3Com 56k PCard modem (3056)

Posted: 09 Feb 2004 09:41 AM PST

["Followup-To:" header set to comp.os.linux.portable.]

(That means that you should look for this post in comp.os.linux.portable
and continue the thread there. A number of PCMCIA gurus hang out there,
so your question is more likely to get answered there.)

On 9 Feb 2004 09:41:30 -0800, David Jackson staggered into the Black Sun
and said:

The card may well be a LoseModem; there's not enough information in your
post to tell. Check http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html for
general advice on asking good questions on Usenet.

It's not necessary to end every sentence with a question mark? Anyway:
yenta_socket is the module that drives the PCMCIA card socket in your
laptop; you need that module loaded in order to do anything with any
PCMCIA cards. PCMCIA cards also have other card-specific modules that
are needed; my old NE2000-compatible card used pcnet_cs, and my
CompactFlash and SmartMedia PCMCIA adapters use ide_cs.

The best way to find out if your card is supported by anything or not is
to plug the card in, do "cardctl ident", and post the output from that
command in a followup to this message. The exact model# of the card may
also help. Or you can look up your modem in the LoseModem Database at
http://freewebhosting.hostdepartment.com/g/gromitkc/winmodem.html , if
it's there and marked as "WM", it won't work. HTH,

can ping IP but not the name

Posted: 08 Feb 2004 08:09 PM PST

Thanks all for ur suggestions:

This is what I did:

Linux:
/etc/hosts
Added all the machines on my n/w

XP:
Added all the machines on my n/w
Disabled the Personal Firewall

Now I can ping using IP or hostnames between Windows and Linux.

NOW: Can u help to move to bind or DNS as someone suggested - as I dont want
to keep updating my setup as and when I add any new machine. That will help
a lot.

Correct modeline for 1920x1200 screen?

"Jim Kroger" <com> schrieb

Since you post also to alt.os.linux.suse, I assume you use SuSE.
Using sax (or was it sax2?), I chose LCD screen, then it offered me
various resolutions. For my (now oldish) Inspiron 7500 I chose
1400x1050. Works fine ever since. There was no need to fiddle with
modelines, a concept I never quite gathered.

PS: If everything else fails, I'd recommend you to try using
Knoppix and its built-in excellent hw detection & configuration.
Just copy the Knoppix-XF86Config file to your existing setup.
That's the way I would go now if I couldn't do with the built-in
tools.

software to improve quality of mp3s

GVK wrote:

You're not likely to see much improvement. By bad quality, do you mean poor
sound due to bad encoding or too low a bit rate, or hisses /pops etc?

You may have more luck with removal of hisses / pops etc, but if it's just
because the file has been compressed too far, I don't think you'll see much
improvement, after all the problem is that MP3 is a lossy format, and lost
audio information is gone for good.

I've heard good things about GWC (Gnome Wave Cleaner, see:
http://gwc.sourceforge.net/ ) - give that a try and see what it can do.

Good luck!

You'll be saying you don't know how to get back with ALT F7 next.

Then you'll be claiming you don't EVEN know how to start extra X sessions on
F8, F9, F10 etc and switch between them.

You would be best off with 1 power supply for each motherboard. Then each
space between motherboards is cooled by one power supply's fan.

The other issue is how to install hard disks. They shouldnt sit on the
motherboard, so you need to fabricate brackets for them.
