PM PDT

Hi Chris:

Those who know are not allowed to tell us. Those who tell us, don't know!

That said, my guess is that Mac Office 2008 users will need to use
SharePoint via a browser only. I doubt if there will be any integration at
all: they will need to check things out in the browser, work on them, then
upload and check them back in using the browser again.

I hope I am wrong...

Default Multiple Line Spacing setting and At setting, Word 2013

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 10:37 AM PST

I'm trying to change my line spacing back to Word 2013 defaults and had taken a screen shot of the original settings. Under the Paragraph Indents and Spacing Tab, Spacing, Line spacing was set to Multiple and At was set to 1.08, In Word 2010, it used to be Multiple at 1.15. Did they change it?  Bottom line, if anyone has installed Word 2013 and not changed default settings here, I would like to know what you have in the Line Spacing and At boxes on the Indents and Spacing tab. Thanks in advance.

Also, if you go to the Design tab, Document Formatting, Paragraph Spacing, and point to Default, a screen tip appears telling you Default Line Spacing is 1.08. This article http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/change-the-default-line-spacing-HA102809684.aspx says, "he default line spacing in Microsoft Word 2013 is 1.15. " but how can that be true? Even their own screen shot in their step 3 shows "At" set to 1.08.

Iterate Sequentially through the Content Controls Collection

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 10:09 AM PST

Obtaining details from a collection of content controls is fairly straight forward:

Dim cc as ContentControl
Dim docCCs as ContentControls
Dim arrData() as String
Dim i as Integer
Dim myRange as Range
Set docCCs = ActiveDocument.SelectContentControlsByTage("summary")
x = docCCs. Count
For Each cc in docCCs
i = i + 1
Set myRange = cc.Range
arrData(i,2) = myRange.Text
Next

When you run this code, all of the Content Controls with a tag of "summary" are returned to the collection.  Then, for each of these returned controls, the text that they hold is passed to an array.  So far so good...but here is also where my problem arises.

There is a property of a content control called ID that sets the sort order for the returned controls.  Because of this the values in the array are not in the sequential order presented in the document, they are in ID order.  The system generates the ID and it cannot be manipulated.

Is there another method for iterating through a subsets of Content Controls, as bove, that will produce values in the sequential order presented in the document?

Thanks in advance,
Ron

For example, if I've created a drawing using AutoShapes and made these shapes into text boxes, can I format them so that once I make the box smaller or larger, the font becomes smaller or larger?

I suppose it would be like locking an aspect ratio, though it would be the ratio of text to box.

I know there's the option of "Resize AutoShape to fit text," but I'm really looking for the opposite effect.

Thanks

Word 2010 - Page Number Start at does not start at 1

Clicking in  a section section( Section 2) and the Insert/Page Number/ Format Pages:

For a new section - 2 the page number wants to start at 2.  I can change the number to zero and it will start at zero.  When I change it to 1 it wants to start at 2.  I can change it to 2 and it will start at 2.  I want it to start this new section at 1.

The Continue from Previous section is unchecked.

What am I missing here?  Thank you.

Word 2003 is no longer using templates when I start a new document

Posted: 17 Feb 2013 05:22 PM PST

For the past few weeks I have noticed that when I start a new document in Word 2003, all I get is a blank page within Word. There is no formatting and if I try to use one of my previously created templates, I still get a blank sheet.

If I open a previously saved Word document all appears to be fine.

Can anyone help please?

Finish & Merge Word 2007 filter issue

Posted: 16 Feb 2013 05:50 AM PST

When I try to Finish & Merge Word 2007 will not hang on to the filter I created in Edit Recipient List instead it returns all records.  How can I over come this?  The filter applies to 2 separate fields 'equal to' and 'is blank'.  I have not had this problem before but only normally filter on one field containing one condition.

Can shortcuts be assigned to dropdown values in Word forms?

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 01:48 PM PST

I've created a form in Word 2003 that has 3 options (Yes, No, N/A) and I'm wanting to find a way to allow people to reach the field by tabbing through the form, and just press Y or N to select an option from the dropdown.  Obviously N will need to be pressed twice to toggle from No to N/A but this is fine; the main ideal is to prevent the mouse from being required.

I know of the Alt + Down arrow shortcut, as well as pressing F4 on the keyboard, but I'm hoping for something a little more user friendly.  Surely there's got to be a way to make the dropdown work like every other dropdown online where you just press the first letter and it jumps to an option that matches.

Thanks in advance,

I have Microsoft Word 2003 and just recently am experiencing trouble with it.   It only prints 5-6 lines of the document and then starts a new page and prints another 5-6 lines.  If it is in Landscape then it will print half the document and the next half on a new page.   Suggestions?  Something in the settings?

Does admin take up 1 license

Posted: 24 Feb 2004 09:17 AM PST

Yes, it does make it difficult to test! That kind of stuff always seems to
slip by MS though!

If you have a Professional CRM license, then you would have gotten an extra
license for the Integration (which you could assign to the admin account).

No problem. You're not the first to ask for this particular migration
assistance. Hopefully it will be something they provide in the not to
distant future.

Is it possible to duplicate an opportunity?

Posted: 24 Feb 2004 06:47 AM PST

Hi Mehek, the easiest way to do this is to not do it.

What I'd suggest instead is that you have your page create a new opportunity
(using the SDK), and then have your page instantly redirect to the
opportunity form, passing the GUID of the new opportunity you created as an
"oId" querystring parameter. The user can then edit this new opportunity in
the standard opportunity window.

Look up url addressable forms in the SDK for help on redirecting to the
opportunity page.

ISV.config parameter

Posted: 24 Feb 2004 03:42 AM PST

Daniel

I dont know if you actually not how to get the data to your app but the idea
is you use the ISV.config to tell CRM to passparams to your app so you can
work out the calling account or CRM object. to get the id of the object that
made the call use this line

string id=Request.Params["oId"];

so stirng id will contain the objectid or guid of the calling object ie the
crm form you launched your code from.

As the other guys say you need to use the guid and let the other app query
CRM to extract the account number.

Not sure if it's supported or not, but when you delete a record, all
it does is set this field to 2. As you know Gary, a lot of what you
need to do with this product is not "supported", but I should have put
that disclaimer on the post.

Error - The specified Microsoft CRM server is not responding

Posted: 23 Feb 2004 03:49 PM PST

Michael,

Thanks for the help. Here are the results. I kept the same numbers are your
original post....

2) Typing http://crm/mscrmservices/bizusersdl.srf in Internet Explorer
produces an XML page.

4) IIS-> Microsoft CRM -> MSCRMServices-> Properties--> Virtual Directory
tab ->Configuration->AppMapping has both
".soap" and ".srf" listed.

6) Dragged and dropped c:\Program Files\Microsoft
CRM\Server\Bin\Crmisapi.dll to WINNT\System32\Regsvr32.exe to re-register
the dll file.

7) The IIS Admin Service is running under the LocalSystem Account.

Unfortunately, nothing has changed, and we still get the same "The specified
Microsoft CRM server is not responding......" popup error.

Any other ideas?

Lloyd
